Analyzing Opioid Use and Disposal in Washington State Through Wastewater-Based-Epidemology
In 2018, Washington passed the first state-wide drug Take-Back program, its goal was to give residents a safer way to dispose of their unwanted prescription drugs and protect the environment. This study proposes to use Wastewater-Based-Epidemiology (WBE) to measure the effectiveness of this program. Hydrocodone is a common compound found in painkillers and will be used as the model drug to evaluate the effectiveness of the Take-Back program. Hydrocodone and its metabolite, nor-hydrocodone, will be quantified in wastewater and trends in the ratio of these two compounds will potentially be an effective indicator of success of the program

Improving Recidivism and Outcomes Within Inpatient Psychiatric Hospitals
In collaboration with a local occupational therapist in the adult inpatient acute mental health unit at a small urban hospital in Western Washington, we conducted a systematic literature review to determine which strategies are most effective in reducing readmission to inpatient adult psychiatric facilities for individuals experiencing homelessness and/or substance abuse. Overall results found housing assistance, 24/7 resource access, interdisciplinary teams, and holistic individualized care to be effective in the reduction of recidivism for individuals experiencing homelessness and/or substance abuse. Interventions focused on money management, diagnosis education, and community reintegration were also supported. Evidence indicated systemic social and legislative reform, facility level changes in staffing patterns and culture, and the use of evidence-based interventions at the practitioner level all reduce readmission rates to mental health facilities.
In order to support our collaborator, we created four group interventions which were then implemented at her facility. These interventions focused on money management, accessing community resources, understanding mental health diagnoses, and understanding substance abuse. Practitioners at the facility identified these subjects as very important and that their knowledge of the topics and comfortability leading the sessions increased over time. Participants reported that they learned skills during the sessions and were confident they could apply them to their lives. We recommend that occupational therapists advocate for long-term systematic changes and take immediate action by implementing evidence based, client-centered interventions
Addressing Attention Difficulties in School-Aged Children Through Interventions Targeting On-Task Behavior and School Performance
Tomi Johnson, OTR/L, the primary collaborator for this project, is an occupational therapist with the Kent School District (KSD) working with children in grades K-6. She worked with occupational therapy (OT) students to answer the question: Which school-based related service interventions are effective in improving school performance in children with attention challenges. The results of this systematic review identified six intervention modalities that can be implemented by occupational therapists to address attention challenges in school-aged children including: (1) self-monitoring, (2) school-to-home daily report cards, (3) physical activity, (4) sensory supports, (5) high tech, and (6) metacognitive and behavioral training. Based on implementability by school-based occupational therapists, interventions related to self-monitoring, school-to-home daily reports, and physical activity, were the most highly recommended by the researchers
Knowledge translation for this project consisted of reviewing interventions found in the systematic review and composing a booklet explaining the six intervention categories and organizing each intervention from most helpful to not helpful. A post-survey to determine the perceived usefulness of the booklet by KSD occupational therapists was administered and six were returned. Based on the information provided, KSD occupational therapists indicated that on average, they are most likely to use school-to-home and physical activity interventions, and less likely to use sensory approaches. Respondents strongly agreed that the booklet was easy to understand and would help clients in class and therapy. Some indicated that “more information on specific interventions,” as well as clearer pictures and titles would be helpful. Future research could focus on one of the intervention modalities to establish a replicable and effective intervention protocol

Petrology and Tectonic Setting of the Silver Pass Volcanics, Central Cascades, WA: Early Evidence of Farallon Slab Breakoff
In the Pacific Northwest, the middle Eocene (52-45 Ma) was characterized by widespread igneous activity related to the accretion of Siletzia and subsequent rollback and breakoff of the Farallon slab. This breakoff is record by a NNW trending belt of 51.6 – 48.1 Ma volcanic and plutonic rocks that extends for \u3e150 km in western Washington (Kant et al., 2018). The Silver Pass Volcanics (SPV) are some of the oldest rocks in this belt. Goals of this study are to: (1) characterize the petrology and geochemistry of the SPV, (2) compare the SPV with the adjacent and similarly-aged Taneum Formation (TF), and (3) use these data to gain insight into the early stages of slab breakoff. The SPV (51.3 Ma; Eddy et al., 2016) consist of ~3600 feet of subaerial lavas and tuffs now folded into a syncline (Lofgren, 1973). They include tholeiitic basaltic andesites and andesites (SiO2 = 52.8-63.7 wt.%, La/Yb = 2.3–7.4) and calc-alkaline basaltic andesites through rhyolites (SiO2 = 54.0-71.0, La/Yb = 4.4-7.2). Tholeiitic rocks occur mainly low in the section but some are interbedded with calc-alkaline rocks higher up. It has been suggested the SPV are correlative with the TF and the units are geochemically similar, but the SPV are on average more iron-rich (avg. Fe2O3 = 7.8 vs. 5.9 wt.%), have a weaker arc signature (avg Ba/Nb = 62 vs. 96), and lack adakites. Both the SPV and TF differ from other units in the breakoff belt in that they are not bimodal. The diversity of magma compositions present in the SPV and TF likely reflect both spatial and temporal changes during slab rupture. We suggest the early tholeiitic rocks formed when hot mantle rose through the tear in the slab and underwent decompression melting, whereas the calc-alkaline rocks originated within a mantle wedge affected by earlier subduction. TF adakites may represent melting at the edges of the slab tear

This project aims to investigate the role of an enzyme called MMP2 in skeletal muscle hypertrophy after functional overload of the plantaris muscle in wild-type and MMP2 knockout mice. Specifically, we examined the expression of muscle differentiation markers MyoD and myogenin using Quantitative Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (qRT-PCR) in the functionally overloaded plantaris muscle from wild type (WT) and MMP-2 knockout (KO) mice. We hypothesized that the decreased hypertrophic response to FO in MMP-2 KO mice is due to impaired ECM remodeling and impairment of protein synthesis pathways
