Physiological and morphological differences between novel protist pathogens of the seagrasses Zostera marina and Zostera japonica
Seagrasses are important foundational species in shallow nearshore areas, and are globally in decline primarily due to climate change and pathogens. Two species of seagrasses are found in the Puget Sound, native Zostera marina, and introduced Z. japonica, and they are very different biologically and occupy different niches We hypothesized that the protist pathogens would be most successful under different environmental conditions due to the difference in habitat for the two host plant species, considering that they reside at different tidal heights. We collected two species of seagrasses at three different collection sites (Dash Point State Park, Lost Lake Park, Chambers Bay). The temperature and salinity were also recorded at varying tidal heights. Zoospore release patterns differed between Zostera marina and Z. japonica treatments at different temperatures and salinities
Geochemistry of Eocene to Miocene Rocks in a Rear-Arc Setting, Central Cascades, Washington
Lavas and shallow intrusions near Wenatchee, WA, provide a unique opportunity to study a diverse array of samples that erupted over a 30+ Ma interval in the Cascadia rear arc. Included are two Eocene units, the Wenatchee Pinnacles and Sugarloaf Peak, two Miocene units, Eagle Rock and Burch Mountain, and an undated andesite at Peoh Point. Goals of this study are to use trace and major element data to determine the tectonic setting and petrogenesis of these rocks and identify any compositional differences between there rear-arc sites and the Cascade arc as a whole
Quantification of Skeletal Muscle Synthesis Pathway Proteins in Wild Type and MMP-2 Knockout Mice After Functional Overload of the Plantaris Muscle
Skeletal muscle is the most abundant muscle in the human body. It is highly plastic, which allows the muscle to adapt to changing functional needs including exercise and injury. Previous studies have highlighted the role of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in skeletal muscle plasticity. The ECM is primarily composed of proteoglycans and collagens and can regenerate in response to injury, exercise, or disease. This regeneration of the ECM is partially facilitated by matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), enzymes responsible for degrading extracellular proteins. The disruption of ECM synthesis and MMP activity has been shown to affect skeletal muscle regeneration. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of MMP-2 knockout (KO) on protein synthesis pathway in a functional overload (FO) model. (Re)imagining a Dialogic Curriculum: Humanizing and Epistemically Liberating Pedagogies
This paper is a call to university leaders across the United Kingdom to stand in solidarity with racialized and racially minoritized students by embracing humanizing and epistemically liberating practices that open up possibilities for authentic dialogue and action. This dialogue should seek to resist the barriers which have resulted in the marginalization, and often systemic discrimination of racially minoritized students within higher education. We seek to illuminate the revolutionary leadership of university students, who have initiated the movement toward racial representation, multiple truths, and a more equitable curriculum that subverts the violence of Western cognitive imperialism. Black feminist thought informs our standpoint in this paper and we reflect upon our experience of the Childhood studies curriculum as both students and staff. We offer recommendations for university leaders to stimulate meaningful, equitable, and socially just change

Pop Rocks and Persistence: Finding the Women in U.S. Foreign Policy and National Security
One hundred years after the ratification of the 19th amendment, women in the United States continue to face societal and institutionalized biases that can undermine the success of women everywhere. This is especially true when it comes to leadership in the U.S. government. And while the number of women serving in state and federal legislatures has increased, the number of women leaders in the foreign policy and national security establishment continues to be lacking. As I progressed in my International Relations degree, it became apparent that I was most frequently learning about men, from men, and then I asked: where are the women in U.S. foreign policy and national security (FP/NS)? Over the last three months, I have interviewed fifteen women from various FP/NS backgrounds and degrees of experience to understand their time in the field and how their identities as women impacted their work. The decades-old networks of aging, white men who have held, and continue to hold, the majority of positions across the foreign policy establishment and have created a culture where women must work harder than the men around them in order to advance. In addition, almost all reported casual sexism and discrimination in the workplace. But, small steps have brought greater numbers of women into the field. While support from career service members and both male and female mentors have helped increase the numbers of women in FP/NS, the fraternal cultures of the institutions women serve has prevented the diversity the establishment needs so the decision-makers are more informed and better represent the country they serve
The Influence of Dog-Directed Speech on Quantity Discrimination in Domestic Dogs (Canis familiaris)
As a result of domestication, dogs are genetically predisposed to be more attentive to human social cues. This study investigates the influence of dog-directed speech (DDS) from humans on the basic quantity discrimination abilities of dogs in a food choice task. Forty two pet dogs were tested in four different conditions. Two plates with varying amounts of food were presented to the subject, ‘choosing’ a plate by eating from it. Experimental conditions sought to seek the influence of DDS from humans on dog decision-making in addition to measuring the influence of DDS and quantity discrimination alone
RNA’s Thermodynamically Favored Position on Ice
Previous molecular dynamics (MD) work simulated an 8-nucleotide RNA strand on ice, speculatively concluding RNA is stabilized by hydrogen-bonding with the ice’s crystal lattice. That conclusion is investigated by studying a simpler RNA dinucleotide, simulated using GROMACS MD computer simulations. Umbrella sampling results indicate that the most thermodynamically stable position for the RNA to bond is to the uppermost layer of the ice crystal’s basal plane
