    Exploring the Olmsted Legacy in Washington

    The City Beautiful movements’ architects intentions were to create spaces where nature and humans could coexist. Before the movement, cities were not planned but were an outgrowth of the industrial capitalist process. The City Beautiful movement was the first attempt to bring nature into the urban landscape. The parks that the Olmsted firm were designing simultaneously showcased the most beautiful parts of the city and added to the beauty as well. Olmsted liked to create an entire city plan within a park. No matter what shape parks in Seattle take, they still represent the Olmsted legacy. They represent the legacy physically, in the way that they are centered around features that show off the beautiful and unique aspects of the city. They have native plant species and represent the flow of the natural landscape through paths that follow it. More than physically, parks practice the ideology of the Olmsted legacy. There are many different types of people interacting with the space in a number of different ways. Especially after the pandemic, it shows how resilient these spaces are. No matter what is occuring in city centers, individuals crave green spaces and the type of comradery that they bring

    Public Access Screenings: An Ontological Inquiry into Cinematic Street Art

    Street art is a blossoming field of aesthetics, but aestheticians have yet to elucidate a theory of the relationship between street art and film. Film and street art seem intuitively antithetical. Street art is a static art form that interacts with the physical space it inhabits, while film moves and requires projection onto a surface. These intuitions, however prevalent in society, neglect the burgeoning styles of avant-garde film and street art that subvert tropes of both artforms. I assert that film-as-street-art, or cinematic street art, is feasible practice, both philosophically and practically. I discuss the extant ontologies of street art and endorse Bacharach’s theory of aconsensuality, which emphasizes the importance of avoiding seeking permission when creating street art. Subsequently, I discuss two ontologies of film: Walton’s transparency thesis and Carroll’s ontology of film, and argue in favor of Carroll. Utilizing the frameworks of Bacharach and Carroll, my research dissects two examples of potential examples of cinematic street art, the practice of video painting and the short film MUTO, which I argue cannot be defined as cinematic street art. Second, I suggest types of cinematic street art and provide a theory for cinematic street art as a practice. The distinct practice of cinematic street art requires that an artwork be placed aconsensually, make the street essential to the function of the artwork, and retain the qualities of a film that Carroll lays out

    Synthesizing Bismuth Nanoparticles

    Gold nanoparticles (AuNP) have become the face of modern medicine, with promising future applications as dual-purpose diagnostic and radiation therapy (theragnostic) agents. Contrarily, bismuth nanoparticles (BiNPs) have been proposed as a cost-efficient, biodegradable alternative to AuNPs. However, BiNP research is in its infancy. This proposal aims to develop methods for the size, shape-controlled, and neutral and positively charged synthesis of BiNPs with amphiphilic ligands. Overall, this project is to provide fundamental research into BiNP synthesis with therapeutically valuable ligands and to eventually see how BiNPs interact with biomolecules, as none have been studied with proteins

    Engineering an IEC Fusion Device

    Nuclear fusion occurs when two atomic nuclei hit each other with enough energy that they combine. To overcome the repellent force atomic nuclei, have on each other inertial electrostatic confinement (IEC) fusion devices accelerate ionized gas particles towards the center of a fusion chamber by producing a strong electric field (E-field). The E-field is created by supplying a strong negative charge to a spherical grid-like cathode in the center of the reaction chamber. This field accelerate the positively charged nuclei towards the center, where the atoms can speed past the large gaps in the cathode grid and collide with each other to create fusion. Our goal is to produce a safe IEC reactor with the capability of maintaining deuterium fusion (deuterium being an isotope of hydrogen with a proton and neutron within its nucleus). This summer we were able to connect our IEC reactor with Daq-factory and Lab-jack allowing for the capability to control the reactor with a computer. Additionally lead and water shielding were added to the outside of the IEC reactor to provide sufficient radiation shielding

    Black Carbon on Mount Rainier

    Mount Rainier’s snowpack is an essential aspect of Washington State’s ecosystem as it is a critical source of fresh water for over five major river systems. The purpose of this study is to analyze how climate change is affecting the snow’s melt rate, which in turn has a major effect on the state as a whole. Anthropogenic activities, like the burning of fossil fuels, result in the accumulation of black carbon (BC) in snow, expediting its melting process. This research will determine the concentration of BC equivalent in Rainier’s snowpack using the Light Absorbing Heating Method (LAHM) and various coding software

    Black carbon impacts the albedo of snow by absorbing a higher proportion of solar radiation leading to higher melt rates in snow and the development of a water resource shortage during summer months in the PNW. For this reason, the measurement of black carbon in the Cascades of Washington is an important, but under-measured property. Through sampling on Mount Rainier and analysis using the LAHM instrument, the concentration of black carbon was measured on 13 different occasions at five separate locations on Mount Rainier. After analysis the BC concentrations were overlaid with forest fire smoke trajectories to determine increased snow exposure to smoke vastly increases BC concentrations

    Investigating the Feasability of a Sum Frequency/Second Harmonic Generation Experiment to Examine the Behavior of RNA on Ice

    RNA world hypothesis proposes that life began with RNA instead of DNA. However, RNA hydrolyzes faster than it can reproduce in room temperature water. It has been found that RNA will not hydrolyze in super cooled water; this has led to the new hypothesis that RNA began life on the surface of ice. Spartan, molecular modeling software, and Gromacs, molecular dynamic simulations, were used to investigate whether or not RNA on ice could be studied with Sum Frequency Generation or Second Harmonic Generation (SFG and SHG). Both are surface sensitive spectroscopic techniques that would help investigate the orientation of RNA on ice. Using Spartan it was discovered that SHG is not a viable method to study RNA unless we attach a chromophore to the RNA. It was found that SFG is a viable method and the amines on the top of the bases will be deuterated and tracked on a vibrational spectrum. Future work will be done simulating vibrational spectra using Gromacs, preparing a procedure for cryo-SFG, and studying the rate that deuterated amines will exchange with surrounding water

    Language and Legislation: How Radical Feminists of the 1970’s Have Impacted the Sociopolitical Climate of the 21st Century

    Understanding how radical feminism came to exist is critical in understanding how trans-exclusion has been expedited and expanded. Radical feminism establishes an anatomical and political position of power in maleness, which reiterates a binary perspective, therefore having the proclivity to enable trans-exclusivity. Radical feminists developed a politics surrounding binary divisions of anatomy that established a platform for trans exclusionary ideology to blossom. Trans exclusionary radical feminists are creating coalitions of trans exclusive ideologues that collaborate with conservative politicians to restrict the expansion of gender inclusive spaces and subsequently limit gender variability. The Mississippi Fairness Act of 2021 is an apt example of how Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminists promote their ideologies through political forces. Radical feminism, though purported to have been an attempt to move away from biological deterministic attitudes, refortifies the gender binary in a way that allows trans-exclusion to become a part of the ideology. This paper investigates the ideological connection between radical feminism and trans exclusionary politics by analyzing radical feminist writings from the 1970s in concert with modern legislation. I argue that radical feminism established a biological deterministic framework upon which trans-exclusionary politics could be built off of by reifying the gender binary through static anatomical terms
