SRAM optimized porting and execution of machine learning classifiers on MCU-based IoT devices: Demo abstract
With the introduction of edge analytics, IoT devices are becoming smarter and ready for AI applications. However, any increase in the training data results in a linear increase in the space complexity of the trained Machine Learning (ML) models, which means they cannot be deployed on IoT devices that have limited memory. To alleviate such memory issues, we recently proposed an SRAM-optimized classifier porting, stitching, and efficient deployment method in [3]. This is currently the most resource-friendly approach that enables large classifiers to be comfortably executed on microcontroller unit (MCU) based IoT devices, and perform ultra-fast classifications (1--4x times faster than state-of-the-art libraries) while consuming 0 bytes of SRAM.
In this demo, realizing our recent SRAM-optimized approach, we port and execute 7 dataset-trained classifiers on 7 popular MCUs, and report their inference performance. It is apparent from the demo results that realizing our approach makes even the slowest Atmega328P MCU perform faster unit inference than a NVIDIA Jetson Nano GPU and Raspberry Pi 4 CPU.This publication has emanated from research supported in part by a research grant from Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) under Grant Number

Porting and execution of anomalies detection models on embedded systems in IoT: Demo abstract
In the Industry 4.0 era, Microcontrollers (MCUs) based tiny embedded sensor systems have become the sensing paradigm to interact with the physical world. In 2020, 25.6 billion MCUs were
shipped, and over 250 billion MCUs are already operating in the
wild. Such low-power, low-cost MCUs are being used as the brain to
control diverse applications and soon will become the global digital
nervous system. In an Industrial IoT setup, such tiny MCU-based
embedded systems are equipped with anomaly detection models
and mounted on production plant machines for monitoring the
machine’s health/condition. These models process the machine’s
health data (from temperature, RPM, vibration sensors) and raise
timely alerts when it predicts/detects data patterns that show deviations from the normal operation state.
In this demo, we train One Class Support Vector Machines (OCSVM) based anomaly detection models and port the trained models
to their MCU executable versions. We then deploy and execute
the ported models on 4 popular MCUs and report their on-board
inference performance along with their memory (Flash and SRAM)
consumption. The steps/procedure that we show in the demo is
generic, and the viewers can use it to efficiently port a wide variety of datasets-trained classifiers and execute them on different

