Best Practices for Integrating Climate Change Into Protected and Conserved Area Management Plans and Planning Processes in Canada
TEMPERATURE REGULATION OF PLANT- RHIZOBACTERIA INTERACTIONS WITHIN THE SOIL-RHIZOSPHERE- RHIZOPLANE INTERFACE
An optimal microbiome is important for plant health and can prime subsequent plant immune responses to enhance stress resilience. However, the molecular mechanisms that dynamically drive host-microbiome interactions and subsequent induced systemic resistance (ISR) responses in plants under elevated environmental temperatures remain underexplored. To address this major knowledge gap, this thesis further investigated Canadian soil-inhabiting rhizobacteria that had been previously shown to activate ISR in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) plants. Specifically, this study characterized the in vitro physiology of these rhizobacterial strains under different temperatures, including growth, phosphate solubilization abilities and direct anti- pathogenic capabilities. Temperature-sensitivity of these parameters were largely species- dependent, with an observed distinction between Bacillus and Pseudomonas proliferation in various rhizosphere fractions. In situ, bacterial proliferation of a Gram-positive Bacillus velezensis strain and Gram-negative Pseudomonas defensor WCS374 was monitored in the rhizosphere and on the rhizoplane of tomato plants at two temperatures. It was determined that the rhizobacterial competency and the host plant’s epiphytic recruitment of microbes were species-dependent, and not significantly influenced by the temperature changes within the experimental parameters. Finally, gene expression analyses by RT-qPCR revealed that Bacillus and Pseudomonas did not significantly influence the expression of defence hormone-related gene expression in the tomato phyllosphere (i.e., aboveground parts of the plant). Overall, this thesis demonstrates the effect of temperature on plant interactions with, and responses to, rhizosphere microbiota. This research lays the foundation for future investigations of these experimental ISR- inducing rhizobacterial strains and is vital to potentially advance the development of microbiome-based technologies facing global warming
Multispecies Partnership: An Analysis of Human-Animal Relationships within Equine-Assisted Therapy Programs
This research examines and discusses multi-species relationships between humans and non-humans, specific to Equine Assisted Therapy facilities. Anthropocentric views are common within human-animal relationships, due to colonial and Eurocentric hierarchical perspectives. Through the identification of contributions made by both humans and non-humans commensal and mutualistic relationships can be achieved. Within Equine Assisted Therapy facilities there are unique interaction points between volunteers and therapy horses. As such, this project considers to what extent volunteers are trained to understand common equine behaviour and communication cues. In developing a volunteer training resource, interactions that consider the well-being of both human and non-human partners are facilitated

Contrasting seasonal cycling of arsenic in a series of subarctic shield lakes with different morphometric properties
The subarctic shield near Yellowknife, Northwest Territories (NWT), is populated with thousands of small lakes (\u3c1.5 km2) and several large lakes. Historic mining activities in the region have left a legacy of environmental impacts and widespread arsenic (As) contamination in both aquatic and terrestrial environments. In particular, several small subarctic lakes near Yellowknife have been previously documented to be contaminated with high levels of As. Subarctic lakes are characterized by seasonal ice-cover that can persist for more than half of the year, yet little is known about the under-ice spatial and seasonal dynamics of As cycling. The objective of this study is to contrast seasonal changes in As cycling within and among a series of lakes with different basin morphologies during ice-cover and into the ice-free seasons. In this study, a combination of data including water profile sampling, sediment cores, snow and ice measurements, and bathymetric mapping were collected in four lakes from November 2020 to October 2021. Continuous monitoring of lake physical properties (dissolved oxygen, temperature, and light) was conducted via data loggers installed at 1 m depth intervals in each lakes’ water column. Detailed profiles of water chemistry were collected monthly at the deepest part of each lake, examining numerous key water chemistry elements with a focus on dissolved and particulate As concentrations. Key results from this study indicated: 1) Distinct seasonal variation in As over the ice-on and open-water periods, 2) The important role of lake mixing regimes in the mobility of As, 3) Field evidence of Fe attenuation of As from the water column. This project contributes important information on the winter cycling of As, which will help to inform our understanding of the chemical recovery of subarctic lakes from As pollution
“When Wartime Friends Meet”: Great War Veteran Culture and the (Ab)Use of Alcohol
After the First World War, Canadian veterans created a culture that celebrated the camaraderie, sense of purpose, and light-hearted moments of their experience as soldiers. Much like the trench culture of the war years, it poked fun at misfortune, satirized the enemy, and presumed that a stiff drink could make any situation better. Veteran culture provided ex-soldiers in the 1920s and 1930s with the mutual support they needed to get through difficult times, but it was a milieu in which the excessive consumption of alcohol was accepted and even encouraged. This had little impact on the settled, well-adjusted veteran but for the ex-soldier who was struggling in the postwar world, it could be a recipe for disaster
A Generation Curtailed: The Lifespans of Canada’s Pensioned Veterans of the Great War
Despite long-time interest in links between the Great War and concepts of a Lost Generation, there have been few efforts to study veteran lifespans. The death dates of Canadian pensioned veterans recorded in the Department of Veterans Affairs pensions files, combined with those recorded in department’s death cards, offers an opportunity to quantify not just veteran life expectancy, but actual lifespans. The ensuing analysis of pensioned veteran lifespans suggests that research conducted in the mid 1930s by F. S. Burke for the Department of Veterans Affairs, which concluded that pensioned veteran life expectancy would exceed that of the average Canadian male, was incorrect. Instead of living longer than the average Canadian male, based on the Pension Sample compiled for this study, it appears that the number of pensioners who died young after the war is almost as high as the number of soldiers killed during the conflict
Je ne me souviens pas: Pensioned Veterans from French Canada’s 22nd Battalion
An examination of the pension files of men having served in the 22nd Battalion (canadien-français), the Canadian Corps’ only French-speaking line battalion, situates veterans into a specific ethno-linguistic and, more generally, socio-economic context. This article seeks to illuminate some of the many personal crises that could, and commonly did, afflict veterans, their families and their survivors. It demonstrates that beyond the devastation of serious physical or psychological wounding, many of Canada’s returned men, perhaps far more than we imagined, suffered persistent ill health, financial distress and family estrangement. Almost without exception, the sixty 22nd Battalion case files examined for this article revealed wounded or ill veterans’ poverty, despair, and their struggle to survive from month to month.
This review offers a detailed and representative cross-section of the postwar lives and pension experiences of veterans having served together and who frequently came from the same cities or regions. While no two battalions shared identical compositions and war experiences, there were broad commonalities between many of them having seen front-line service for about the same period. The findings from the 22nd Battalion veterans’ files likely would be similar to the experiences of men from many other battalions, and to those of their survivors
