The Effect of Bundled Sticks on Sound - Auckland Art Gallery Foundation Launch
Performance by Ben Hoadley. Curated by Judy Millar for Auckland Art Gallery.
A short composition for bassoon and FX pedals.
The Effect of Bundled Sticks on Sound
Programme Note:
“if something has an interesting enough sound, you don’t have to play as much on the instrument … the sound takes over… [It’s] part of the composition.” – Marcus Miller
This piece was originally written as a sonic exploration of the bassoon – but to move beyond the repertoire for acoustic solo bassoon, and to extend the sound world of the instrument by including a microphone and FX pedals. The main motif is constructed from two fragments: a rising tone, and a falling 7th then 6th . These fragments are rearranged, reversed, stretched and manipulated throughout the piece. Also, of particular interest to the listener, the influence of funk and blues music should be quite clear throughout the piece. But at its essence this piece is an exploration of sound

Rethinking relationships Part 2: A strengths-based approach to responsiveness to Māori - A workshop for Social Service workers, Managers and Board Members. Rethinking relationships: A strengths-based approach to responsiveness to Māori , Hamilton, New Zealand, November 4 2016
This is a practice-oriented workshop to assist leaders, practitioners and trainees to respond in strengths-based ways to the expectations and aspirations of Māori clients
and communities, and to work confidently in the area of responsiveness to Māori.
Responsiveness to Māori needs and aspirations, from governance through to operations, is now a requirement of government contracts and many community funders. A deeper
understanding of historical context, strategy and available practice models will assist in funding applications, strategy, service provision and evaluation of your Treaty-based practice.
Ingrid will introduce the issues with a brief refresher on Waitangi Tribunal evidence of Māori aspirations for the Treaty relationship as shown in He Wakaputanga (the
Declaration) and new evidence about Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
Rawiri will showcase his doctoral research into inter-generational impacts of colonisation, and show how trauma can be approached without activating a deficit perspective. He will cover current models which allow practitioners and clients to work respectfully together on analysis, action and aspirations. Within these frameworks, Western models such as CBT and Māori models such as Whare Tapa Wha can all be used.
The workshop will include presentations, group discussions, and the opportunity for organisational strategising. (Bring your current strategy documents and funding applications, etc, with you to look at through a different lens during discussion)
Family Violence and Child Protection- A pathway to the future. One day workshop.
Workshop includes historical and intergenerational trauma, child abuse and family violence, understanding practitioner responsibilities in relation to the Vulnerable Childrens Act 2014. Presentations of local responses and initiatives in the Waikato region
Interprofessional Health and Social Practice Symposium
Presentation from visiting research scholar, Scott Reeves, and other guest speakers from around the Waikato region on current projects that integrate interprofessional research, practice and education
Silence is Golden
An interactive walk-in dome that allowed participants to trigger Tibetan bell sounds and overhead lighting changes. This work was part of Lo-lo, a group exhibition by Media Arts researchers that showed at the Waikato Art Museum. The dome was lined with triangular mirrors which created a multiplied fractured effect, highlighting participant's sense of being in contested space
Multi-Objective Optimization for Software Testing Effort Estimation
Software Testing Effort (STE), which contributes about 25-40% of the total development effort, plays a significant role in software development. In addressing the issues faced by companies in finding relevant datasets for STE estimation modeling prior to development, cross-company modeling could be leveraged. The study aims at assessing the effectiveness of cross-company (CC) and within-company (WC) projects in STE estimation. A robust multi-objective Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) optimization framework for the selection of CC and WC projects was constructed and estimation of STE was done using Deep Neural Networks. Results from our study indicate that the application of the MILP framework yielded similar results for both WC and CC modeling. The modeling framework will serve as a foundation to assist in STE estimation prior to the development of new a software project
'Tales Of Nikolai Gogol' Orchestration
Orchestration of full score for Music Theatre work 'Tales Of Nikolai Gogol' for premier live performance at the Clarence Street Theatre, Hamilton, Sat Feb 20 2016.
The original one act version (2012 - for rhythm section and strings) was expanded to two acts which comprised 41 separate scores. I collaborated with composer David Sidwell on appropriate instrumentation to score his piano and vocal scores and the final versions were orchestrated for Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Trumpet, F Horn, Trombone, Piano and Keyboard 2, Guitar, Bass, Drums, soloists and and chorus.
I proposed the adoption of 2 'alter-ego' voices for the tormented character of artist Piskarev: solo violin depicts his romantic vision of "She" while an angst-ridden heavily distorted guitar depicts his anguish.
I was honoured to be asked to compose two pieces for the work: "Ti Sento Qui" for characters Princess Volkonskaya and Nikolai Gogol and "The Secret" sung by Pisarev's love interest "SHE".
NB. As the mp3 files are computer generated from Finale music software files the simulated vocal lines do not contain lyrics
