Providing for risky play in the outdoor environment

    Get PDF
This seminar will outline the importance of risky play in the outdoor environment for children’s developmental growth. The discussion will include information on how a range of early childhood education teachers and settings provide for risky play. The seminar is informed by research Athene undertook to write a chapter on risky play in the book Outside Voices: Conversations with early childhood educators about playing outdoors in Aotearoa New Zealand. The research explored areas of play that Ellen Beate Hansen Sandseter identified as opportunities for risky taking. To situate it in a New Zealand context Athene interviewed New Zealand early childhood education teachers about how they provided for risky play in their own settings

Imagining peace_ One hundred years of WILPF in Aotearoa new Zealand

    Get PDF
Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) has been active in Aotearoa for one hundred years, working for peace and security through challenging the causes of war and its root causes of violence, while working to dismantle the structures of gendered power – patriarchal, economic, political and military. Geographically positioned in the south west Pacific, WILPF Aotearoa has grown over the decades into a clear sense of Pacific identity and is now part of an extensive Asia/Pacific region in WILPF’s regional structure. In this reflection we look to our formative influences, examine how our organisation currently functions, locally and internationally, and consider what might serve us well for the future in Aotearoa. We draw on current International Vice-president Catia Confortini’s analysis of a feminist critical methodology and the tool of ‘feminist compassion’ in the development of WILPF as an international organisation. We acknowledge as our foremothers did that our work will always require ‘the most strenuous and adventurous effort of mind and spirit.

Comparing Fiber-Optic Distributed Temperature Sensing to Hydrochemistry for understanding groundwater inflows to streams

    Get PDF
Fiber-optic distributed temperature sensing (FODTS) is an established technique for identifying locations and quantifying fluxes of groundwater inflows into rivers and streams. FODTS has the advantage of being able to provide very high spatio-temporal res olution of groundwater inflows relative to conventional methods such as differential stream flow gauging. However, in the traditional longitudinal configuration in which the FODTS cable is deployed along the stream bed, the method may not provide detail on hyporehic exchange
