Prescribed Moroccan Authenticity And The Quest For ‘Real’ Food

    Get PDF
Moroccan foodways provide a view into the ways that food and identity interact, showcasing the agency over one\u27s cultural identity, or lack there of, for the people who make it. Understandings of self are inherently impacted by projected notions of cultural identity placed upon communities. Authenticity discourse subjects understandings of cultures to the liminal space between barbarism and modernity. Through colonial ideas of linear time, these notions freeze cultures in time, forcing ideas of stagnant identity on a peoples

Child Development & Covid-19: How Different Modes of Interpersonal Communication Impact Social Skills in Early Elementary School Students

    Get PDF
Due to Covid-19, many American schools ceased in-person instruction during the 2020/21 school year. These closures have severely impacted young children’s academic and social development. This study focuses on the influence of school closures on social development, specifically the difference in the effect of online and in-person interactions. Thirty-nine parents of first and second graders responded to a survey about their family’s experience during the 2020/21 school year. Questions focused on how 4 factors (mode of instruction, social interactions, support systems, and time for activities) impacted a child’s 3 primary social skills (play, emotion regulation, and communication). Results concluded that the mode of instruction had no impact on social skills scores. In-person interactions were associated with higher play scores. Implications of differences in social interactions are discussed

Boric acid and certain additives were used to improve the direct amidation of a carboxylic acid and an amine. the purpose of this work is to replace the traditional method of amidation that uses halogenated reagents

Using Boric Acid and Additives to Catalyze Direct Amidation Reactions

    Get PDF
Green chemistry principles were used to research a catalytic system that may be effective for amidation, a popular bond-forming reaction used in the pharmaceutical industry. A benchmark reaction was used to test various additives on the boric-acid-based catalytic system developed previously in the Boisvert lab. The optimized catalytic system was then tested on various sets of substrates and on larger scale

Effects of Treadmill Interventions on Infants with Developmental Delays Presenting with Mild and Severe Impairments: A Case Series

    Get PDF
Background: Physical development delays can severely limit a child’s ability to explore and learn about their environment. Evidence supports that this exploration promotes a child’s development in cognition, language acquisition, social skills, and further physical skills. Thus, interventions that target and improve early mobility can be highly valuable to a child’s life. Treadmill training in infants with developmental delays has shown to be an effective intervention in moving infants toward earlier independent walking and improved gross motor function. Purpose: This study aims to explore the potential benefits of an established treadmill training program in infants with varying degrees of motor impairments. Materials/Methods: Two infants with motor delays from early intervention agencies were recruited for this study. The eligible participants engaged in a 12-week treadmill program, walking twice a week for 20 minutes with trunk support provided by a caregiver. Outcome measures of GMFM raw scores and video recordings were collected. Results: Both individuals, regardless of the severity of impairments, increased GMFM scores in the dimensions of standing and walking. Both infants’ total steps, steps per minute, and steps per bout improved by midterm. Stepping metrics decreased for the infant with minor impairments by post-test while stepping metrics continued to improve for the infant with more severe impairments. Conclusions: Treadmill training was an effective intervention for improving gross motor function and walking ability in both infants. With minor impairments from developmental delays, infants may stop finding treadmill activity engaging enough for participation once they gain mastery over the skill

Motivational Characteristics and Fulfillment of Psychological Needs Among Physically Active Undergraduate Students

    Get PDF
Background: Physical activity (PA) guidelines describe positive correlations between PA and health outcomes. Self-determination theory (SDT) was used to identify motivational factors crucial to a physically active lifestyle.Purpose: Identify and analyze how motivational characteristics, fulfillment of psychological needs, and individual experiences/beliefs influence PA.Methods: Participants defined as moderately to vigorously physically active by the International Physical Activity Questionnaire were recruited using nominated sampling and public advertising. Motivational characteristics and psychological needs were assessed using SDT, Motives for Physical Activities Measure – Revised (MPAM-R), and The Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction and Frustration Scale – General (BPNSF). Semi-structured interviews were recorded and transcribed for investigators to independently code operationally defined thematic statements and then jointly discuss consensus for final codes. Results: Qualitative analysis showed participants expressed higher life satisfaction (41) than frustration (19). Frequency of statements that expressed motivation included: competence (60), relatedness (35), autonomy (34), interest/enjoyment (34), fitness (12), and appearance (8). The MPAM-R survey revealed interest/enjoyment = 6.2, competence = 6.0, fitness = 6.0, appearance = 5.1, social = 3.9. The BPNSF survey revealed satisfaction was significantly greater than frustration with a large effect size for each psychological need (Autonomy n = 20, p = .05, z = -3.89, r = .87; Competence n = 20, p = .05, z = -4.0, r = .89; Relatedness n = 20, p = .05, z = -3.90, r = .87).Conclusion: Physically active undergraduate students showed greater satisfaction than frustration. Students also shared common beliefs such as a desire for lifelong PA. Motivation stemmed highest from competence, followed by relatedness, interest, and autonomy

Self-Feeding Interventions for Adults with Tremors

    Get PDF
This research analysis was completed in collaboration with Carol Schramek, OTR/L, who works at a skilled nursing facility (SNF) in Iowa run by ABCM corporations. A systematic review of literature was conducted to explore the research question: What evidence-based interventions have been shown to be effective for reducing tremors, improving occupational performance, and/or increasing client satisfaction during self-feeding in adults with resting and/or action tremors? After initial review of 73 articles based on title, 33 articles met our inclusion criteria and were included in our critical appraisal of our topic (CAT). We found there to be a lack of research specifically on self-feeding interventions for adults with an upper-extremity tremor. Due to this gap in research, inferences on the effectiveness of the non-functional interventions for occupation-based tasks in our critical appraisal for self-feeding were made. After reviewing the 33 articles, 8 intervention categories prevailed that had positive impacts on occupational performance for clients with tremor including: limb temperature, positioning of the upper extremity, electrical stimulation, vibration, orthoses, muscular therapy, behavioral training, and various eating devices. After meeting with our collaborator to discuss options for disseminating our findings from the CAT analysis, it was determined that a digital booklet containing basic information ( description, methods, cost, photos) on each intervention category would be most useful for Schramek and her occupational therapy (OT) practitioner colleagues to use when learning about and selecting interventions to use. The booklet was created and sent via email in a pdf and Microsoft Word document to reference and print at her convenience. The purpose of providing a Microsoft Word version, was to enable editing of the files for client-centered customization. To measure the efficacy and benefits of the booklet for the OT practitioners, pre and post surveys were created to assess the OT practitioners\u27 current usage, knowledge, and familiarity of self-feeding interventions for adults with tremor before and after reading through our booklet. Results from our surveys and collaborator feedback indicated that the booklet provided useful information for practitioners to utilize and increased their knowledge on options for interventions to address self-feeding in adults with tremor. OT practitioners should consider all supports and barriers the client has for self-feeding when determining if an intervention included in this critical appraisal is appropriate for their clients with tremor. More research is needed to determine if these interventions are appropriate for OT practitioners to implement for clients with tremors
