    Art and la revolución Mexicana

    Get PDF
The development of Mexican art and culture from the beginning of the last century was intertwined with the violent struggle of the Mexican Revolution ending the long dictatorship of Porfirio Díaz, that lasted from 1884 until 1911. Francisco Madero was elected President in 1911. In 1913 he was assassinated /overthrown by Victoriano Huerta who became president from 1913 until 1914. Venustiano Carranza took power in 1915 and in 1917 the Mexican Constitution was created (the country’s ruling document to this day). This was the first such document in the world to set out social rights, serving as a model for the Russian Constitution of 1918 and the Weimar Constitution of 1919. A new vision for art and culture was born, away from the European trends and fads that had been prevalent since the Spanish Conquest. This renaissance arose out of the interaction between art and politics

Embedding ways to enhance employability skills in teaching practice

    Get PDF
This interative workshop will explore an Ako Aotearoa Regional Hub funded collaborative research project undertaken by a dozen educational developers from eight Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs). The project team sought to identify where and how teachers embed ways of enchancing their learners' skills for employability, lefe-long learning and contributing to society. The research describes a number of case studies arising from classroom observations and interviews of a range of effective teachers, across various institutions, subject areas and NQF levels. The outcome of the research is a toolkit of commonly used practices titled Guidelines for Good-practice in Embedding Employability Skills. These are easy to embed into teaching practice and likely to be effective for learners in diverse contexts

Quantifying and Comparing the Physical Characteristics of Sub-Elite Level University Age Rugby Players from New Zealand and Japan

    Get PDF
Objectives: To quantify and compare the physical characteristics of sub-elite university age rugby players from New Zealand and Japan. Methods: Fifty-seven athletes from New Zealand (n=28) and Japan (n=29) were assessed using a battery of standardised testing protocols to determine individual physical characteristics. Athletes were measured for height, weight, body composition (sum of 8 skinfolds), flexibility (sit and reach) muscular strength (Predicted 1RM back-squat and bench-press), muscular power (counter-movement jump and bench-throw), muscular endurance (60s pull-ups and push-ups), speed (10,20 and 40m sprint), change of direction speed (505 agility test), aerobic capacity (multi-stage shuttle run test) and repeated sprint ability (repeated sprint ability test). Results: The differences between the New Zealand and Japanese athletes are minimal. However, the New Zealand athletes tested significantly better (p < 0.05) than the Japanese athletes for flexibility (27.81 ± 7.27cm vs 13.15 ± 6.65cm) and 10m sprint speed (1.76 ± 0.08s vs 1.81 ± 0.08s). Japanese athletes tested significantly better (p < 0.05) than their New Zealand counterparts for counter-movement jump (72.91 ± 6.69cm vs 59.68 ± 7.77cm), bench-throw (1215.38 ± 218.14w vs 825.9 ± 209.45w), 60s push-up endurance (65.63 ± 16.68 vs 53.63 ± 12.87) and repeated sprint ability test difference (0.49 ± 0.3s vs 0.25 ± 0.07s). No significant differences were evident for all other measured variables. Conclusion: The physical characteristics of New Zealand and Japanese sub-elite university age rugby players are similar. However, the New Zealand athletes showcase superior 10m sprint speed and hamstring and lower back flexibility. The Japanese athletes showcased superior lower body power, upper body power, muscular endurance and repeated sprint abilities

    Narrative Inquiry: Writing historiography

    Get PDF
This article explores the contribution that narrative can make to more mainstream historiography. It is an approach that is better positioned to give readers an opportunity to understand and perhaps empathise with individual experiences, as a facet of a wider issue under inquiry. The article draws on a PhD narrative inquiry which uses narrative as method and text to investigate how people with Scottish and Irish backgrounds live out their connections to their cultural traditions in Aotearoa New Zealand. Planned as an exploration of the discursive construction of culture and identity, I came to see the inquiry as historiography, though different from mainstream western historiography. This commentary focuses on the explicit presence of the researcher/writer in the text, the use of longer interview narratives which can present issues of memory and perceptions of truth, and finally the importance of the reader or audience in narrative inquiry as an approach to history

Issues in Converting to the Xero Accounting System Platform

    Get PDF
In current times it has been seen an increased uptake of client organisations moving to the Xero accounting system platform. With increased uptake, there has been increased exposure to risk and issues upon implementing the new system. Literature supports the idea that shifting accounting systems can be a relatively risk involved process and various considerations should take place. This report seeks to summarise the current environment leading consumers to use Xero as an accounting system, identify the major issues faced upon converting to Xero platform and the risks of conversion, and identify the key considerations which may aid in reducing the level of risk involved in a Xero conversion. To do this six semi-structured interviews were conducted with employees of a Hamilton office with a thematic analysis conducted on the results to draw conclusions. It was found that the time element, data and change management were the main factors surrounding issues upon converting to the Xero accounting system platform. Recommendations determined from the analysis are that the organisation could implement a more stringent and structured change management programme surrounding new conversions, including the introduction and adaptation of process diagrams as change management tools. Investment in training client employees as change drivers would also prove beneficial. The organisation Hamilton could also implement a structured communication plan for clients during and post conversion, and invest in continuous training for both staff and clients of the firm. The study undertaken was limited by the organisational context, being focussed on a sample taken from six employees only, therefore, generalisations may not be able to be made from this research of the holistic conversion environment. Further research may involve the surveying of external parties such as clients to increase the reliability and validity of the results
