Critical conversations: Social workers' perceptions of the use of a closed Facebook group as a participatory professional space.
INTRODUCTION: The rise of social media has been associated with the rapid growth in different forms of digital networking, debate and activism. Many studies have traced the role of social media in mobilising people to take action on shared issues of concern across the world. Yet while networked public spaces offer many possibilities for engagement and interaction, the technology also shapes social dynamics raising questions about privacy, professional boundaries and the nature of online behaviour.
METHOD: The development of a closed professional group on the social networking site Facebook provided an ideal opportunity to explore the perceptions of social workers of their use of participatory public space for professional deliberation and debate about public issues. Members of the group were invited to complete an online survey; eleven social workers accepted invitations to be further interviewed and their subsequent interviews were thematically analysed.
FINDINGS: Social workers involved in the Facebook group benefitted from the resources, research and professional development opportunities afforded to them as members and supported the professional potential and promise of social networking sites. They grappled with what constitutes ethical online behaviour, or netiquette, and identified the limitations and strengths of the social networking group as a place to promote robust professional dialogue and action on social issues.
IMPLICATIONS: Analysis of social worker experience within participatory public spaces offers insight into how the profession can develop modern communication strategies and strong communities of practice in line with its professional principles and mandate
Delivering education to RNs across the Waikato – a new insight into reaching health professional communities for ongoing clinical education
Introduction
Building on the increased use of video communication technology (VCT) in health care, this paper looks at the response and efficacy of using VCT across a region to cross continuum groups of nurses.
Use of technology and/or information
The advantages of VCT for education has been recognised as a highly flexible instrument to reach students across a variety of locations, while being adaptive enough to address a wide range of learning modes. There is considerable potential for reducing equity issues by ensuring access to education, consistency of care provision, and increased knowledge and understanding between care and social support providers
Implementation/Processes
The Nursing and Midwifery Professional Development Unit (PDU) at the Waikato District Health Board (WDHB) delivered a 2-day workshop via VCT in August 2016 for registered nurses (RNs) working across the Waikato region. In collaboration with the Waikato Institute of Technology (WINTEC) nursing department the expectations from the participating nurses and their responses after the workshop were collected and evaluated.
The main broadcasting centre was established at Waikato Hospital Wairoa building, linking to five hubs in DHB facilities around the district. Each hub had a nurse educator acting as a facilitator to provide onsite guidance and to interactive group activities. Presentations and discussions were viewed and engaged with in real-time by all participating RNs.
Conclusion
The data gathered encompasses the responses from the participating RNs to the mode of delivery, the content of the workshop, and the connection with the wider nursing community in their areas. The paper presented will also show, the advantages of engaging staff from a variety of clinical settings, and from a facilitating perspective, how future planning of similar educational sessions could be moderated after this experience

The Quest is a musical written by Chris Williams of Hamilton; I was responsible for the complete song arrangements, score production, musical direction, and keyboards for the premiere season of the show, 2-9 December 2017 at the Meteor Theatre.
The show is a parody of reality TV singing shows, and features songs across a range of styles, including pop ballads, 1970s rock, country, and folk rock
IoT and Wireless Sensor Network for Interactive Waka Structure
Partnership between technologists, engineers and artists often produces new forms of interactive and complex artworks. This paper discusses the role of a smart interactive art structure and reviews the novel ways in which it can serve the intended purpose. The interactive waka project is a multi-disciplinary project which involves in the production of an interactive six-meter-tall COR-TEN plate steel waka (traditional canoe) sculpture informed by Mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge) about the Matariki star cluster. (Pleiades). This smart interactive structure will be will be located besides the Waikato river in Hamilton, New Zealand. The waka sculpture as a smart structure serves several main interrelating purposes that are centred on its symbolic, architectonic, and interactive functions. The use of human and environmental monitoring will enable co-constitutive real-time interactions, which will themselves be performatively incorporated into the field of relations. All the information gathered from the wireless sensors will be sent to the cloud, where it will be processed to determine how the waka structure's light and sound patterns should behave. The waka structure will be self-contained in terms of power, using sustainable energy sources such as solar, and will not be active unless humans are present. Data collected through the environmental wireless sensors network will be publically available through a website, using an open-source platform and the smart interactive structure will be gifted to the City of Hamilton in New Zealand
Matariki Interactive Waka Project Event 20th July 2017
This event presented the waka prototype to invited guests and the general public for the first time. It provided an
opportunity to learn more about the people behind the project, view preliminary plans and drawings, and to learn about the creative journey to date.
A partnership project with Wintec's Māori achievement, this event was held in the social space of the Engineering building at Wintec's Rotokauri campus. Students and staff from across Engineering, Trades, Early Childhood Education, Media Arts and the Centre for Business Information Technology and Enterprise who have been involved, were given an opportunity to show their work.
The interactive waka sculpture is set to grace Hamilton’s Ferrybank Reserve on the Waikato River for the 2018 Matariki celebrations led by Wintec and key partners Hamilton City Council and Longveld Limited. The steel structure will reach nearly seven metres in height, and along with motion sensors and surround sound will depict key elements of Matariki for visitors to interact with

A live audio-visual experience.
'Glimpse' is a new multi-media artwork incorporating live music, projected video, and soundscape created by filmmaker Dan Inglis and composer Dr. Jeremy Mayall. This innovative new piece combining experimental film concepts and contemporary art music blurs the line between conventional cinema and pure concert music.
The work is a suite of 29 individual but intertwined audio-visual vignettes. Film footage appropriated from The British Council (British Council New Zealand) Film Collection of short documentaries is reedited, reimagined, and recontextualised by Inglis and paired with original piano preludes and soundscapes by Mayall creating a wholly new performance work where the music informs the image, and the image informs the music.

The School of Media Arts, Wintec is proud to present “PIANO & EGGS” - a series of breakfast concerts to be held on the second Monday of every month from 7am-8am. The concerts will take place between the Creative Waikato space and Miltons Canteen on Alexandra Street in Hamilton.
Following on from the success of the 2016 experiment with 'Piano & Eggs' with a month of concerts in August, we are now planning to spread the joy across the year and have one concert each month! Starting on April 10th.
We all know that concerts are typically reserved for evenings towards the end of the week, providing a closing reward to the pressures of working life. But it really feels great when there is a way to kick off your week with an early Monday morning reward and enjoy your morning coffee and breakfast accompanied by some live music! An investigation and comparison of speech recognition software for determining if bird song recordings contain legible human voices
The purpose of this work was to test the effectiveness of using readily available speech recognition API services to determine if recordings of bird song had inadvertently recorded human voices. A mobile phone was used to record a human speaking at increasing distances from the phone in an outside setting with bird song occurring in the background. One of the services was trained with sample recordings nd each service was compared for their ability to return recognized words. The services from Google and IBM performed similarly and the Microsoft service, that allowed training, performed slightly better. However, all three services failed to perform at a level that would enable recordings with recognizable human speech to be deleted in order to maintain full privacy protection
