Review: Improving the nutritional, sensory and market value of meat products from sheep and cattle
This paper focuses on improving the sensory, health attributes and meat yield of beef and lamb meats. Value for meat is defined as the weight of meat × price/kg received with price linked to eating quality. To maximise value across the supply chain, accurate carcass grading systems for eating quality and yield are paramount. Grading data can then be used to target consumers’ needs at given price points and then to tailor appropriate production and genetic directions. Both the grading methodologies and key phenotypes are complex and still under intensive research with international collaboration to maximise opportunities. In addition, there is value in promoting the health aspects of red meats served as whole trimmed meats. Typically, the total fat content is relatively low (less than 5%) and for forage systems, they deliver a very significant content of long-chain n-3 fatty acids. Further research is needed to clarify the healthiness or otherwise of ground beef served as burgers given the fat content is typically 20% or more. It is important to continue to improve the feedback to producers regarding the quantity and quality of the products they produce to target new value opportunities in a transparent and quantitative manner
Suitable electrode materials for hybrid capacitors
Li- and Na-ion batteries and supercapacitors are finding applications for electrical energy storage for power grid stabilization, domestic and utility renewable energy storage, and high energy density applications such as transportation, entertainment, and computing. Major challenges in the use of these systems include cost, safety, and environmental impact. Cost is generally tied to the electrode materials and the electrolytes used. Safety issues mainly arise from the thermal stability and toxicity of the materials used. Environmental issues are related to the origin of materials used and the issues associated with their recycling/disposal. This chapter provides an overview of the importance of hybrid supercapacitors, and a comprehensive summary of research on electrode materials and requirements placed on using composite electrodes for this system. An emphasis is placed on the synergistic effects of the raw material composites on the performance characteristics of supercapacitors
Delivering blended learning to transnational students: Students’ perceptions and needs-satisfaction
Transnational education (TNE) has grown significantly in developing countries but providing quality and scaling to large student numbers is a challenge for universities. Blended learning offers a potential solution for scaling at high quality. A large-scale project delivering a blended learning programme for TNE students in South-East Asia was evaluated. The aim of this research was to assess the students’ perceptions of the changes from predominantly face-to-face to blended mode. A student voice survey based on self-determination theory was administered to participating students (n = 1718) to assess their needs, satisfaction and frustration levels. All students found the online resources useful. Students who had experienced the previous delivery of education experienced higher levels of frustration. Conversely, students commencing after the changes had been implemented reported higher levels of satisfaction and lower frustration. Furthermore, mature-age students who attended evening classes perceived the blended approach more positively
A community approach of pathogens and their arthropod vectors (ticks and fleas) in dogs of African Sub-Sahara
Background
Arthropod-borne pathogens and their vectors are present throughout Africa. They have been well-studied in livestock of sub-Saharan Africa, but poorly in companion animals. Given the socio-economic importance of companion animals, the African Small Companion Animal Network (AFSCAN), as part of the WSAVA Foundation, initiated a standardized multi-country surveillance study.
Methods
Macro-geographic variation in ectoparasite (ticks and fleas) and pathogen communities in dogs was assessed through molecular screening of approximately 100 infested dogs in each of six countries (Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda and Namibia), both in rural and urban settings. The most important intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors within the subpopulation of infested dogs were evaluated.
Results
Despite the large macro-geographic variation in the dogs screened, there was no consistent difference between East and West Africa in terms of the diversity and numbers of ticks. The highest and lowest numbers of ticks were found in Nigeria and Namibia, respectively. Most often, there was a higher diversity of ticks in rural habitats than in urban habitats, although the highest diversity was observed in an urban Uganda setting. With the exception of Namibia, more fleas were collected in rural areas. We identified tick species (including Haemaphysalis spinulosa) as well as zoonotic pathogens (Coxiella burnetti, Trypanosoma spp.) that are not classically associated with companion animals. Rhipicephalus sanguineus was the most abundant tick, with a preference for urban areas. Exophilic ticks, such as Haemaphysalis spp., were more often found in rural areas. Several multi-host ticks occurred in urban areas. For R. sanguineus, housing conditions and additional pets were relevant factors in terms of infestation, while for a rural tick species (Haemaphysalis elliptica), free-roaming dogs were more often infested. Tick occurrence was associated to the use of endoparasiticide, but not to the use of ectoparasiticide. The most prevalent tick-borne pathogen was Hepatozoon canis followed by Ehrlichia canis. High levels of co-parasitism were observed in all countries and habitats.
