Tourist Tax and Ratings of Online Reviews
Tourist taxes represent one of the principal sources of revenue for a number of local authorities. Using a dataset of more than 300 thousands reviews on TripAdvisor, we analyze the effect of tourist taxes on online ratings posted by hotel costumers. Online ratings are strategic variables for the competitiveness of hotels and local destinations and so the assessment of the impact of tourist taxes on online reviews is important to design suitable strategies and policies both for firms and local municipalities. We show that the share of complaints about the tax increases with the tax rate, but the relationship gets weaker as the hotel quality increases, suggesting that low-quality costumers are more sensitive to tax increases. Tax mentioning reviews have on average a 20% lower rating and this difference becomes smaller and not significant for high quality hotels. We disentangle the different sources of complaining, finding that the lack of information and the cash payments weight more negatively on the average rating (respectively less 27% and 21%). Using a random-effects logit model we show that what matters for costumers is the percentage tax on the room price and not the absolute amount of the legal tax rates based on the hotel stars. This effect is present only for hotel stays with an average double room price under 100 Euros. Our results provide public authorities with useful suggestions to change the actual tax system by setting the tourist tax as an ad valorem tax on room price and assessing optimal tax rates accordingly to their incidence on the price of the stay

MedAID. WP2. Improving zootechnical performance. Raw data on Gilthead Sea Bream (Sparus aurata) feeding trials
The dataset contains the results of MedAID project in vivo feeding trials performed on Gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) at University of Bologna facilities. Each feeding trial was focused on studying the interaction between a specific environmental condition (rearing density in one, seasonal temperature changes in another, daily feeding frequencies in another one) in presence of different dietary conditions. The results of the trials were presented in the following papers:

Dalla scultura funeraria egizia alle statue greche, dai marmi di Michelangelo ai torsi di Rodin, dalle Muse Addormentate di Brâncuși alle sculture antropomorfe di Hans Arp, il protagonista della scultura è sempre stato il corpo – trasfigurato, idealizzato, alterato, ma sempre corpo, sempre quest’architettura tutta umana di sangue e muscoli. Eppure, nel lavoro di Doris Salcedo (Bogotá, 1958) è pro-prio il corpo il grande assente: nelle sue opere l’artista colombiana rielabora l’esperienza delle vittime della guerra civile, concentrandosi in particolare sui desaparecidos, individui sequestrati dalle diverse forme di potere in atto in Colombia e mai più ritrovati, individui la cui esistenza è stata, letteralmente e figurativamente, cancellata. Ricombinando mobili, vestiti ed effetti appartenuti ai desaparecidos, Salcedo intende rappresentare sia l’esperienza di queste vittime “scomparse”, sia il trauma vissuto dai loro familiari, bloccati in un quella che Freud ha definito “condizione melanconica” poiché, in assenza del corpo amato, il lavoro del lutto diviene un processo interminabile. Rielaborando un vasto universo di riferimenti – dalle riflessioni sulla violenza proposte da Agamben e Nancy, fino alle sperimentazioni spaziali di Duchamp, Beuys, Nauman e Smithson – Salcedo dà vita a una poetica originale, dove gli oggetti divengono i preziosi testimoni delle nostre esistenze. E se da un lato riesce a redimere le vittime dalla loro anonimità, dall’altro ci pone la più inquieta delle domande: che cosa rimane di noi individui quando la vita svanisce
Atti del XXIII Convegno Nazionale di Agrometeorologia Agricoltura 4.0 e cambiamento climatico: il ruolo dell’Agrometeorologia
Con il termine Agricoltura 4.0 si indica la più recente evoluzione tecnica e tecnologica che interessa il settore dell’agricoltura. Grazie all'impiego delle attuali tecnologie come Remote Sensing, Internet of Things, Intelligenza Artificiale, Big Data, Cloud Computing ecc., è possibile oggi migliorare significativamente l'efficienza delle attività agricole, e la loro resilienza ai fattori di stress. La quantità di dati di interesse agronomico che possono essere analizzati e processati grazie agli strumenti dell’Agricoltura 4.0 è davvero enorme: dati meteorologici, pedologici, stato fisiologico e fitosanitario delle colture possono essere accuratamente monitorati su ampia scala, consentendo di fornire agli agricoltori un sistema di supporto decisionale così dal mettersi al riparo il più possibile dalle intrinseche incertezze dell’attività di impresa nel settore agricolo, in un frangente storico in cui tali incertezze sono esacerbate dagli effetti del Cambiamento Climatico, il quale rappresenta sicuramente la principale sfida che oggi gli enti di ricerca in ambito agronomico, i consorzi e gli imprenditori agricoli sono chiamati ad affrontare. Il rapporto tra Agrometeorologia e Agricoltura 4.0 è quindi strettissimo, e di vitale importanza per l’evoluzione del settore. Tale