\u27A French Homer in America: James Joyce, Henri Matisse and George Macy’s Limited Editions Club "Ulysses"\u27
On 6 December 1933, Judge John M. Woolsey of the Southern District Court of New York determined that Ulysses was not obscene and thus could be lawfully imported into the United States. By the end of the following month, Bennett Cerf, co-founder of Random House, had published the first authorized edition of James Joyce’s book in America. Then, on 22 October 1935, George Macy, the visionary director of the Limited Editions Club (LEC) in New York, a subscription-based fine arts book press, published his Ulysses with illustrations by Henri Matisse. Given its limited availability and cost—then and now—most people have never seen this monumental deluxe edition of Ulysses, and so very few people have actually tried to read it, but that is probably beside the point. The LEC Ulysses is one of the most iconic modernist books ever produced and it presented an avant-garde reimagining of Homer’s Odyssey in text and images for an American readership that may not have been quite prepared for it
Community, family, and social outcomes
We examined the direct and interactive effects of community violence and both family cohesion and conflict on collective efficacy and aggressive behaviors among immigrant young adults. Participants included 221 young adults (ages 18-26; mean age = 21.36; 45.7% female, 190 born outside the U.S.) who completed self-report measures of their exposure to neighborhood violence, social cohesion, collective efficacy, and prosocial behaviors toward friends and strangers. Results, in general, showed that community violence and family cohesion were positively associated with collective efficacy whereas community violence and family conflict were positively associated with aggressive behaviors. Family cohesion and conflict also moderated the links between community violence and aggressive behaviors. Digital youth building digital capacity: The experience of rural communities in Manitoba, Canada
Today\u27s digital society creates new realities and opportunities for rural communities. To fully take advantage of those digital opportunities, rural communities must build the capacity and culture to utilize digital technologies. People under 30 years old have grown up in a digital world, being born along with the Internet. In that context, youth may represent a unique opportunity for rural communities to embrace digital technologies and realize more of the benefits and prospects of a digital, 21st-century world. This Ph.D. research explores youth digital capital, describing the current use, barriers, and opportunities of youth and digital technologies in rural Manitoba communities. A digital lens is applied to the community capitals framework to examine rural digital readiness, opportunities and barriers in rural Manitoba. The concept of the digital divide and digital technology adoption provide additional context for the digital community capital lens. Concepts and ideas from anthropology, education, and library studies guide the exploration of building digital capacity for youth in rural communities. The methodology used for this study incorporates mixed data collection tools over two phases of data collection. The first data set sets the stage utilizing five youth focus groups, and ten key informant interviews examine the digital capacity of rural youth and communities in Manitoba. The second phase used community-based research to explore digital skill building for youth in rural Manitoba. Participant observation and participant interviews document 16-months of my role as the coding club mentor for the Westman Regional Libraries\u27 CoderDojos. In this research, I helped lead the creation of three coding clubs for 53 youth aged 7-14 across three different communities in western Manitoba. Thematic analysis explores findings from both data sets against the community capitals framework and the core concepts related to digital youth and rural communities. The findings illustrate that rural Manitoba is struggling with digital divides in infrastructure and capacity and the presence of digital deserts, areas without digital training or use opportunities. The research also demonstrated that targeted initiatives with local support can affect digital change in rural communities, building the digital capacity and a culture of exploration amongst local youth
MILPIBEA: Algorithm for Multi-objective Features Selection in (Evolving) Software Product Lines
Software Product Lines Engineering (SPLE) proposes techniques to model, create and improve groups of related software systems in a systematic way, with different alternatives formally expressed, e.g., as Feature Models. Selecting the \u27best\u27 software system(s) turns into a problem of improving the quality of selected subsets of software features (components) from feature models, or as it is widely known, Feature Configuration. When there are different independent dimensions to assess how good a software product is, the problem becomes even more challenging- it is then a multi-objective optimisation problem. Another big issue for software systems is evolution where software components change. This is common in the industry but, as far as we know, there is no algorithm designed to the particular case of multi-objective optimisation of evolving software product lines. In this paper we present MILPIBEA, a novel hybrid algorithm which combines the scalability of a genetic algorithm (IBEA) with the accuracy of a mixed-integer linear programming solver (IBM ILOG CPLEX). We also study the behaviour of our solution (MILPIBEA) in contrast with SATIBEA, a state-of-the-art algorithm in static software product lines. We demonstrate that MILPIBEA outperforms SATIBEA on average, especially for the most challenging problem instances, and that MILPIBEA is the one that continues to improve the quality of the solutions when SATIBEA stagnates (in the evolving context).Science Foundation Irelan
On the CFD modelling of slamming of the metal melt in high-pressure die casting involving lost cores
This paper uses computational fluid dynamics (CFD), in the form of the OpenFOAM
software package, to investigate the forces on the salt core in high-pressure die casting (HPDC) when being exposed to the impact of the inflowing melt in the die filling stage, with particular respect to the moment of first impact—commonly known as slamming. The melt-air system is modelled via an Eulerian volume-of-fluid approach, treating the air as a compressible perfect gas. The turbulence is treated via a Reynolds-averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) approach. The RNG k-ε and the Menter SST k-ω models are both evaluated, with the use of the latter ultimately being adopted for batch computations. A study of the effect of the Courant number, with a view to establishing mesh independence, indicates that meshes which are finer, and time steps that are smaller, than those