Conclusions
As dogs share a common environment with people, they have the potential to extend the network of pathogen transmission to humans. Our study will help epidemiologists to provide recommendations for surveillance and prevention of pathogens in dogs and humans
Spectroscopic Study of the Behavior of Mo(VI) and W(VI) Polyanions in Sulfuric–Phosphoric Acid Mixtures
The solution chemistry of Mo(VI) and W(VI) in mixtures of sulfuric and phosphoric acids is relevant to the development of practicable hydrometallurgical processes for the recovery and separation of these two elements from low-grade scheelite ores. The behavior of Mo(VI) and W(VI) in such mixtures has been studied using X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) spectroscopies, along with electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ESI-TOF-MS). Where applicable, these techniques have produced a self-consistent picture of the similarities and differences between the chemical speciation of Mo(VI) and W(VI) as functions of solution composition, mostly at a constant phosphorous/metal (P/M; M = Mo(VI) or W(VI)) ratio of ∼1. In dilute acidic media (0.02 mol·kg–1 H+, without H2SO4), Mo(VI) exists mostly (∼60%) as P2Mo5O236– with the remaining ∼40% as β-Mo8O264–. Under the same conditions, W(VI) is largely present as NaPW11O396– (∼80%) and P2W5O236– (∼10%), with the remainder probably occurring as isopolytungstates such as W12O4212– and some tungstophosphate dimers such as P2W18O626–. At higher acid concentrations (≲5 mol·kg–1 H2SO4), polymeric Mo(VI) anions are broken down to form the oxocations MoO22+ and Mo2O52+ and their protonated forms, with the dimers becoming increasingly dominant at higher acidities (∼80% in 5 mol·kg–1 H2SO4). In stark contrast, W(VI) polyanions do not decompose at higher acidities but instead form (∼70% in 0.6 mol·kg–1 H2SO4) a Keggin ion, PW12O403–. Further acidification with H2SO4 results in the agglomeration of this Keggin ion, forming clusters of about 50 and 100 Å in diameter that ultimately produce crystalline precipitates, which could be identified in part by their X-ray diffraction patterns. Possible application of these findings to the hydrometallurgical separation of Mo and W using acidic solutions is briefly discussed, based on a limited number of batch solvent extractions
Whole genome and exome sequencing reference datasets from a multi-center and cross-platform benchmark study
With the rapid advancement of sequencing technologies, next generation sequencing (NGS) analysis has been widely applied in cancer genomics research. More recently, NGS has been adopted in clinical oncology to advance personalized medicine. Clinical applications of precision oncology require accurate tests that can distinguish tumor-specific mutations from artifacts introduced during NGS processes or data analysis. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop best practices in cancer mutation detection using NGS and the need for standard reference data sets for systematically measuring accuracy and reproducibility across platforms and methods. Within the SEQC2 consortium context, we established paired tumor-normal reference samples and generated whole-genome (WGS) and whole-exome sequencing (WES) data using sixteen library protocols, seven sequencing platforms at six different centers. We systematically interrogated somatic mutations in the reference samples to identify factors affecting detection reproducibility and accuracy in cancer genomes. These large cross-platform/site WGS and WES datasets using well-characterized reference samples will represent a powerful resource for benchmarking NGS technologies, bioinformatics pipelines, and for the cancer genomics studies
An ultra-specific image dataset for automated insect identification
Automated identification of insects is a tough task where many challenges like data limitation, imbalanced data count, and background noise needs to be overcome for better performance. This paper describes such an image dataset which consists of a limited, imbalanced number of images regarding six genera of subfamily Cicindelinae (tiger beetles) of order Coleoptera. The diversity of image collection is at a high level as the images were taken from different sources, angles and on different scales. Thus, the salient regions of the images have a large variation. Therefore, one of the main intentions in this process was to get an idea about the image dataset while comparing different unique patterns and features in images. The dataset was evaluated on different classification algorithms including deep learning models based on different approaches to provide a benchmark. The dynamic nature of the dataset poses a challenge to the image classification algorithms. However transfer learning models using softmax classifier performed well on the current dataset. The tiger beetle classification can be challenging even to a trained human eye, therefore, this dataset opens a new avenue for the classification algorithms to develop, to identify features which human eyes have not identifie
Defining an adipose tissue single cell atlas to understand metabolic disease in HIV
Background: Adipose tissue (AT) is a critical regulator of metabolic health and is emerging as important in HIV. Despite this, data on the complex cellular milieu and immune regulation are lacking. We sought to assess the AT microenvironment in persons with HIV (PWH).
