Database of Resource Use efficiency indicators of lettuce and basil in response to light intensity
The database integrates raw data on resource use efficiency in indoor grown lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) and basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) plants undergoing different light intensities (100, 150, 200, 250 and 300 micromol m-2 s-1) supplied by a red (R) and blue (B) radiation (featuring 16 hours of photoperiod and a RB ratio of 3. Resource use is expressed as amount of resource needed to produce 1 gram of fresh weight (FW) and include Water Use Efficiency (WUE, g FW L-1 H2O) and Energy Use Efficiency (EUE, g FW kWh-1). Pooled data from 3 different cultivation cycles are included

Biased Health Perceptions and Risky Health Behaviors: Theory and Evidence
This paper investigates the role of biased health perceptions as driving forces of risky health behavior. We define absolute and relative health perception biases, illustrate their measurement in surveys and provide evidence on their relevance. Next, we decompose the theoretical effect into its extensive and intensive margin: when the extensive margin dominates, people (wrongly) believe they are healthy enough to “afford” unhealthy behavior. Finally, using three population surveys, we provide robust empirical evidence that respondents who overestimate their health are less likely to exercise and sleep enough, but more likely to eat unhealthily and drink alcohol daily

In this novel, references to imaginary laws and regulations are a leitmotiv. Gadda uses legal language both to depict the various situations of daily life and express moral values. In identifying five legal areas in the novel (contracts, statutes, property, trade, criminal law), the article aims to discover how legal language can contribute to plot the human discomfort
MADFORWATER. WP3 Adaptation of technologies for efficient water management and treated wastewater reuse in agriculture. Task3.3 Integrated physical and economic model for land and water use optimization. Tunisian, Egyptian and Moroccan basins
This dataset includes MADFORWATER Task 3.3 data, that were used for the development, application and calibration of an integrated agro-economic model with hydrology and water parameters for optimizing farm income, cropping pattern and water allocation in the three case studies area of MADFORWATER project. The case study areas are: the irrigated farming system in the Kafr-El-Sheikh Region (Egypt), the citrus farming system in Souss-Mass region (Morocco), and the annual and permanent irrigated farming in the Nabeul Governorate (Tunisia).
In particular, the dataset includes data on: cultivated and irrigated surface cropping patterns, irrigation requirements and schedules, water availability and water consumption, crop characteristics (yields, prices and production costs), economic performance (farm income, labor use, etc.), performance indicator of irrigation technologies.
The data scale is referred to the 3 selected basins, where the integrated technologies and strategies were tested and implemented.
The integrated model validated and tested was used in other MADFORWATER tasks, such as those developed in WP5, to develop water & land management strategies for an optimal exploitation of the irrigation technologies developed WP3, and for the assessment of the impact of economic instruments for improving irrigation efficiency and for enhancing wastewater reuse in agriculture.
Potential users for this dataset include: (i) policy-makers or other decision-makers involved in water management and planning or agricultural policy development; (ii) researchers and companies active in the fields of treated wastewater (TWW) reuse, water resources management, irrigation and agricultural and natural resource economics
Decision Support Tools for wastewater management and for water & land management in agriculture
This deliverable provides the description and the user guides for two Decision Support Tools (DSTs) relative to wastewater management and water & land management in agriculture, developed in the MADFORWATER project. The actual software and codes relative to these two DSTs have been deposited in open access repositories, and the corresponding links are reported in this deliverable.
The first DST (Poseidon 2.0) compares different water-reuse options and it shows decision makers implementable solutions for wastewater treatment which comply with local requirements. It was developed in the framework of Task 5.2 of MADFORWATER - Strategies and economic instruments for WW management. Section 2.1 describes the DST and provides the links where it can be downloaded. A dedicated handbook explaining how to use the DST is included in Appendix I.
The second DST is an integrated agro-economic model developed in Tasks 3.3 and 5.3, aimed at integrating water reuse and irrigation technologies (developed, tested and implemented in the MADFORWATER project) with economic instruments into basin-scale strategies to enhance the use of treated wastewater. Section 2.2 describes this DST and provides the links where it can be downloaded. A dedicated handbook explaining how to use the DST is included in Appendix II
Decision Support Tool for Water Reclamation Beyond Technical Considerations—Egyptian, Moroccan, and Tunisian Case Studies
While the Middle East and North African (MENA) region is facing challenges to sustain water security, water reclamation has received increasing consideration as a favorable mitigating solution. Despite the availability of adequate technologies, economic, political, legal, social, and environmental constraints often hamper stakeholders, and especially decision makers, from exploiting the existing potential into solution implementation. In the present paper, a comprehensive assessment for water reclamation and reuse was developed. This assessment consisted of 4 objectives: 1) apply a decision‐support tool (DST) for water reclamation potential for municipal wastewater, 2) apply a DST for simulating and estimating the lifecycle costs of project‐related technologies for water reclamation (municipal and industrial wastewater, as well as drainage canal water), 3) assess the national‐level conditions for water reuse with a multicriteria decision analysis (MCA), and 4) establish exemplary strategies, barriers, and measures for water reuse. The present MCA considered 6 thematic subjects: policy and institution, economy, society, water management, legislation, and environment. The assessment was applied to food and nonfood crop irrigation in Egyptian, Moroccan, and Tunisian case studies. For all defined case studies, adapted treatment trains that could treat wastewater to the desired quality at reasonable costs were identified and are presented in the present paper. Results showed that technological options are available for water reuse, but the concept is not widely implemented in Egypt, Morocco, and Tunisia. The present paper identifies key barriers and drivers for the implementation of water reclamation for irrigation. In particular, the considered countries showed different characteristics regarding efficient water management, water pricing, subsidies and wastewater tariffs, implementation of monitoring and reporting systems, or legal aspects regarding the use of reclaimed water for food crop irrigation. Further exploration of case studies on high potential water reuse and financially affordable wastewater reclamation, particularly case studies that explore the impacts of policies and practices across countries, would be useful for helping the MENA region improve their water security situation
Pensare la Pandemia
Questo volume raccoglie una serie di riflessioni sviluppatesi all’interno di un seminario internazionale organizzato da Into the Black Box e tenutosi online fra aprile e maggio 2020 per provare a pensare collettivamente la pandemia in corso sottraendosi tanto alle narrazioni dell’eccezionalità e del catastrofismo quanto a quelle del negazionismo e del complotto. Dall’arrivo del Covid-19 in Europa sono passati oramai diversi mesi in cui abbiamo visto il dibattito pubblico evolversi rapidamente – la riflessione sulle epidemie nella storia moderna o la critica delle misure di distanziamento sociale hanno lasciato spazio al tema della crisi economica e delle trasformazioni urbane, per citarne alcuni – mentre gli Stati si attrezzavano a gestire la convivenza col virus così come a fare i conti con il crollo globale della produzione. Ci sembra, tuttavia, che la situazione sia ben lungi da essersi risolta. Il volume, infatti, viene pubblicato alle porte di un autunno che pare consegnarci una nuova ondata di contagi insieme alle prime conseguenze evidenti degli effetti economici dei mesi di lockdown.

How to Lockdown an Economy: an Input Output Analysis of the Italian Case
This paper employs the most recent Input Output tables to discuss the Italian lockdown after the COVID-19 epidemics. We define “basic activities” and derive a ranking of industries which more intensively contribute to them. Confronting our results with the choices of the Italian government, we find that these were broadly correct in terms of industrial composition. However, we find that the lockdown of industries such as construction, real estate and manufacture of basic metals reveal a very conservative preferences in terms of the target share of output of essential activities (below 85 %)
