    practices of the right to opacity - recipes for artfulife

    This research creation is a way to access the right to opacity. This concept will not need to go through theories in a clear way since it moves in resistance to clear definitions. Instead, it will exist in the midst of an exploration and praxes around the conceptual proposition: The right to opacity. The way of this research creation is through the creation of recipes/techniques/concepts meant to serve the formation of subjectivities, breaking fears, and stereotypes of differences within various modes of existence and experiences, such as cultural, forms of knowledge, learning, language, gender, and neurodiversity. I will be practicing some recipes to offer examples of possibilities. The work will be offered through storytelling, recipes, events, and collective gatherings. Many of the stories and recipes here deal with my experience as part of a community, coming from Syria displaced by the war, and becoming a refugee and immigrant in Montreal in the year of 2001. Yet my stories will move through and in between different aspects of this experience by not focusing only on one of the sides of what for me has many sides. I will explore the mother, the woman, the artist, the researcher, the event maker, amongst other figures that I find more interesting than staying only with the story of violence misrepresented in the more common figures of violence’s of war in the victim, the suffering, the refugee, the immigrant. Like this I aim to access relations between and through new modes of existence, sharing and belonging. I ask how one can create these relations while staying close to values or qualities of existence within various environments? How to confirm and affirm a production of the self while movements in between communities remain smooth and flourishing in each encounter and yet open to shifting as needed. Example: when I talk about identities like the Kurdish, it is not about the nationality; the Syrian, it is not only the refugees; the Canadian, it is not me, the immigrant. Or is it? When I talk about these identities, I’m posing a question of access. How to access a quality of being within all of these or one as needed, on a shifting basis. Other identity mobilities that these Thesis seeks are: The mother while being an artist. An artist and neurodiverse academic practices with no writing urges. It asks: How can one still belong while non typical practices are performed? Why would we talk about war and not love

    Complex Analytic Structure of Stationary Solutions of the Euler equations

    This work is devoted to the stationary solutions of the 2D Euler equations describing the time-independent flows of an ideal incompressible fluid. There exists an infinite-dimensional set of such solutions; however, they do not form a smooth manifold in the space of all divergence-free vector fields tangent to the boundary of the flow domain. This circumstance hinders the efforts to understand the structure of the set of stationary flows, and to further study other classes of solutions such as the time-periodic or quasiperiodic flows. The previous authors considered the solutions in the Frechet space of smooth functions and used powerful methods such as the Nash-Moser-Hamilton implicit function theorem. However, in their approach they overlook a surprising feature of the stationary flows which makes the picture much more transparent, and opens the way to further progress. This is the observation that the particle trajectories in the flow described by arbitrary solutions of the Euler equations in domains with analytic boundary are analytic curves, even if the velocity field has a finite regularity (say, belongs to the Sobolev or Holder space). In particular, for any stationary solution, the flow lines are analytic curves, despite limited regularity of the velocity field. To study the stationary flows we change the viewpoint and consider the flow field as a family of analytic flow lines non-analytically depending on parameter. We quantify the analyticity by introducing spaces of functions which have an analytic continuation to some strip containing the real axis such that on the boundary of the strip the function belongs to the Sobolev space. Further, we introduce the class of Sobolev functions of two variables which are analytic (in the above sense) with respect to one variable. Such functions describe the families of flow lines of stationary flows. These partially-analytic functions form a complex Banach space. The stationary solutions satisfy (in the new coordinates) a quasilinear elliptic equation whose local solvability is proved by using the Banach Analytic Implicit Function Theorem (BAIF Theorem). Thus we prove that the set of stationary flows is an analytic manifold in the complex Banach space of the flows (i.e. families of flow lines). In our previous work ([9]), we realized this idea in the case of stationary flows in a periodic channel with analytic boundaries. In the present work we study a more complicated case of flows in a domain close to the disc, having one stagnation point. We use polar coordinates centered at the (unknown) stagnation point. This results in an elliptic quasilinear equation in the annulus which is degenerate at one component of the boundary. This makes the analysis more difficult. We introduce function spaces which are adaptations of the Kondratev spaces to the partially-analytic setup, and prove that the problem is Fredholm in those spaces. Further we use the BAIF Theorem, and prove that in our spaces, the set of stationary flows is locally a complex-analytic manifold

    Bankruptcy prediction: A comparison of data mining models on unbalanced data and effects of sampling

    With the very unbalanced data found in financial risk prediction, this study hopes to aid in anticipating the financial risk that corporations may encounter. We can improve performance by employing oversampling and under-sampling algorithms. We were able to better understand how the performance of each classifier changed in each dataset by using a variety of classifiers across three distinctively sampled datasets. In addition, we analyzed our dataset using three different evaluation metrics: accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity, rather than being limited to just one. The results indicate that the accuracy on three separate datasets with various sampling methods differs greatly. The sensitivity and specificity of the under-sampled dataset differ from those of the original dataset and the oversampled dataset, which are fairly comparable to one another. It was discovered that gradient boosting trees produce better outcomes than other algorithms. When using oversampled data and measuring accuracy, logistic regression was found to be the most effective. However, when using under-sampled data, LightGBM Classifier had the best performance.     Endogenous tagging using CRISPR/Cas9 to study protein localization across human cell types