Methods: We performed subcutaneous abdominal liposuction and isolated the stromal vascular fraction (SVF) from 16 HIV-negative diabetics, 16 HIV-positive non-diabetics and 16 HIV-positive diabetics on long-term ART. Cells were stained with a panel of 5’ DNA-sequence tagged antibodies (TotalSeq-C) that represented standard lineages, activation and regulatory markers (45 antibodies). For the analysis, CellRanger (version 3.0.0) was used to demultiplex the raw sequencing data, extract filter and correct barcodes and unique molecular identifiers, remove cDNA PCR duplicates and align reads to the human transcriptome (GRCh38). The resulting BAM files and filtered count matrices were used in analyses. We assessed the AT cell types and their association of these subsets with the preadipocytes (Spearman rank correlation).
Results: Agnostic to metabolic disease, PWH had lower proportions of pre-adipocytes (median 20.4% in non-diabetic and 36.4% in diabetic) compared with HIV-negative diabetic participants (62.7%) (Figure 1). The proportion of CD8 T cells, monocytes and NK cells were significantly higher in PWH compared with HIV-negative participants, irrespective of metabolic disease. Pre-adipocyte and NK cells were inversely related in non-diabetic PWH (r = _0.68, p = 0.005), diabetic PWH (r = _0.70, p = 0.004) and HIV-negative diabetics (r = _0.51, p = 0.05). A similar trend was observed between CD8 T cells and pre-adipocytes.
Conclusions: We have generated a detailed atlas of AT SVF by HIV and diabetes status and show that PWH have higher proportions of NK and T cells compared with diabetic HIV negative. We hypothesize that this may correlate with the HIV reservoir. Future studies will pair this data with measurements of the HIV reservoir quantification and ART drug levels to understand how AT contributes to viral persistence
New nomenclatural and taxonomic adjustments in Dracaena (Asparagaceae)
Recent molecular phylogenetic studies showed that the genus Sansevieria (excluding S. sambiranensis) forms a monophyletic clade nested within the paraphyletic genus Dracaena. Consequently, the genus Sansevieria was sunk into the genus Dracaena and new combinations were published to accommodate the transfer of taxa from Sansevieria into Dracaena. Since the inclusion of Sansevieria into Dracaena, new taxa have been published in Sansevieria. This paper presents fourteen name changes including twelve new combinations in Dracaena and two rank adjustments, one new synonym, and one lectotypification aiming at further standardisation of the taxonomy of Dracaena
Short-term waterlogging depresses early growth of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) on saline soils with a shallow water table in the coastal zone of Bangladesh
Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), which is widely grown globally for its high-quality edible oil, is reasonably salt and drought tolerant but it is susceptible to waterlogging. In the saline coastal zone of the Ganges delta, sunflower is often exposed to sudden heavy rainfall during early growth but plant tolerance to such events is not known. Hence, we evaluated the effect of short-term soil inundation (referred to as waterlogging) for 0, 24, 48 and 72 h on sunflower at emergence, 2-leaf, and 4-leaf stages in early- and late-sown crops under field conditions (saline, clay-textured soil, and shallow groundwater). Waterlogging for 24 h did not affect sunflower at any stage but waterlogging for 48 and 72 h suppressed emergence and growth at the 2 and 4-leaf stages. Waterlogging for 72 h completely prevented the emergence for early sowing, whereas emergence was less affected for later sowing. Shoot and root dry weight were most affected at the emergence and 2-leaf stage, not at the 4-leaf stage. In conclusion, waterlogging caused by more than 24 h soil inundation at up to the 4-leaf stage severely depressed emergence and growth, indicating the need for effective drainage at sowing of sunflower in the low-lying coastal saline zone of Bangladesh