A hermeneutical reading of The Universe Story towards the configuration of the human in the text
This thesis undertakes a hermeneutical reading of The Universe Story through the lens of Paul Ricoeur s narrative hermeneutics, while drawing too on environmental hermeneutics, to determine the configuration of the human in the text.
Ricoeur argues that narrative plays a primary role in the manner in which a subject comes to self-understanding. He viewed the hermeneutical task as being to assist human understanding through an investigation of what happened in the text so that a life may be refigured, and his narrative hermeneutics offers a model by which to undertake a critical textual analysis. In this model prefiguration begins the explanation of the narrative and relates to the pre-history of the story told. This incorporates an analysis of the traditions, histories and thinkers who influenced the narrative, both explicitly and implicitly. Configuration refers to the arrangement of events in the narrative and involves an exploration of language, structure and style and how these contribute to the meaning of the narrative. The third, re-figuration , is the self-understanding that can come when the world of the reader fuses in imagination with the world of the text , but that is always guided by the text itself.
Since its publication in 1992 The Universe Story has generated a large body of secondary work in literature, music and the arts. Despite this it has been very little analysed and the world that it proposes, in addition to who the human is in this world, remains unexplored. This study focuses specifically on the human of the text. It explores the way in which the narrative is both prefigured and configured, and the meanings associated with the human released by this configuration. The narrative discloses the human as located within a time-developmental universe both utterly dependent on and shaped by Earth and cosmological processes while simultaneously responsible for the inauguration of an ecological era
Consequences, schmonsequences! Considering the future as part of publication and peer review in computing research
Research in computing is becoming increasingly concerned with understanding and mitigating unintended consequences of technology developments. However, those concerns are rarely reflected in how we submit, review, and publish our own work. Specifically, in talking about how our new apps, devices, and algorithms will change the world, we focus almost exclusively on positive consequences. There have been calls to require some speculation about negative impacts as part of the peer review process. This workshop will explore how to think about and report potential negative consequences in our papers in a way thatâ s practical, inclusive, and achievable. The aim is to draw on scholarship around creative-yet-grounded speculation about technology futures and to consider how these might be applied to publication and peer review. The workshop aims to inspire the CHI conference and the computing research community to meaningfully consider and act upon the potential negative implications of their work
Homotopical and effective methods for associative algebras
This thesis contains four main chapters based on four different papers. In the third chapter, we solve the problem of computing the minimal model of an arbitrary associative monomial algebra. Our methods are combinatorial and depend on a detailed analysis of a homotopy retract datum on the bar resolution of the trivial module obtained from the algebraic discrete Morse theory of Jöllenbeck Welker. In it, we also explain how the bimodule resolution of Bardzell can be obtained as a by-product of our resolution through a twisting cochain argument, and give some interesting examples of vanishing and non-vanishing patterns for higher multiplications of homotopy associative algebras.
The fourth chapter centers on a homotopically invariant effective computation of the Tamarkin Tsygan calculus of an associative algebra: we construct out of each cofibrant resolution of an associative algebra a pair of complexes and show they are ∞-quasi-isomorphic to the standard pair of Hochschild complexes defining the calculus structure on this algebra, and give computational examples at the end of the chapter. At the same time, we prove that the coloured operad defining Tamarkin Tsygan calculi is inhomogenous Koszul, which is essential for our proof to go through.
The fifth chapter is based on joint work with Vladimir Dotsenko and Vincent Gélinas. In it, we construct, through the use of Anick chains and perfect paths in a Gorenstein monomial algebra Λ, a monogenic polynomial subalgebra k[x] of the A∞-centre of the Yoneda algebra Ext_Λ(k;k) exhibiting this higher centre and the Yoneda algebra itself as module finite over k[x], ultimately showing that Λ satisfies the FG conditions of Snashall Solberg through the methods of Briggs and Gélinas.
The sixth and last chapter, based on joint work with Vladimir Dotsenko, presents a new way to interpret and prove the celebrated Diamond Lemma of Bergman from the viewpoint of homotopical algebra, while at the same time providing a general framework to state and prove the respective result for other algebraic structures. Our main result states that every multiplicative free resolution of an algebra with monomial relations gives rise to its own Diamond Lemma, so that Bergman s condition of "resolvable ambiguities" becomes the first non-trivial component of the Maurer Cartan equation in the corresponding tangent complex
Is there a new climate politics? Emergency, Engagement and Justice,
Addressing climate change globally requires significant transformations of production and consumption systems. The language around climate action has shifted tangibly over the last five years to reflect this. Indeed, thousands of local governments, national governments, universities and scientists have declared a climate emergency. Some commentators argue that the emergency framing conveys a new and more appropriate level of urgency needed to respond to climate challenges; to create a social tipping point in the fight against climate change. Others are concerned to move on from such emergency rhetoric to urgent action. Beyond emergency declarations, new spaces of, and places for, engagement with climate change are emerging. The public square, the exhibition hall, the law courts, and the investors’ forum are just some of the arenas where climate change politics are now being negotiated. Emergent governing mechanisms are being utilised, from citizens’ assemblies to ecocide lawsuits. New social movements from Extinction Rebellion to Fridays For Future demonstrate heightened concern and willingness to undertake civil disobedience and protest against climate inaction. Yet questions remain which are addressed in this thematic issue: Are these discourses and spaces of engagement manifestations of a radical new climate politics? And if these are new climate politics, do they mark a shift of gear in current discourses with the potential to effect transformative climate action and support a just transition to a decarbonised world
The Creation and Diffusion of Knowledge - an Agent Based Modelling Approach
In this paper I propose a novel abstract mechanism for the creation and diffusion of knowledge and use an agent based modelling approach to explore it. The mechanism takes into account the relation between the phenomena that agents attempt to explain and the stocks of knowledge available in a society, be it individually or collectively. I find that the aggregate number of knowledge units in a society increases more slowly, the more naive its inhabitants are. I also find that the proximity between phenomena plays an important role in how often the same knowledge unit can be used. A discussion on agent based models as a means of insight into society is offered.Science Foundation Irelan

A Radical Memory: Martyrdom and Commemoration in Nineteenth-Century British Popular Radicalism
This thesis investigates the development and establishment of a distinctive commemorative culture by British popular radicalism, and in particular by Chartism, in the nineteenth century. At the intersection of memory studies, the social history of death, and the political and cultural history of radicalism and popular politics in Britain, it analyses the various commemorative practices performed, and memorials produced, by British radicals from the emergence of the radical mass-platform in the post-Napoleonic war period to the turn of the twentieth century. Through the study of the presence of memory and of a rhetoric of martyrdom in the writings, discourses, material culture, and rituals of the radical movement, this work sheds light on the great diversity of memorial practices created and adopted by radical supporters, and on the creativity and resourcefulness they displayed in their memorialisation and commemoration of the radical dead. This thesis notably demonstrates that memory and remembrance were at the core of popular radicalism s politics and culture. The desire to honour the memory of the dead shaped the movement s political struggle for parliamentary reform as well as brought radical supporters and communities together through a shared experience of grief and a determination to show themselves worthy of the martyrs sacrifice and legacy. This thesis, finally, emphasises the extent of British popular radicalism s contribution both to memory politics in nineteenth-century Britain and to the new regime of the dead that emerged in Europe at the same period
Children as researchers in Nicaragua: Children’s consultancy to transformative research
hild workers on Nicaragua’s coffee plantations have become researchers, generating knowledge which leads to action to help solve some of the severe social problems that affect the rural communities where they live and work. This article first looks at how child researchers are seen in the existing literature. It then traces the history of the approach used, known as Transformative Research by Children and Adolescents, from its origins in ‘Children’s Consultancy’ in the United Kingdom in the 1990s, through its adaptation to the Nicaraguan context and subsequent metamorphosis into today’s transformative research approach. It discusses the concept of ‘transformation’ in social research, and CESESMA’s alternative ‘four transformations’ framework, with its emphasis on a coherent concept of empowerment. It then identifies four things child researchers need from their adult supporters: appropriate and effective research methodology, skilled and sensitive process facilitation, technical support and a responsible attitude to child protection that recognises but does not exaggerate risks. It concludes by highlighting some challenges to be addressed in further developing and extending the approach
