Women authors of ELT materials in Italy (1896-1918)

    Get PDF
The aim of this paper is twofold. Firstly, I present the findings of bibliographical research conducted in an attempt to identify first women authors of ELT materials in Italy. It appears that, in the period between 1896 and 1918, twenty-three different women authors produced at least one ELT publication each. Secondly, I focus on two women authors whose contribution to promoting the learning and teaching of English in that period was particularly significant. I argue that Pia Padovani’s (1904, 1906) and Anna Benedetti’s (1915) views on the goals, priorities and language teaching methodologies are of particular relevance and I analyse the prefaces to their textbooks in an attempt to amplify our knowledge of the history of English language teaching in the early 20th-century Italy

Censura e controcensura. I testi didattici inglesi nella scuola secondaria tra ideologia fascista e defascistizzazione

This essay proposes a preliminary investigation of the control measures that the fascist government in Italy and, just after the Liberation, the Allied Military Government Education Sub-commission took upon over the educative tools employed for the teaching and the study of the English language in secondary schools. The authors and editors reacted differently: some followed the Ministry’s provision and published an emended edition, others decided to interrupt the publication of the book. This study focuses on a selection of English schoolbooks that underwent the pre- and post-fascist control. The anthology Letture inglesi by Guido Fornelli, which was not republished despite the very limited number of pages censored by the Commission, and Achille Sardo’s Cento lezioni pratiche di inglese, which survived to both censorships

Appunti bibliografici sulla storia dell’insegnamento delle lingue straniere nell’Università italiana

In the recent development of linguistic historiography, the interest in foreign and second languages has developed considerably as regards the materials used to describe and learn/teach them, such as dictionaries, grammars, textbooks and other resources that have spread throughout Europe since the Renaissance. The nationalization of public education in Italy since the Unity represented an important turning point for their study, in the entire school system in the first place, and then in the universities, in which they made their way between literary and philological teachings up to the seventies of the last century, when linguistic teachings began to strengthen themselves through the creation of first and second level university chairs all over the country. The bibliography presented and commented in this study reflects these different issues and, in particular, the strong attempt made by linguists at the end of the last century to adapt university language teachings to the identity of the different faculties and the new methods of teaching

Concordance and complementarity in Intellectual Property instruments

    Get PDF
This work investigates the relationship between proxies of innovation activities, such as patents and trademarks, and firm performance in terms of revenues and growth. By resorting to the virtual universe of Italian manufacturing firms we provide a rather complete picture of the innovation activities of Italian firms, in terms of patents and trademarks, and we study whether the two instruments for protecting Intellectual Property (IP) exhibit complementarity or substitutability. In addition, and to our knowledge novel, we propose a measure of concordance (or proximity) between the patents and trademarks owned by the same firm and we then investigate whether such concordance appears to exert any effect on performance

    Mid Adriatic Deep Dataset

    No full text
This dataset is part of an ongoing larger project that aims to build a comprehensive macrobenthic dataset from the Po Plain‒Adriatic Sea system by sampling both sedimentary successions and present-day depositional surfaces. During my Ph.D. research, I processed samples taken from the Mid Adriatic Deep (MAD) and near-MAD cored sedimentary succession in the central Adriatic, that contain marine lowstand deltaic and costal deposits from the last glacial time interval. Although an abundance of data has been gathered from the sedimentary succession of the Adriatic Sea, the dynamics of the macrobenthic community preserved there has been little investigated. The taxonomic and ecological information reported in the MAD dataset will represent a keystone for enhancing the knowledge of the molluscan fauna during the last glacial period

L’arte del “puro vedere”: il ruolo dell’interprete

    Get PDF
[The arte of “pure seeing”: the role of the interpreter] A work of art happens and takes its form through the recipient’s understanding and evolves in the historical and social context in which it is from time to time interpreted. Some artists are aware of this. Even if their expressivity is different, they share the idea that the first and last source of truth lies not in an objective, devoid of life, fact, but in the human soul. Among the forerunners of the “pure seeing art”, there are Baschenis, Velázquez and Cezanne, who focused their search in the role of the interpreter, making him/her the true protagonist of their works

CATCH-EyoU. Intervention in Schools. Methodology Evaluation and Main Results. EXTRACT Portugal

    No full text
WP9 of the CATCH-EyoU project proposes a school-based socially innovative intervention that involves students and teachers. It examines how young people engage in social issues having local and European relevance, combining a participatory approach, community analysis, and structured dialogue with public authorities. The dataset contains the national report with the main results of the implementation of this intervention in the Portuguese contexts. The transcriptions and analyses of qualitative data (focus groups, interviews) contained in the report serves as the underlying data of the following scientific paper accepted for publication in the journal “Psicologia di Comunità” (https://www.francoangeli.it/riviste/Sommario.aspx?IDRivista=139&lingua=it): Joana Cruz, Carla Malafaia, Filipe Piedade, José Eduardo Silva, Isabel Menezes (2019). Promoting European active citizenship: A participatory intervention towards the politicisation of youth social concerns. Psicologia di comunità. The data has been collected from an upper secondary school in Portugal, involved in the WP9 EU citizenship education intervention. This data is made available for open access in compliance with H2020 Program regulation, following the guidelines stipulated by the Data Management Plan adopted by the CATCH-EyoU research project

PERCEIVE project - Deliverable D6.3 "Report with analysis of model behaviour and scenario analysis"

    Get PDF
The scope of the Deliverable 6.3 is to provide a concrete analysis of the behaviour of the System Dynamics (SD) model on the European Cohesion Policy (CP) system, as a part of the Working Package 6 in the context of the PERCEIVE project. The model was already presented in the Deliverables 6.1 (qualitative model) and 6.2 (quantitative model). Focusing on the two subsystems under study, namely the funds’ absorption and general public awareness, the behavioural analysis includes both: (i) quantitative sensitivity analyses of the model’s parameters on the simulation results, (ii) and qualitative insights based on real data, the model’s structure and the outcomes of the quantitative analysis. More specifically, we articulated this study in two parts according to the model’s subsystems. In the funds’ absorption subsystem, as a reminder of the problem under study, we first report a concise analysis of EU and regional evidence on absorption rates. Then, the absorption model is presented in brief, followed by an extensive sensitivity analyses of the model’s parameters. The analysis provides the major simulation findings, along with indicative policy recommendations. Finally, a comprehensive discussion of the modelling approach, based on real data and the modelling results, is presented. In the general awareness subsystem, initially the available awareness data of the related Eurobarometer’s reports are presented for the contextualization of the problem. Thereafter, the awareness model is briefly discussed, while the main sensitivity analyses results are presented along with the related recommendations. Lastly, the model’s building process and the quantitative outcomes are discussed. Overall, this final Deliverable 6.3 contributes towards: (i) identifying the major factors of the CP system that affect the local managing authorities’ (LMAs’) performance in terms of funds’ absorption, as well as the citizens’ awareness about the EU role on regional development, (ii) in order to offer meaningful managerial insights for fostering the LMA administrative capacity and increasing the general public awareness about regional CP funding benefits. The analysis of the influencing factors, along with the adoption of efficient policies, is anticipated to improve the state of the CP system and support the regional sustainability of the local communities
