Endogenous signalling control of cell adhesion by using aptamer functionalized biocompatible hydrogel

    No full text
Design of biological signal-responsive biomaterials is essential for controlling cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions. Herein, we developed a dynamic hydrogel to control cell adhesion with biological signals in a cellular microenvironment. The basic principle was based on using nucleic acid aptamer to recognize cell signalling and control the display of bioligands on the hydrogel. Not only exogenous signalling but also endogenous signalling secreted by surrounding cells could activate the dynamic scaffold and tune the cell adhesion state. Since diverse aptamers have been developed, our design can be extended to multiple biological inputs. The biochemical signal-responsive system will greatly enhance the understanding of complex biological processes as well as the ability to manipulate cellular behaviors

Self-supported NiMo hollow nanorod array: an efficient 3D bifunctional catalytic electrode for overall water splitting

    No full text
Large-scale industrial application of electrochemical water splitting calls for remarkable non-noble metal electrocatalysts. Herein, we report on the synthesis of a NiMo-alloy hollow nanorod array supported on Ti mesh (NiMo HNRs/TiM) using a template-assisted electrodeposition method. The NiMo HNRs/TiM behaves as a durable efficient oxygen evolution anode with 10mA cm(-2) at an overpotential of 310 mV in 1.0 M KOH. Coupled with its superior catalytic performance for hydrogen evolution with 10mA cm(-2) at an overpotential of 92 mV, we made an alkaline electrolyzer using this bifunctional electrode with 10 mA cm(-2) at a cell voltage of 1.64 V

Hierarchically Z-scheme photocatalyst of Ag@AgCl decorated on BiVO4 (040) with enhancing photoelectrochemical and photocatalytic performance

    No full text
Crystal facet dependence, as the crucial factor for semiconductor photocatalysis, is a significant strategy for optimizing the reactivity of photocatalyst. Given that there is a strong correlation between crystal facet and photocatalytic activity, we herein designed the Ag@AgCl core shell structure decorated on (040) crystal facet of BiVO4 (Ag@AgCl/BiVO4) as a hierarchical Z-scheme photocatalytic system by a simple route. In this hybridization system, the metallic Ag species not only act as the solid-state electron mediator, but can also absorb the photons from incident light and present the SPR-effect. As expected, such Ag@AgCl/BiVO4 heterostructure exhibits highly efficient photocatalytic performance and the first-order kinetic constant of photodegradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) is 300 times of pristine BiVO4. Moreover, by means of the EIS, LSV and l-t measurements, the Ag@AgCl/BiVO4 heterostructure also presents extraordinary photoelectrochemical performance. Focus is then given toward a novel perspective for understanding the mechanism of interfacial charge transfer of photocatalytic on the basis of the BiVO4-based all-solid-state Z-scheme photocatalyst. This work is expected to open up new insights into the architectural design of novel Z-scheme photocatalysts with high photoactivity and further utilization in the field of environmental or energy. Donor-acceptor cocrystal based on hexakis (alkoxy)triphenylene and perylenediimide derivatives with an ambipolar transporting property

    No full text
An organic donor-acceptor cocrystal with an ambipolar transporting property was constructed based on N,N'-bis(1-ethylpropyl)-perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic diimide (EP-PDI) and 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexakis-(hexyloxy)-triphenylene (H6TP). The cocrystal with an alternating stacking of H6TP and EP-PDI molecules was formed through both drop-casting and spin-coating processes, especially at the optimized ratios of H6TP/EP-PDI (2/1, 1/1). The formation of the cocrystal was driven by the strong pi-pi interaction and the weaker steric hindrance, resulting from the smaller side groups, between the donor and acceptor molecules. Field effect transistors (FETs) based on the H6TP/EP-PDI cocrystal exhibited relatively balanced hole/electron transport, with a hole mobility of 1.14 x 10(-3) cm(2) V-1 s(-1) and an electron mobility of 1.40 x 10(-3) cm(2) V-1 s(-1)

Rapid synthesis of a PtRu nano-sponge with different surface compositions and performance evaluation for methanol electrooxidation

    No full text
A rapid strategy to synthesize a highly active PtRu alloy nano-sponge catalyst system for methanol electro-oxidation is presented. The greatly increased Pt utilization, anti-CO poisoning ability and electronic effect resulting from the porous nano-sponge structure could account for the performance improvement

Gold nanocluster-based vaccines for dual-delivery of antigens and immunostimulatory oligonucleotides

    No full text
We here report a facile one-pot synthesis of fluorescent gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) via the peptide bio-mineralization method, which can elicit specific immunological responses. The as-prepared peptide-protected AuNCs (peptide-AuNCs) display strong red fluorescence, and more importantly, as compared to the peptide alone, the immune stimulatory ability of the resulting peptide-AuNCs can not only be retained, but can also be efficaciously enhanced. Moreover, through a dual-delivery of antigen peptides and cytosine-phosphate-guanine (CpG) oligodeoxynucleotides (ODNs), the as-prepared peptide-AuNC-CpG conjugates can also act as smart self-vaccines to assist in the generation of high immunostimulatory activity, and be applied as a probe for intracellular imaging. Both in vitro and in vivo studies provide strong evidence that the AuNC-based vaccines may be utilized as safe and efficient immunostimulatory agents that are able to prevent and/or treat a variety of ailments

Facile synthesis of PtCu nanowires with enhanced electrocatalytic activity

    No full text
Using Te nanowires as a sacrificial template, we developed a facile wet-chemical method for the synthesis of bimetallic PtCu nanowires. The as-prepared PtCu nanowires possess a porous structure and high aspect ratio. Transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectrum elemental mapping, inductively coupled plasmamass spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurement techniques are used to analyze the structure and composition of the as-prepared nanowires. The XPS results verify that the incorporation of Cu led to the modified electronic state of Pt. Electrocatalytic results prove that the as-prepared nanowires present superior activity for methanol and ethanol electrooxidation in an alkaline solution
