    Variation in red fox Vulpes vulpes diet in five continents

    Understanding variation in the diet of widely distributed species can help us to predict how they respond to future environmental and anthropogenic changes. We studied the diet of the red fox Vulpes vulpes, one of the world's most widely distributed carnivores. We compiled dietary data from 217 studies at 276 locations in five continents to assess how fox diet composition varied according to geographic location, climate, anthropogenic impact, and sampling method. The diet of foxes showed substantial variation throughout the species' range, but with a general trend for small mammals and invertebrates to be the most frequently occurring dietary items. The incidence of small and large mammals and birds in fox diets was greater away from the equator. The incidence of invertebrates and fruits increased with mean elevation, while the occurrence of medium-sized mammals and birds decreased. Fox diet differed according to climatic and anthropogenic variables. Diet richness decreased with increasing temperature and precipitation. The incidence of small and large mammals decreased with increasing temperature. The incidence of birds and invertebrates decreased with increasing mean annual precipitation. Higher Human Footprint Index was associated with a lower incidence of large mammals and a higher incidence of birds and fruit in fox diet. Sampling method influenced fox diet estimation: estimated percentage of small and medium-sized mammals and fruit was lower in studies based on stomach contents, while large mammals were more likely to be recorded in studies of stomach contents than in studies of scats. Our study confirms the flexible and opportunistic dietary behaviour of foxes at the global scale. This behavioural trait allows them to thrive in a range of climatic conditions, and in areas with different degrees of human-induced habitat change. This knowledge can help us to place the results of local-scale fox diet studies into a broader context and to predict how foxes will respond to future environmental changes

    Human food provisioning impacts the social environment, home range and fitness of a marine top predator

    Food provisioning promotes close interaction with wildlife but can negatively impact the targeted species. Repeated behavioural disruptions have the potential to negatively impact vital rates and have population level consequences. In Bunbury, Western Australia, food-provisioned female bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops aduncus, suffer reduced reproductive success via lower calf survival. However, the proximal causes of this long-term negative effect remain unknown. To infer processes that could lead to fitness costs, we combined network analyses, Markov Chain, regression models and kernel density estimates to evaluate the social environment, behavioural budget and home range size of provisioned dolphins relative to their nonprovisioned counterparts. We found that provisioned dolphins spent significantly less time socializing and had smaller home ranges and weaker social associations than the nonprovisioned dolphins. Overall, these findings suggest that provisioned dolphins experience a more restricted social environment among themselves, which likely results from investing time in an unnatural foraging tactic around the provisioning site, in proximity to human activities. This modified social environment associated with food provisioning and begging behaviour, reinforced by the limited time spent socializing, could affect the opportunities of calves of provisioned females to acquire fitness-enhancing skills and form essential social bonds. This study highlights the need to consider the potential impact of human activities on the social environment of animals

    Climate change risks to global forest health: Emergence of unexpected events of elevated tree mortality worldwide

    Recent observations of elevated tree mortality following climate extremes, like heat and drought, raise concerns about climate change risks to global forest health. We currently lack both sufficient data and understanding to identify whether these observations represent a global trend toward increasing tree mortality. Here, we document events of sudden and unexpected elevated tree mortality following heat and drought events in ecosystems that previously were considered tolerant or not at risk of exposure. These events underscore the fact that climate change may affect forests with unexpected force in the future. We use the events as examples to highlight current difficulties and challenges for realistically predicting such tree mortality events and the uncertainties about future forest condition. Advances in remote sensing technology and greater availably of high-resolution data, from both field assessments and satellites, are needed to improve both understanding and prediction of forest responses to future climate change

    Mindfulness and Nondual Well-Being – What is the Evidence that We Can Stay Happy?

