Community views on ‘Can perinatal services safely identify Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents experiencing complex trauma?’
Family and extended kinship systems which nurture healthy, happy children are central to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. Since colonisation, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities have been impacted by intergenerational cycles of trauma, stemming from colonial violence, genocidal policies and discrimination, including the forced removal of children from their families. Becoming a parent offers a unique life-course opportunity for trauma recovery and preventing intergenerational trauma. However, identifying or ‘recognising’ complex trauma carries significant risk of harm for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents due to reactive prenatal child protection involvement potentially compounding experiences of trauma, and limited benefits due to lack of culturally appropriate support. The Aboriginal-led participatory Healing the Past by Nurturing the Future project aims to co-design safe, accessible and feasible perinatal awareness, recognition, assessment and support strategies for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents experiencing complex trauma. This paper presents views of 38 workshop participants to determine prerequisites for ensuring benefits outweigh risks of assessment to safely recognise parents experiencing complex trauma, consistent with screening criteria. Six essential elements were identified from thematic analysis: high-quality holistic care; cultural, social and emotional safety; empowerment, choice and control; flexible person-centred approaches; trusting relationships; and sensitive, skilled communication
In Vitro demonstration of targeted phage therapy and competitive exclusion as a novel strategy for decolonization of Extended-Spectrum-Cephalosporin-Resistant Escherichia coli
Extended-spectrum cephalosporin-resistant (ESC-R) Escherichia coli have disseminated in food-producing animals globally, attributed to horizontal transmission of blaCTX-M variants, as seen in the InCI1-blaCTX-M-1 plasmid. This ease of transmission, coupled with its demonstrated long-term persistence, presents a significant One Health antimicrobial resistance (AMR) risk. Bacteriophage (phage) therapy is a potential strategy in eliminating ESC-R E. coli in food-producing animals; however, it is hindered by the development of phage-resistant bacteria and phage biosafety concerns. Another alternative to antimicrobials is probiotics, with this study demonstrating that AMR-free commensal E. coli, termed competitive exclusion clones (CECs), can be used to competitively exclude ESC-R E. coli. This study isolated and characterized phages that lysed E. coli clones harboring the InCI1-blaCTX-M-1 plasmid, before investigation of the effect and synergy of phage therapy and competitive exclusion as a novel strategy for decolonizing ESC-resistant E. coli. In vitro testing demonstrated superiority in the combined therapy, reducing and possibly eliminating ESC-R E. coli through phage-mediated lysis coupled with simultaneous prevention of regrowth of phage-resistant mutants due to competitive exclusion with the CEC. Further investigation into this combined therapy in vivo is warranted, with on-farm application possibly reducing ESC-R prevalence, while constricting newly emergent ESC-R E. coli outbreaks prior to their dissemination throughout food-producing animals or humans
Exercise training does not affect heat tolerance in Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha)
The progression of climate warming will expose ectotherms to transient heatwave events and temperatures above their tolerance range at increased frequencies. It is therefore pivotal that we understand species' physiological limits and the capacity for various controls to plastically alter these thresholds. Exercise training could have beneficial impacts on organismal heat tolerance through improvements in cardio-respiratory capacity, but this remains unexplored. Using juvenile Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), we tested the hypothesis that exercise training improves heat tolerance through enhancements in oxygen-carrying capacity. Fish were trained once daily at 60% of their maximum sustainable swim speed, UCRIT, for 60 min. Tolerance to acute warming was assessed following three weeks of exercise training, measured as the critical thermal maximum (CTMAX). CTMAX measurements were coupled with examinations of the oxygen carrying capacity (haematocrit, haemoglobin concentration, relative ventricle size, and relative splenic mass) as critical components of the oxygen transport cascade in fish. Contrary to our hypothesis, we found that exercise training did not raise the CTMAX of juvenile Chinook salmon with a mean CTMAX increase of just 0.35 °C compared to unexercised control fish. Training also failed to improve the oxygen carrying capacity of fish. Exercise training remains a novel strategy against acute warming that requires substantial fine-tuning before it can be applied to the management of commercial and wild fishes
ICTV Virus Taxonomy Profile: Potyviridae 2022
The family Potyviridae includes plant viruses with single-stranded, positive-sense RNA genomes of 8–11 kb and flexuous filamentous particles 650–950 nm long and 11–20 nm wide. Genera in the family are distinguished by the host range, genomic features and phylogeny of the member viruses. Most genomes are monopartite, but those of members of the genus Bymovirus are bipartite. Some members cause serious disease epidemics in cultivated plants. Livestock exposure to bushfires and meat, offal and carcase quality: Is there an association?