evoluzione, nello specifico, è orientata verso gli obiettivi fondamentali di adattamento al Cambiamento Climatico e di mantenimento di rese alte e soddisfacenti con un impiego di risorse razionale e sostenibile. L’Agrometeorologia ha un ruolo chiave nel raggiungimento di questi ambiziosi obiettivi: non si può infatti parlare di agricoltura di precisione senza una attenta e professionale gestione delle risorse idriche e la modellistica agrometeorologica svolge un ruolo chiave anche nella difesa delle colture dagli stress di origine biotica e abiotica (malattie fungine, danni da caldo, danni da gelo ecc.). È inoltre essenziale che tutte queste applicazioni raggiungano efficacemente gli utilizzatori finali, ossia gli imprenditori agricoli, e non possono quindi esimersi da una analisi di accessibilità, fruibilità, interoperabilità e scalabilità dei protocolli e dei servizi messi a disposizione.
In questo contesto l’AIAM propone, per il 23° convegno Nazionale, l’analisi di questi temi, conducendo una disamina del ruolo attuale dell’Agrometeorologia e dell’Agricoltura 4.0 nella gestione delle risorse naturali, nella difesa delle piante e nell’implementazione di sistemi e strumenti per l’elaborazione e la divulgazione delle informazioni, al fine di creare un servizio per gli agricoltori
On-Silicon efficient integrated DRAs for millimeter-wave energy harvesting solutions
This paper presents the analysis and design of on-Silicon dielectric resonator antennas (DRAs) for energy harvesting applications. The proposed antennas, operating at 24 GHz and excited through a simple microstrip line, are built on a high-resistivity silicon substrate 0.525 mm-thick. The design of cylindrical and rectangular resonators using sapphire as dielectric material is first described, leading to 80% of maximum radiation efficiency and gain equal to 5.15 dBi. Given the increasing attention to system-on-a-chip (SoC) circuits, the second study proposed in this paper aims to a complete integrated solution, describing all-Silicon DRAs, both in cylindrical and rectangular shapes. Very promising performances are obtained in this case, too, from the twofold point of view of compactness and efficiency (75% radiation efficiency and gain equal to 4.72 dBi), if compared to standard solutions on Silicon. As regards the fully-silicon solution, a first hypothesis of rectifier is presented, obtaining a 33% RF-to-dc conversion efficiency at 8 dBm with about 3V as maximum dc-output voltage. As a last step of the proposed study, an investigation on the miniaturization of DRAs operating at millimeter waves is described, exploiting high permittivity materials. MADFORWATER. WP1 Water and water-related vulnerabilities in Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia. Task1.1 Analysis of current international cooperation agreements and their implications on the water-related goals in Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia
This dataset includes a review of current international cooperation activities and international agreements in which the 3 target countries are involved in the field of water resources management at different levels: global initiatives, such as United Nations; Euro-Mediterranean, such as the Union for the Mediterranean; and agreements with neighboring African countries. It will include a review of the status of international agreed goals, in order to identify the priorities for agenda at the basis of international cooperation agreements in the field of water efficiency in Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco. In relation to the need for agreements with neighboring African countries, specific attention will be dedicated to Egypt/Sudan agreements on the Nile river, the Tunisia/Algeria agreements on the Medjerda basin and the Tunisia/Algeria and Tunisia/Libya agreements on the North-western Sahara Aquifer System. The information provided refers to the supra-national and national scale including a review of international agreements and initiatives in which the selected countries are involved. Collected information will be derived from international organizations, public sources, public reports and previous research. The dataset will be used in T1.2 for the identification of water vulnerabilities associated to lacks of international cooperation, in T5.2 and T5.3 for the identification of regulatory and economic instruments, and in T6.2 for the elaboration of policy recommendations to support the adoption of the MADFORWATER technologies and integrated water and land management strategies. Agricultural development plays an important role in the economies of the Mediterranean African Countries. Food demand is increasing in the Mediterranean African Countries and consumption patterns are changing. The countries face common challenges in their strategy to improve food security. The most significant challenges are a rapid population growth, urbanisation, dependency on rainfed agriculture with fluctuating yields, water scarcity, increased water demands, and challenges in water quality. Water scarcity has reached a critical point in the region, and the dependency on rainfall makes the Mediterranean African Countries extra vulnerable to climate changes.
