‘If a place can be defined as relational, historical and concerned with identity, then a space which cannot be defined as relational, or historical, or concerned with identity will be a non-place.’ The French anthropologist Marc Augé, in his influential book Non-Places: An Introduction to an Anthropology of Supermodernity, cited examples of transient “non-place” as including airport lounges, supermarkets, shopping malls, and service stations etc. In the work Gas Station #3, 23/3/17, I have attempted to abstract the building from its surroundings, to heighten the disconnect from place to non-place. Often in my work, there is a tension between what the photographs describe and what they reveal. I am exploiting the potential of photography’s indexicality - when it is at its most factual, is often when it is most obscure. Marc Augé, Non-Places: An Introduction to Anthropology of Supermodernity, 1995, Verso. Museum statement: This year’s judge is Director of City Gallery Wellington, Elizabeth Caldwell, who brings more than 25 years’ experience in New Zealand’s visual arts sector. “From its inception, the National Contemporary Art Award has attracted artists of the highest calibre and generated vital critical dialogue,” she says. “I am honoured to have been asked to contribute to the legacy of this prestigious award. Past award recipients have been distinguished by their ambition, boldness, originality and technical prowess.” Now in its 18th year, the National Contemporary Art Award will culminate with a premier exhibition at Waikato Museum from 29 July to 5 November 2017. The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on 28 July. Waikato Museum Director Cherie Meecham says the award and exhibition is a highlight of New Zealand’s arts calendar. “The exhibition provides a valuable site for artistic expression and debate, and an important record of New Zealand contemporary art,” says Ms Meecham. “It never fails to generate entries which push the boundaries and break the rules to create a unique and significant visual experience.

This work is a projected terrain map of Hamilton city with an animation showing the development of the roads and populated areas from pre-settlement through to 2017. The timelapse shows the growth of Hamilton and its landmarks, with sections of ring road highlighted as they appear. The map elevations are based on NASA Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM) Data. The terrain map was 3D modelled using this data and then converted into laser-cut layers which were hand assembled to create the three-dimensional map. This map was then projected onto with an animation based on historic maps and data gathered as part of the exhibition development process

Assessing the impact of a cloud-based learning platform on student motivation and ownership of learning

Has the KuraCloud learning platform increased student motivation and ownership of their learning? Cloud-based educational technologies are used with the expectation that they will assist students to become life-long learners. These technologies give students more control over their learning and this has been shown to motivate them to work harder (Yurco, 2014). This research examines the impact of a recently implemented cloud-based learning platform (KuraCloud) on student motivation and ownership of their learning. All students enrolled in the undergraduate Bachelor of Nursing programme at Wintec will be invited to participate in an online survey. Areas that will be explored to assess motivation include whether students feel more motivated, whether they feel encouraged to seek extra information about topics, and whether their participation is influenced by particular aspects and exercises within the KuraCloud lessons. Areas that will be explored to assess ownership of learning include whether the KuraCloud lessons helped them to learn independently, to problem-solve, and to understand the topic content and the lesson concepts. The research has not been completed yet, but the results will be presented at the conference. It is expected that the results will inform future planning to enhance student motivation and ownership of learning using this technology

On embarking on an Extensive Reading programme the teaching team at our institution wanted to know if an ER programme would assist the development of reading habits among the Level 1 and 2 cohort at our institution, who are beginner second language readers. From both quantitative and qualitative evidence gathered over a semester we concluded that when a number of supporting factors combine together that reading habits may start to develop in both print-based and digital environments

    New Horizons and Strong Foundations

Editorial:It is our pleasure to introduce the final 2017 edition of the ANZASW Journal. It has been a tumultuous year politically, a busy year for our editorial team and, without doubt, a demanding time for all those engaged in social work practice in Aotearoa New Zealand. However, as the cliché goes, times of challenge and change can present new possibilities; magic is to be had at the ragged edges of our horizons rather than in the comfortable routines of our working lives. We think it is fair to say that social workers are entering a phase of cautious optimism about our capacity to contribute, practically and conceptually, to progressive social development in this place and at this time

This small mixed methods study demonstrates that an experiential approach to teaching quality improvement processes is effective. HCP’s develop the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct audits. There are improvements in knowledge translation from theory to practice and potentially improvements in patient outcomes, although this was not an end point of this study
