Resistance training and co-supplementation with creatine and protein in older subjects with frailty: a small-scale exploratory study
This is a small-scale exploratory trial from the Pro-Elderly study (“Protein Intake and Resistance Training in Aging”) aimed at gathering knowledge on the feasibility, efficacy and safety of co-supplementation with creatine and protein supplementation, in conjunction with resistance training, in older individuals with frailty. Methods: A 14-week, double-blind, randomized, parallel-group, placebo controlled exploratory trial was conducted between in Hamilton (New Zealand). The subjects were randomly assigned to compose either one of the following groups: 1) whey protein and creatine co-supplementation (WHEY+CR) or 2) whey protein supplementation (WHEY). All the subjects undertook a supervised exercise training program for 14 weeks and were assessed at baseline and after 14 weeks. The main dependent variables were muscle function (handgrip, timed-stands and timed-up-and go tests) and body composition (free fat mass, fat mass, and bone mass). Self-reported adverse events were recorded throughout the trial and blood parameters were assessed. Results: We found a main time-effect in handgrip (WHEY+CR = 26.65 ± 31.29; WHEY = 13.84 ± 14.93 Kg; p = 0.0005), timed-up-and-go (WHEY+CR = 11.20 ± 9.37; WHEY = -17.76 ± 21.74; p = 0.006 s), and timed-stands-test (WHEY+CR = 47.50 ± 35.54; WHEY = 46.87 ± 24.23 reps; p = 0.0001), suggesting that WHEY+CR and WHEY were similarly effective in improving muscle function. Exploratory analyses further suggested that most of the subjects experienced improvements in all muscle function tests. In addition, all of the subjects showed improvements in at least two of the three tests, regardless of their treatments. Neither within- nor between-group differences were detected in any of the body composition variables (all p > 0.05). No important adverse effect was observed and blood parameters remained unaltered. Conclusion: Co-supplementation with creatine and whey protein was tolerable and free of adverse events in older subjects with frailty undertaking resistance training. Furthermore creatine supplementation did not augment the adaptive effects of resistance training along with whey protein on body composition or muscle function in this population. Multi-disciplinary teams at Waikato Hospital - View from Social Workers
This power point presented at the 2015 Australia and NZ Social Work Educators Symposium at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia on 4th September, describes a 2014 study where social work from multi-disciplinary teams (MDTs) at Waikato Hospital are interviewed regarding teams’ functioning. Group and systems discipline knowledge and practice experience means there is expert knowledge to contribute. Processes that contribute to or hinder teams’ functioning and recommendations for improvement aimed at increasing quality of patient outcomes are provided.
The research examines discourses in medical settings highlighting their impact on MDT functioning. The higher value placed on medical knowledge can render non-medical knowledge invisible or dismissed. When facilitation of MDT meetings is automatically assumed by lead nursing or medical personnel an unspoken undervaluing of facilitation expertise is promoted and an opportunity for more effective team functioning is lost.
The medical `site of disease’ discourse promotes a narrowed focus limiting options for MDT work. Risk aversion is a highly significant focus of work in hospitals and defensive practice can result distracting from holistic patient-centred practice.
Social workers can play a unique role in teams assisting functioning and promoting the patient’s voice. However they can experience significant downgrading of their knowledge and expertise, so need to maintain critical understanding of their position and be active in maintaining competent ethical professional practice
Reflective practice in vocational education: Two case studies compared
This presentation outlines how Personal Construct Theory (PCT) methods can be applied in developing a meta-perspective on educator and learner meaning-making in two vocational education contexts, hairdressing and electrical engineering. The research teams selected constructs elicitation and repertory grid technique as data-collection tools (Fransella, Bell and Bannister, 2004) in generating their reflective accounts of their practices. Broadly replicating the same PCT methodology, the author used the two case studies as elements in eliciting meta-level constructs for use in a repertory grid. Descriptive statistics (means and standard deviations), correlations and cluster analyses (dendrograms) were computed and then used as prompts in generating a meta-perspective which was intended to subsume the reflective accounts in the two case studies. As in the latter studies, it is shown how meta-level constructs were related in the author’s meaning-making. We concluded that PCT methods could be used to develop meta-perspectives on vocational educators’ pedagogical meaning-making
Targeted images of KB cells using folate-conjugated gold nanoparticles
Mercaptosuccinic acid-coated gold (GM) nanoparticles were prepared and characterized by transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering. Folic acid (F) was then conjugated to the GM to preferentially target oral squamous cancer (KB) cells with folate receptors expressed on their membranes and facilitate the transit of the nanoparticles across the cell membrane. Finally, a fluorescence dye (Atto) was conjugated to the nanoparticles to visualize their internalization into KB cells. After culture of the cells in a medium containing GM and folate-conjugated GM (GF), the interaction of surface-modified gold nanoparticles with KB cells was studied
On Oxygen Activation at Rutile- and Anatase-TiO2
The rutile form of titanium dioxide (r-TiO2) usually shows a photocatalytic activity lower than that of anatase-TiO2 (a-TiO2). Nevertheless, there are numerous examples of sometimes unexpectedly high activity of r-TiO2. This material may appear to be particularly useful when a noncomplete and selective photocatalytic oxidation of organic substrates is required. On the basis of literature examples and our own studies, we compare the photocatalytic activities of r-TiO2, a-TiO2, and r-TiO2/a-TiO2 composites. Because of a significantly better oxygen adsorption at the surface of r-TiO2 and a lower redox potential of the excited electron, more efficient O2•– production takes place at the surface of rutile. As a consequence, generation of 1O2 (involving O2 reduction and the subsequent oxidation of superoxide) and reduction of H2O2 to OH– and HO• are also favored with this material. Therefore, r-TiO2 can be considered to be a particularly good photocatalyst for activation of molecular oxygen. On the other hand, a-TiO2 appears to be a stronger oxidant. In its presence, efficient HO• generation (the result of water or surface hydroxyl group oxidation) and oxidation of H2O2 to O2•– are observed

Maimai, Lake Ngaroto, New Zealand, is an example of an on-going project into covert strategies used by hunters. The Maimai or camouflaged hunting blind is the hunter’s method of concealment during the duck-shooting season between May and August each year. Currently 30,000 New Zealanders hold game bird hunting licences. “When duck hunting there are two crucial things – stay out of sight and encourage the ducks to think that your place is safe”.