The occurrence of bushfires (wildfires) is increasing with climate change in many areas of the world. In Australia, the 2019/20 bushfire season involved a particularly severe and widespread fire emergency (the ‘Black Summer’ bushfires). Understanding of how exposure to bushfires affects specific disease processes in livestock is limited. This research investigated spatiotemporal relationships between exposure to bushfires and observations of pneumonia and pleurisy in slaughtered sheep, and meat quality in slaughtered cattle. Two related cross-sectional studies were undertaken using historical abattoir monitoring data from the National Sheep Health Monitoring Project and the Meat Standards Australia Program. The study area involved the Australian states of New South Wales and Victoria, and the Australian Capital Territory, which were heavily affected by the ‘Black Summer’ bushfires. Carcase data were matched to fire occurrence data and to potential confounders including rainfall, pasture growth and pasture biomass indices for the farm of origin. The predictive approach to modelling included generalised additive mixed effects models and a generalised linear mixed model. Consistent though imprecise trends in pneumonia occurrence in sheep carcases were observed across time and distance since exposure to fire, with sheep slaughtered in the immediate aftermath of exposure to high intensity fires at a close distance having the highest occurrence (3.78 cases per 1000 sheep slaughtered 5 days after exposure to medium-to-high intensity fire at 0.5 km distance (95% CI 0.48, 30.02), compared to 0.387 cases per 1000 slaughtered sheep (95% CI 0.147, 1.02) across the study population). However, the economic implications of this for producers and processors are considered to be very limited. No such trends were observed in regards to pleurisy occurrence in sheep. Consistent trends were observed in meat quality in cattle carcases, with lower meat quality scores observed in cattle slaughtered after close proximity to fire (mean MSA index of 57.12 for cattle slaughtered 5 days after exposure to medium-to-high intensity fire at 0.5 km distance (95% CI 56.91, 57.34), compared to a mean of 57.65 (95% CI 57.60, 57.71) across the study population). In the aftermath of exposure to mid-to-high intensity fires, this may warrant consideration in withholding cattle from slaughter from an economic perspective, after decisions based on welfare grounds have been made. These observations will inform practical recommendations to improve health and productivity outcomes in management of bushfire-affected livestock. The observed trends may reflect causal relationships, but this requires further investigation with specific explanatory modelling studies
Plant size and neighbourhood characteristics influence survival and growth in a restored ex‐agricultural ecosystem
Restoring woody vegetation on degraded agricultural land is a widespread and common ecological restoration practice. However, highly variable plant survival and growth limit outcomes for many projects. Inconsistent reporting and monitoring of projects mean that an assessment of the relative importance of community-assembly processes is limited, particularly over longer timescales.
We use 7 years of monitoring data of nearly 2000 native trees and shrubs in a restoration project on ex-agricultural land in south-western Australia to test the potential effects of facilitation or competition from neighbouring plants, as well as look for patterns in their interaction with the attributes of individuals and species traits.
Overall, plant size was the strongest single predictor of survival and incremental growth. Individual plants in neighbourhoods with higher inter-generic basal area were more likely to survive, with this effect strongest in smaller individuals. When plants were larger, they were less likely to grow when in neighbourhoods with high intra-generic basal area. Taller-growing plants (higher species maximum height) were more likely to survive when individuals were small (basal area of 1–10 cm2), compared with shorter growing plants. Growth was also more likely in taller-growing plants, and this relationship increased with the size of the individual. Recruitment was very low, with just 148 new recruits recorded across the 42 plots over 7 years.
Maximizing the growth of plants in restorations in the early stages may promote survival and growth in the longer term. We also demonstrate that increased levels of inter-generic neighbouring plants may improve individual plant survival in the restoration of ex-agricultural land. As a result, we suggest tailoring direct-seeding methods to minimize clustering of congeneric individuals. We also highlight the need to find means of promoting recruitment for the long-term sustainability of restoration efforts
Early diagnosis of acute kidney injury subsequent to severe hypotension and fluid resuscitation in anaesthetized dogs
Objectives
To document changes in urinary biomarker concentration and conventional diagnostic tests of acute kidney injury (AKI) following hypotension and fluid resuscitation in anaesthetized dogs.