previously employed for HPDC simulations are required to capture the effect of slamming on the core properly, with respect to existing analytical models and empirical measurements. As a second step, it is then discussed what response should be expected when this force, with its spike-like morphology and small force-time integral, impacts the core. It is found that the displacement of the core due to the spike in the force is so small that, even though the force is high in value, the bending stress inside the core remains below the critical limit for fracture. It can therefore be concluded that, when assuming homogeneous crack-free material conditions, the spike in the force is not failure-critical
On the assessment and control optimisation of demand response programs in residential buildings
The ability to control and optimise energy consumption at end-user level is of increasing interest as a means to achieve a balance between supply and demand, particularly when large penetration of distributed renewable energy sources is being considered. Demand Response programs consist of a series of externally-driven control strategies aimed at adapting consumer end-use load to specific grid requirements. In a demand response scenario, a network of connected systems can be exploited to activate balancing strategies, to provide demand flexibility during periods of high stress for the grid. However, the widespread deployment of demand response programs in the building sector still faces significant challenges. Smart technology deployment, the lack of common standardised assessment procedures and metrics, the absence of established regulatory frameworks are among the main obstacles limiting the development of portfolios of competitive flexibility assets. The residential sector is even more affected by these challenges due to a marginal economic case, the issue of long term harmonisation of hardware and software infrastructure and the influence of the end-user behaviour and preferences on energy consumption. The present paper provides a review on the current developments of the Demand Response programs, with specific reference to the residential building sector. Methodologies and procedures for assessing building energy flexibility and Demand Response programs are described with a special focus on numerical models and available control algorithms. Moreover, markets schemes and social aspects - such as technology acceptance and awareness - and their influence on smart control technologies and algorithms are discussed. Current research gaps and challenges are identified and analysed to provide guidance for future research activities.Science Foundation IrelandESIPP UC
Bio-collections in autism research
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a group of complex neurodevelopmental disorders with diverse clinical manifestations and symptoms. In the last 10 years, there have been significant advances in understanding the genetic basis for ASD, critically supported through the establishment of ASD bio-collections and application in research. Here, we summarise a selection of major ASD bio-collections and their associated findings. Collectively, these include mapping ASD candidate genes, assessing the nature and frequency of gene mutations and their association with ASD clinical subgroups, insights into related molecular pathways such as the synapses, chromatin remodelling, transcription and ASD-related brain regions. We also briefly review emerging studies on the use of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to potentially model ASD in culture. These provide deeper insight into ASD progression during development and could generate human cell models for drug screening. Finally, we provide perspectives concerning the utilities of ASD bio-collections and limitations, and highlight considerations in setting up a new bio-collection for ASD research
Risk factors for challenging behaviors among 157 children with autism spectrum disorder in Ireland
The aim of this study was to identify risk factors for the occurrence of challenging behavior along with the specific topographies of challenging behavior shown by a sample of children with autism spectrum disorder in Ireland. The occurrence of challenging behavior was examined in comparison with the following variables: gender, age, level of intellectual disability, type of intervention and the hours of intervention being received. The Behavior Problems Inventory - 01 was used to gather data for 157 participants. Results indicated that 64.3% (n = 101) of the participants showed challenging behavior, with a high co-occurrence across categories of behavior. The present study found no correlation between age and gender and the presence of challenging behavior. Findings in relation to level of intellectual disability, type and hours of intervention received are discussed. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

Physicochemical Characterization of a Co-Amorphous Atorvastatin-Irbesartan System with a Potential Application in Fixed-Dose Combination Therapy
The aim of this study was to characterize a 1:1 molar ratio of a pharmacologically relevant co-amorphous atorvastatin-irbesartan (ATR-IRB) system obtained by quench cooling of the crystalline ATR/IRB physical mixture for potential use in the fixed-dose combination therapy. The system was characterized by employing standard differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and intrinsic dissolution rate studies. Quantum mechanical calculations were performed to obtain information regarding intermolecular interactions in the studied co-amorphous ATR-IRB system. The co-amorphous formulation showed a significant im-provement in the intrinsic dissolution rate (IDR) of IRB over pure crystalline as well as its amorphous counterpart. An unusual behavior was observed for ATR, as the IDR of ATR in the co-amorphous formulation was slightly lower than that of amorphous ATR alone. Short-term physical aging studies of up to 8 h proved that the ATR-IRB co-amorphous system remained in the amorphous form. Furthermore, no physical aging occurred in the co-amorphous system. FT-IR, density functional theory calculations, and analysis of Tg value of co-amorphous system using the Couchman–Karasz equation revealed the presence of molecular interactions between APIs, which may contribute to the increased physical stability