The Mediterranean African Countries offers plenty of opportunities for agricultural development: Availability of arable land, a temperate Mediterranean climate with year-round production possibilities, and a growing consumer market.
A number of different efforts had been made in the past to quantify the Water Stress and Water Vulnerability in the past. Within this study, the 2016 AWDO framework had been used to allow a more consistent comparison of information both with previous and forthcoming international studies.
Water Security and Water Vulnerability are considered as interrelated terms, where the one is the inverse of the other. Water Security had however gained over the recent decades a more prominent standing in the international community or donors, scientists, and policy makers.
Depicting Water Security leads inevitably to the question, “security for whom”? The 2016 AWDO framework was developed within the Asian Water Development Outlook to offer a consistent approach for the Household Water Security, the Economic Water Security, the Urban Water Security, the Environmental Water Security and the Resilience to Water Related Disasters, referred to as the five key dimensions. By this the framework follows the classical People, Planet, and Profit paradigm as being applied in determining the sustainable development while adding a special focus on the urban situation and water risks. The full AWDO 2016 framework requires a rather large amount of data. Concentrating on the dimension of the Economic Water Security offers instead a good trade off, allowing to reduce the number of input data while at the same time providing a sufficient diversity in the consideration of other sectors.
In this view, the Economic Water Security as defined in the 2016 AWDO framework has been used to determine relevant aspects for the Water Security in Morocco, Tunisia, and Egypt. Water Stress is considered as the ratio of Total Withdrawal over Total Renewable Freshwater Resources.
A nested framework had been applied to depict first the Water Stress and other key information on the water resource availability for all river basins in Tunisia and Morocco as well as for the different irrigation areas in Egypt. The related results had been then aggregated at national scale in order to calculate the Economic Water Security Index at national scale under the use of further socio-economic statistics. This aggregation had been necessary as the requested socio-economic background information could not been provided at the scale of river basins (Morocco, Tunisia) or irrigation areas in Egypt.
In order to depict possible changes as a result of climate change and an increase in consumption, climate model ensemble runs from the CORDEX data base have been used to elaborate future aspects on the availability of water resources on the scale of catchments and in the case of Egypt on the irrigation areas instead.
The results of this analysis are suited to provide a detailed insight on spatial variations of Water Stress. There is a high variability of rainfall in the coastal areas of Morocco, distinct north south variations of water availability in Tunisia, and a comparable uniform situation in Egypt because of distributing the Nile water in irrigation channels up to the Nile river delta.
The score of the 2016 AWDO Economic Water Security is not affected by weighting factors and the results of the study allow hence a comparison amongst the countries. Additionally, the results underline possible pathways to use selected indicators of the AWDO framework as so called anchor indicators and to route relevant insights across the scales.
Future effort should be spent to investigate further the possible effects from the aggregation process and to which extend the framework is suited to reflect pilots for introducing wastewater adequately.
For determining the wastewater reuse potentials in irrigation, different maps have been elaborated for Morocco, Tunisia, and Egypt. As a result, priority areas are highlighted, where the close vicinity of wastewater production and existing of irrigated areas would favour interventions to implement wastewater reuse schemes.
The findings of this study indicate the added value of applying elements from the 2016 AWDO Framework to allow a systematic reflection and comparison of key information to characterise water stress and Water Security