    Gene editing technologies have facilitated the genetic manipulation of cells to study proteins by generating knockouts, point mutations and endogenous tags. Amongst precise edits, endogenous tags provide valuable tools to study protein localization in live cells. However, precise gene editing is inefficient in mammalian cells, and generating edited cell lines is time-consuming. Therefore, most studies of cellular processes in human cells rely on other methods such as over-expression, and use cancerous or transformed cell lines that are easy to manipulate. For example, cytokinesis, the physical separation of a cell into two daughter cells at the end of mitosis, is mainly understood in the context of cancerous HeLa cells. In this thesis, I present tools and protocols to tag proteins endogenously in multiple human cell lines, which enables the study of cytokinesis proteins in their native cellular context. I first generated endogenous tags using CRISPR/Cas9 (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats; CRISPR-associated protein 9) to study protein localization during cytokinesis in different human cell lines. By characterizing cytokinesis parameters, I found that cytokinesis occurs differently in different cell lines, suggesting that the underlying mechanisms regulating cytokinesis differ with cell type. I then engineered an iPS cell line that facilitates large-scale endogenous tagging by taking advantage of a split mNeonGreen protein where the tagging fragment is short. Endogenous tagging with this system is efficient and can be scaled up for high-throughput editing and screening. This work provides new tools to study protein localization during cytokinesis and other cellular processes in human cells. It also enables comparative studies of cellular processes across human cell types to understand cellular function on the scale of all human cell types

    Nearfield Shielding and Green Shielding (Passive and Active Electromagnetic Shielding Approaches)

    Nothing comes without costs. Electromagnetic interference (EMI) has been one of the first costs humans started identifying after initial achievements on how electromagnetic waves interact with different substances. Shielding against EMI emissions became one of the prominent challenges for the Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) community. The extent of the benefits of EMI shielding ranges from healthcare applications to commercial/industrial ones. The dissertation aims to solve two major shielding problems in the context of passive and active methods. The first problem is the nearfield shielding characterization of Frequency Selective Surfaces (FSSs), where the near-field performance of FSS structures is analyzed and differentiated from far-field performance. After introducing sufficient analytical models and techniques to characterize shields' near-field responses, an analysis is provided to reveal the fundamental failure of conventional FSS-based shields in providing NF shielding. Then, a new flexible bandstop FSS is introduced that provides stable near-field (NF) characteristics in the X-band. Thorough analyses are carried out to monitor the effects of incident angle, edge diffraction, bending, and wave polarization on shielding. The dissertation investigates further the active techniques that enable the user to harness the incident signal while providing the required shielding. This part of the study investigates reconfigurable intelligent surfaces for shielding or amplification, where a space-time-modulated (STM) medium is designed as a potential solution for green shielding purposes. Then, the green shielding possibilities are investigated through four different mechanisms. It turns out that STM media can be influential for other similar purposes, encouraging future attempts to realize the media

    Altered states of consciousness have been used as transpersonal psychotherapy to treat mental illnesses. ASC allows the patient to travel to the inner world; once the patient understands the source of their problems, they appear to find the solution to their anxieties and can self-heal with these transpersonal experiences. This article introduces the use of Gas Discharge Visualization to measure ASC for the transpersonal therapist that is interested in dealing with mental conditions that can benefit from self-exploration and self-realization of consciousness states that could be responsible for the patient's mental condition. The goal of this article was to open therapists' eyes to the potential of these technologies in the use of transpersonal therapies

    The PR Commonwealth, Local Politics, and Their Effect on the Island’s Economy

    This thesis focuses on the domestic determinants of Puerto Rico’s economic evolution, intending to find what political factors indigenous to Puerto Rico explain its economic trajectory from the 1950s to the 1970s. Specifically, this thesis explores how political calculations for enhanced electoral support characterized internal political dynamics, thereby affecting discussions of the Island’s economic situation and ways to ameliorate it. Particular focus is given to critical economic sectors such as industrialism and manufacturing, tourism, agriculture, and local business. Additionally, this thesis examines how the creation of Puerto Rico’s Commonwealth status in 1952 impacted the Island’s local policies and local leaders’ economic policy choices. This research showed that Puerto Rico’s political dynamics were influenced by the Commonwealth status and produced an economic and ideological dependency on industrialism and manufacturing, resulting in the poor management of potentially promising economic sectors. It was also found that the lack of focus and attention toward government economic policies and objectives resulted from a deeply politicized environment in which most public institutions operate on the Island. Consequently, there has been in Puerto Rico a lack of long-term economic planning and convergence between the Island’s political leaders rendering the Island incapable of articulation solutions to its fragile economic situation

    CEO Gender and Company Performance during Times of COVID: Did COVID Cause Gender Discrimination in Company Leadership and Performance?

    The announcement of COVID-19 as a global pandemic had a negative impact on the economy worldwide. In this paper, we examine whether female-led companies were able to recover faster during the pandemic than male-led companies. Using a sample of 470 U.S. companies, we find that male CEOs outperformed female CEOs. The company’s current ratio, size, P/E ratio, as well as the CEO’s age are all negatively correlated with the post-announcement buy-and-hold abnormal return (BHAR) of the firm. We also find that compensation can be positively correlated with the BHAR in certain event windows