Study design
Experimental, repeated measures, prospective study.
Animals
A group of six male adult Greyhound dogs.
Methods
Following general anaesthesia, severe hypotension was induced by phlebotomy, maintaining mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) 60 mmHg for 3 hours. Following euthanasia, renal tissue was examined by light microscopy (LM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Urinary and serum concentrations of neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), cystatin C (CysC), and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), serum creatinine and urine output were measured at baseline and hourly until euthanasia. Data are presented as mean and 95% confidence interval and analysed using repeated measures analysis of variance with Dunnett’s adjustment, p < 0.05.
Results
Structural damage to proximal renal tubular cells was evident on LM and TEM. Urinary biomarker concentrations were significantly elevated from baseline, peaking 2 hours after haemorrhage at 19.8 (15.1–25.9) ng mL–1 NGAL (p = 0.002), 2.54 (1.64–3.43) mg mL–1 CysC (p = 0.009) and 2043 (790–5458) U L–1 GGT (p < 0.001). Serum creatinine remained within a breed-specific reference interval in all dogs. Urinary protein–creatinine ratio (UPC) was significantly elevated in all dogs from 1 hour following haemorrhage.
Conclusions and clinical relevance
Urinary NGAL, CysC and GGT concentrations, and UPC were consistently elevated within 1 hour of severe hypotension, suggesting that proximal renal tubules are damaged in the earliest stage of ischaemia-reperfusion AKI. Measurement of urinary biomarkers may allow early diagnosis of AKI in anaesthetized dogs. Urinary GGT concentration and UPC are particularly useful as they can be measured on standard biochemistry analysers
The Stateless Person, the Citizen and Human Rights: A Revised Neo-Hobbesian Theory of Human Rights for Sociology
Given the world is witness to over 80 million forcibly displaced persons, Turner’s neo-Hobbesian theory of human rights, first proposed in this journal decades ago, warrants revisiting. Turner highlights parallels between his foundationalist approach to human rights and Hobbes’ theory of the state. Both thinkers conceive of a vulnerable human in need of a protective canopy. However, Turner neglects Hobbes’ account of rights, and with it the key social dimensions of Hobbes’ theory. Hobbes places great importance on the social conditions of the rights-bearing person. He contrasts two distinct social spaces inhabited by the stateless person and the citizen respectively, and the kinds of rights they hold. For Hobbes, rights are protected only in society, an ideal-typical social space secured by the state. This article proposes a revised neo-Hobbesian theory of human rights that incorporates Hobbes’ treatment of rights as a social concept
Modelling armed conflict risk under climate change with machine learning and time-series data
Understanding the risk of armed conflict is essential for promoting peace. Although the relationship between climate variability and armed conflict has been studied by the research community for decades with quantitative and qualitative methods at different spatial and temporal scales, causal linkages at a global scale remain poorly understood. Here we adopt a quantitative modelling framework based on machine learning to infer potential causal linkages from high-frequency time-series data and simulate the risk of armed conflict worldwide from 2000–2015. Our results reveal that the risk of armed conflict is primarily influenced by stable background contexts with complex patterns, followed by climate deviations related covariates. The inferred patterns show that positive temperature deviations or precipitation extremes are associated with increased risk of armed conflict worldwide. Our findings indicate that a better understanding of climate-conflict linkages at the global scale enhances the spatiotemporal modelling capacity for the risk of armed conflict
Real-time average junction temperature estimation for multichip IGBT modules with low computational cost
The junction temperature of the insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) modules is a vital parameter for the reliability of the power electronic system. For effective thermal management, it is necessary to estimate junction temperature in real time. However, existing thermal models have limitations to achieve fast temperature prediction for multichip IGBT modules. In this study, we investigate the real-time junction temperature prediction for multichip IGBT modules with low computational cost. According to the power module' structure, an average 2D thermal model with physical significance is proposed to predict the virtual junction temperature for multichip IGBT modules, which can be extracted from finite element model based on the least square method. To further improve the computational efficiency, a temperature predictor based on the staggered cycle-by-cycle calculation method is proposed and its prediction error under various extreme operation conditions is analyzed by enumeration method. Finally, the comprehensive experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed average thermal model and junction temperature prediction method
