The New Zealand Tree Project brought together Arborists, Ecologists and Photographers to work towards a common goal. The NZ Tree Project is an innovative film and photography venture that captures imagery of majestic trees and native podocarp forests from viewpoints that cannot be experienced from the forest floor. With the National Geographic redwood images as inspiration the NZTP team spent a month in Pureora Forest to capture a composite image of an entire rimu tree and film a documentary outlining the history, conservation and future of the forest. The team used innovative mediums such as time-lapse, with custom built camera rigs, drones and 50m long cable cameras to create unique images of the forest from ground breaking new angles

Minding the gap: Writing across thresholds and faultlines

    No full text
Book Description Passengers on the British railway and underground must ‘mind the gap’ because it’s dangerous not to. In a state of embarking or disembarking, passengers must stay aware of the small but significant space separating the stationary from the moving. The contemporary practices of writing and reading are in constant motion, and the phrase ‘mind the gap’ captures an essential aspect of the way language and literature progress as they pass through any number of social, technical, and political exchanges. ‘Minding the gap’ also suggests an awareness of the always shifting distance between the expected and the unexpected, the ordinary and the impossible, the familiar and unimagined. This book includes chapters on writing non–fiction, media and genre, and also addresses elements of identity, culture and linguistics in fiction, poetry and creative non-fiction as contributors consider the gaps that exist between the self as writer, as reader and as editor or mentor. The volume adopts the following key themes: • new gaps for creative writing in the academy; • writing in new genres, media and forms; • exploring the creative process and narrative strategies across disciplines. This book will be of international appeal to all readers interested in the changing landscape of creative writing

Reflecting on a vocational educator's theory of practice: A co-constructed account

    Get PDF
In this article, we report on how we used personal construct theory (PCT) methods in reflecting on the second author’s (SA’s) practices in vocational training for at-risk pre-apprenticeship youth in the electrical engineering and supply field. Our main aim is to describe the reflective process, especially how we raised SA’s awareness of his pedagogical constructs and some of the implicative dilemmas in his pedagogical meaning-making. We provide a brief outline of a constructs-based approach, and what we mean by implicative dilemmas. Our method involves a case study to show how we used two PCT methods, constructs elicitation and repertory grids, in SA’s reflective work. We found that SA was able to make explicit both his constructs and the conflicts in his meaning-making. His experiment with small-group learning and role definitions assisted him in resolving these dilemmas and diversifying his constructs. We concluded that PCT methods were useful in providing very specific prompts for reflective practice in this educational context. First author’s (FA’s) broader interest was to develop a constructs-based reflective approach for educators at a tertiary institute of technology
