Ukraine and the Legal Accountability of Russia: The Emergence of a New Global Order

    No full text
This book explains how the response to Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine has transformed international law. It analyzes the significance of the resurrection of the UN General Assembly’s Uniting for Peace mechanism, the insertion of the International Criminal Court into world politics at the highest level, and the creation of new types of investigatory mechanisms and tribunals. It explores groundbreaking developments related to war reparations, the crime of aggression and attacks on the environment. And it makes the case that, rather than personifying the failure of international law, the Russia-Ukraine war has demonstrated its continuing relevance and resilience in surprising ways. This work will be compelling reading for academics, researchers and policy-makers working in the areas of International Criminal Law, International Humanitarian Law and the Law of Armed Conflict.https://engagedscholarship.csuohio.edu/fac_books/1072/thumbnail.jp

The Routledge Handbook of Organizational Leadership Communication

    No full text
This handbook captures a rapidly developing body of scholarship to map out the terrain of leadership communication and stimulate interdisciplinary dialogue among leadership communication scholars for future research. The Routledge Handbook of Organizational Leadership Communication surveys various areas of leadership communication, critically assesses their development, and proposes guidance for future research. It begins by addressing prominent theories or emerging theoretical perspectives that help conceptualize leadership communication, ranging from collective leadership approaches and critical perspectives to theories of practice and communicative constitution of organization. The second section focuses on reviewing the latest research on leadership communication in various organizational contexts, such as work teams, hybrid and virtual work contexts, and interorganizational collaboration. Informed by diverse theoretical perspectives, chapters in the final section examine the practice of leadership communication in dealing with both common and novel organizing challenges and processes, for example, the formation and execution of organizational vision and strategies, the use of emerging media technologies, and organizational decision making. The handbook will be an indispensable resource for researchers and advanced students in leadership communication and leadership studies and practicing managers and consultants in leadership and communication training and development.https://engagedscholarship.csuohio.edu/clcom_bks/1000/thumbnail.jp

Pursuing Patent Protection in the U.S. via the PCT: Legal and Practical Implications for 371 and Bypass Routes

The Patent Cooperation Treaty (“PCT”) has emerged as a pivotal mechanism for inventors and companies seeking international patent protection. The PCT provides a unified application process accepted by member countries, simplifying, and standardizing the procedural aspects of filing for patent protection in multiple countries. For inventors pursuing patent protection in the United States via the PCT, inventors must submit their application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (“USPTO”) and choose between one of two primary routes: 1) entering the U.S. national stage under 35 U.S.C. §371 (“371 route”), or 2) filing a continuation or divisional of the PCT application, also known as the “bypass” route. The decision of which of the two routes to take is far from trivial. The selected route affects various aspects of the patenting process, including filing requirements, translation obligations, restriction practices, examination timelines, patent term adjustments, and overall prosecution strategy. Choosing the most suitable route requires careful consideration of the differences and implications of each approach. This article will explore the strategic considerations patent practitioners should weigh when deciding between the two routes. Furthermore, it will examine a real-world case study to highlight the potential consequences of choosing the “wrong” route, providing valuable lessons for practitioners aiming to align their strategies with their clients\u27 interests and objectives. Finally, I propose that USPTO identify its preferred national stage entry pathway and implement targeted benefits to encourage more applicants to choose this route

The Pursuit of Municipal Sovereignty: How the Ohio Legislature Is Attempting to Violate the Right to Local Self-Governance

    No full text
This Note examines the Ohio Legislature’s recent efforts to undermine the constitutional right to local self-governance guaranteed by the Ohio’s home rule amendment within the Ohio Constitution. By focusing on Senate Bills 91, 137, and 158, it analyzes the legislative initiatives aimed at preempting municipal powers to implement participatory budgeting and ranked-choice voting systems. These bills exemplify a broader trend of the Legislature’s attempt at eroding municipal autonomy in Ohio, cutting against the principles of local sovereignty established by the 1912 Constitutional Convention. The Note argues that such preemption efforts violate the core right to self-governance as interpreted by the Ohio Supreme Court and sets a dangerous precedent. Through exploration of legislative history, judicial precedent, and the practical implications of participatory budgeting and ranked-choice voting, the Note contends that these bills are unconstitutionally written under the home-rule amendment. It calls for the judiciary to uphold municipal rights and to preserve local democracy against state overreach

The Influence of Religion on Gender Roles

    No full text
Religion plays a pivotal role in shaping cultural norms, values, and power structures within societies. Religious discourse, as a socially constructed form of knowledge, defines gender roles, norms, and stereotypes, often reinforcing systems of privilege that favor straight, cisgender, white, and male individuals. This paper explores how religious teachings contribute to gender inequality, limiting opportunities for women and marginalized groups while enforcing rigid expectations of gender identity and sexual orientation. The analysis highlights the intersection of religion and power, exploring the topic through four lenses: systems of privilege and inequality, gender, social implications, and media and culture; it also presents a future-orientated analysis. While some progress has been made in dismantling gendered hierarchies within religious institutions, deeply ingrained beliefs present significant obstacles to change. Education, open dialogue, and structural shifts are necessary to challenge and transform these power dynamics, fostering inclusivity and equity in religious and cultural spaces