    Research into subjective well-being (SWB) focuses on conducive life conditions, healthy cognitive-affective processes and adaptive behaviours, however, in this model, well-being fluctuates based on changing mental and physical phenomena. This inquiry explores the possibility that we can have a nondual experience of well-being that is unaffected by such movements and investigates if the literature supports this. The assertion in traditional mindfulness that the sense of self is constructed and responsible for such fluctuations is explored, along with what evidence there is that mindfulness practices deliver relevant cognitive and behavioural correlates associated with such a way of being. Proposed preconditions include (a) nondual awareness or the perception of no-self; (b) increased positive affect, decreased negative affect, and increased self-lessness; (c) increased capacity to maintain (or protect) well-being including heightened emotional self-regulation and resilience to aversive stimuli. Research findings provide some evidence that the sense of self can be both constructed and deconstructed, and that mindfulness training may target psychological dimensions that could contribute to an experience of well-being that transcends the impact of life conditions. Recommendations are made for a collaborative relationship between SWB research and mindfulness to expand the inquiry into possible causes and conditions of ‘nondual well-being’

    A novel targeted amplicon Next-Generation sequencing gene panel for the diagnosis of common variable immunodeficiency has a high diagnostic yield

    With the advent of next-generation sequencing (NGS), monogenic forms of common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) have been increasingly described. Our study aimed to identify disease-causing variants in a Western Australian CVID cohort using a novel targeted NGS panel. Targeted amplicon NGS was performed on 22 unrelated subjects who met the formal European Society for Immunodeficiencies–Pan-American Group for Immunodeficiency diagnostic criteria for CVID and had at least one of the following additional criteria: disease onset at age <18 years, autoimmunity, low memory B lymphocytes, family history, and/or history of lymphoproliferation. Candidate variants were assessed by in silico predictions of deleteriousness, comparison to the literature, and classified according to the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics–Association for Molecular Pathology criteria. All detected genetic variants were verified independently by an external laboratory, and additional functional studies were performed if required. Pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants were detected in 6 of 22 (27%) patients. Monoallelic variants of uncertain significance were also identified in a further 4 of 22 patients (18%). Pathogenic variants, likely pathogenic variants, or variants of uncertain significance were found in TNFRSF13B, TNFRSF13C, ICOS, AICDA, IL21R, NFKB2, and CD40LG, including novel variants and variants with unexpected inheritance pattern. Targeted amplicon NGS is an effective tool to identify monogenic disease-causing variants in CVID, and is comparable or superior to other NGS methods. Moreover, targeted amplicon NGS identified patients who may benefit from targeted therapeutic strategies and had important implications for family members

    Methamphetamine exposure during pregnancy: A meta-analysis of child developmental outcomes

    This paper examines developmental outcomes for children prenatally exposed to methamphetamine through maternal use. PSYCHINFO, Scopus, PubMed and ERIC databases were systematically searched for studies up to December 2020. The search identified 38 articles examining cognitive, language, motor and neuroanatomical outcomes in children from birth to 16 years. Study quality was appraised using the Newcastle Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale. Findings from neuroanatomical studies suggested that prenatal methamphetamine exposure may alter whole brain microstructure and reduce subcortical volumes across multiple brain regions. Meta-analysis of 14 studies using a random-effects model revealed associations between exposure and poorer intellectual functioning (Cohen’s d = 0.89, 95 % CI: 0.47–1.30), problem solving skills (Cohen’s d = 0.82, 95 % CI: 0.07 −1.56), short-term memory (Cohen’s d = 0.91, 95 % CI: 0.38–1.43), and language development (Cohen’s d = 0.74, 95 % CI: 0.30–1.18). These results emphasise the significant impact of intrauterine methamphetamine exposure across multiple areas of child development, noting that limited total sample size, heterogeneity between studies and control for confounds suggested further studies are required. There is a need for further intervention studies to identify effective prevention and harm minimisation approaches

