Terayamago.

    Get PDF
This work considers Terayama Shūji as the figurehead of the intermedial art which developed in Japan in the 1960s and 1970s. Therefore the first part of the work describes the major features of New Wave and angura, placing them in the political (i.e. student movement) and cultural (i.e. Shinjuku bunka) context in order to identify the relevant intermedial connections and apply them to the analysis of Sho o suteyo machi e deyō, a Terayama’s feature-length film. Starting from Terayama’s artistic career, focus has been made on his theatrical and cinematographic works in order to define a system - called Terayamago - developing from the author reworking of theories, themes and symbols through different media. Therefore, such system defies single medium boundaries and comes to represent intermedial dynamics typical of contemporary cinema. The relationship between film and spectators serves as a case study in this regard. Terayama applies his theories on theatre to cinema and shapes a new conception of the screen and of the movie theatre into three phases, gradually involving the audience

Niche vs. central firms: Technology choice and cost-price dynamics in a differentiated oligopoly

    Get PDF
This paper is about technology choices in a differentiated oligopoly. The main questions are: whether the position in the product space affects the choice of technology, how changes in fixed costs affect price outcomes, the strategic responses to policy interventions. The industry is an oligopoly where a central firm is competing with two peripheral (or marginal) ones. The former is shown to be more ready than the latter to adopt a technology with low marginal costs and high fixed costs (Increasing Returns to Scale) rather than one with the opposite pattern (Constant Returns to Scale). The fixed cost in the IRS affects the technology configuration and hence output prices. For instance, a lower fixed cost may trigger lower prices and it is neutral only for given technologies. A price-cap may forestall a change in technologies; nondiscriminatory ad-valorem tax and taxes on variable input, or discriminatory unit taxes can also affect the technology pattern and deliver important effects on prices

"Listen Local, Act Global": Becoming Interested in and Paying Attention to (Inter)National Sounds in the Eighteenth Century

    Get PDF
This chapter examines the growing awareness of the “national properties” of sounds in the eighteenth century, mainly from a British – and more specifically Scottish – perspective, and focusses especially on phenomena such as the collection of national airs, and the ballad revival (but ‘street cries’ could have been an equally suitable example). In this history Britain holds a peculiar place. After the Act of Union of 1707 British national identity was forged (a process that took over a hundred years), and “Britishness” had to be somehow invented. Sounds and music played their part in this process of invented tradition and cultural definition

Justice and organization: confronting conceptions / Giustizia e organizzazione: concezioni a confronto

    Get PDF
This article proposes a reflection on justice within organizations. In all social areas and especially that of the workplace, people’s experience is built around stories that refer to the notion of justice. This consideration is the basis of the present effort to analyze justice theories either used by organizational scholars or which can be utilized at an organizational level. After the presentation of the “conceptions of organization”, the article proposes an original reading of the theoretical contributions on justice, which uses the aforementioned knowledge alternatives as reference. The essay ends with a confrontation between these different visions of justice, outlining research and managerial implications

On Protection and Justice The Proposals for Reform of the Common European Asylum System

    Get PDF
The reform of the Common European Asylum System (CEAS) was much wished for both by committed Europeans and by human rights advocates more generally. Ideally, the European Union (EU) would have developed a single asylum system with equal criteria applying to all Member States and full recognition of the international protection status everywhere in the Union. This would have taken care of the primary concern of the Member States, that is, the prevention of asylum seekers’ secondary movements. The abandonment of the nation-specific prerogatives would also have allowed for a focus on the asylum seekers’ needs. However, the proposals issued by the European Commission between 2015 and 2016 in no way suggest that a uniform asylum system is on the way. This paper examines the implications of some of these proposals for the governance of asylum and for the understanding of international protection as the guarantee of specific rights to foreign citizens in need. It further assesses the proposals with respect to different conceptions of global political justice. The justice conceptions of non-domination, impartiality and mutual recognition as developed in the GLOBUS project are particularly useful in both uncovering the competing reasons behind the specific direction of the proposals for reforms, and in assessing their implications

    collegArti 1/2018
