Development of an automatic cleaning system for photovoltaic plants
This paper aims at developing a low-cost automation system to maintain the efficiency of solar panels connected in an array by providing an on demand cleaning. Wireless Sensor networks has been implemented to collect the data from individual panels. Monitoring data and information trends then will be used to trigger a robotic system to clean the surface of unclean panels

Compassion in Healthcare – National Tertiary Learning and Teaching Conference 2015 Title: A measure of compassion in health care students Authors: Margaret Vick, Gudrun Dannenfeldt and Bill Shaw Institution: Wintec, Hamilton, New Zealand
It appears with the increasing expansion of the role of the health care workers as well as advances in technology, health care may have lost some of its previous emphasis on compassion. The importance of compassion as a core attribute of health care has been highlighted by a recent worldwide movement (political and professional). However, in New Zealand, the word ‘compassion’ is rarely mentioned in major policy documents or professional competency guidelines.
Compassion is often compared to empathy, altruism, mindfulness and sympathy. Compassion, however, also involves sensitivity to self and others, as well as motivation to action with a goal. There are theoretical approaches to compassion, there is a neurobiological basis, but to measure compassion and its impact in the context of health care is difficult. Components of compassion include instrumental (psychomotor skills, behaviour and knowledge, cognitive) and expressive (affective, emotional, motivational and interpersonal) aspects.
The purpose of the study is to measure the perception of compassion amongst students in a variety of health care degree programmes. Quantitative data will be collected using a ‘Compassion for Others Scale’ administered to three different cohorts of students in two health care degree programmes (nursing and social work). We will present preliminary findings from our research that shows the compassion perceived by the students at different levels of their education. This will allow comparison between different cohorts of students and could lead to the expansion of the project into a longitudinal study. This presentation will be of interest to others teaching health-related programmes
Working with SAM (Student Allocation Management) ANEC presentation
Managing student practicum requirements is always a challenge for tertiary institutions and service providers. Getting it right so that students have a well-supported learning experience but numbers don’t overwhelm the practice partners requires skilled negotiation at all levels. In 2013, Wintec had 2370 placements to arrange amongst 139 clinical providers for 795 nursing students and the equivalent of 2 full time equivalent staff members to make it happen. The placements were geographically spread across the greater Waikato region from Coromandel to Taumarunui and were with a mix of Waikato DHB and private providers. Students were allocated placements by staff with little choice. There were acres of spreadsheets, students were often disgruntled, allocations needed to be at DHB 8 weeks before needed, it was time consuming.
Automating the clinical placement process had been on discussed previously after much discussion the Student Allocator module (SAM) developed by Scientia was chosen by Wintec to integrate with plans for software and timetabling management.
Since late 2013 bachelor of nursing students at Wintec have selected their clinical placements using student allocator, out talk will cover the process to implement the project and the strengthening relationships between Wintec and Waikato DHB to continue management and development of SAM to support student learning experience in clinical placement