    The impacts of microplastics (MPs) pollution on the nitrogen (N) cycle in soil ecosystems have attracted worldwide attention. Meanwhile, dissolved organic matter (DOM)-rich hydrochar (HBC) is being tried as an emerging soil conditioner for gaseous N reduction load to the atmosphere. However, the influence of MPs and HBC on soil DOM and ammonia (NH3) volatilization in wheat soils remains poorly understood. In this study, a soil column experiment was established in wheat growing soils to determine the impacts of HBC, MPs (i.e., polyethylene and polyacrylonitrile), and the co-occurrence of HBC and MPs (HBC + MPs) on soil NH3 volatilization, physicochemical properties and wheat growth. In comparison with the control (CK, without MPs or HBC), HBC, MPs, and HBC + MPs reduced cumulative NH3 volatilization by 45.4%, 66.7–67.4% and 29.8–58.7%, respectively. Soil DOM fulvic acid-like and humic aid substance abundances of the other treatments were increased by 18.5–56.2% and 12.7–39.3%, respectively, compared to CK. Besides, soil NH3 fluxes were positively correlated to soil NH4+-N concentration at basal fertilization and soil NO3−-N concentration at first supplementary fertilization. HBC, MPs and HBC + MPs treatments promoted soil urease activity and plant N uptake by 6.5–24.2% and 31.9–74.3%, respectively, compared to CK. This study provides an insight into the variation of NH3 volatilization caused by anthropogenic carbon in wheat soil ecosystems

    An examination into the mental and physical effects of a saffron extract (affron®) in recreationally-active adults: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study

    Background Saffron, derived from the stigmas of the Crocus Sativus flower, has been shown in several studies to improve mood and wellbeing in adults experiencing low mood and anxiety. The goals of this study were to examine its mental and physical effects in healthy, recreationally active adults. Methods In this 6-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 62 adults engaging in regular exercise were recruited and randomized to receive a placebo or 28 mg daily of a standardized saffron extract (affron®). Self-report outcome measures include the Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale, Profile of Mood States, and Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System-29. Participants also wore a wrist-worn heart rate, activity, and sleep monitoring device (WHOOP) to measure changes in sleep quality, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability. To help identify mechanisms of action associated with saffron intake, changes in plasma concentrations of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, oxytocin, and neuropeptide Y were also measured. Results Based on data collected from all participants, there were no statistically significant between-group differences in changes in any of the outcome measures. However, when changes were analyzed by sex, there were statistically significant greater increases in enjoyment associated with exercise (p =.009) and heart rate variability (p =.001) in male participants taking saffron compared to the placebo. No statistically significant between-group differences were identified in females. Conclusions The results of this trial suggest saffron may have beneficial effects in recreationally active males, as evidenced by increased exercise enjoyment and heart rate variability. However, no such benefits were identified in females. Future research using larger sample sizes, varying treatment periods, and additional outcome measures will be required to validate the results from this study and help clarify the mechanisms of action associated with saffron intake.     Transcriptional basis of psoriasis from large scale gene expression studies: The importance of moving towards a precision medicine approach

    Transcriptome profiling techniques, such as microarrays and RNA sequencing (RNA-seq), are valuable tools for deciphering the regulatory network underlying psoriasis and have revealed large number of differentially expressed genes in lesional and non-lesional skin. Such approaches provide a more precise measurement of transcript levels and their isoforms than any other methods. Large cohort transcriptomic analyses have greatly improved our understanding of the physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying disease pathogenesis and progression. Here, we mostly review the findings of some important large scale psoriatic transcriptomic studies, and the benefits of such studies in elucidating potential therapeutic targets and biomarkers for psoriasis treatment. We also emphasised the importance of looking into the alternatively spliced RNA isoforms/transcripts in psoriasis, rather than focussing only on the gene-level annotation. The neutrophil and blood transcriptome signature in psoriasis is also briefly reviewed, as it provides the immune status information of patients and is a less invasive platform. The application of precision medicine in current management of psoriasis, by combining transcriptomic data, improves the clinical response outcome in individual patients. Drugs tailored to individual patient’s genetic profile will greatly improve patient outcome and cost savings for the healthcare system
