    The role of an anti-inflammatory diet in conjunction to COVID-19

    Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), otherwise known as COVID-19, has challenged healthcare systems at an international level. COVID-19 suppresses the immune system by causing a systemic inflammatory response, also known as cytokine release syndrome, leaving COVID-19 patients with high levels of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines. Nutrition’s function in the respiratory and immune systems has been investigated in much research, and its significance cannot be overstated, as the nutritional status of patients has been shown to be directly connected with the severity of the disease. Key dietary components such as vitamin C, D, omega-3 fatty acids, and zinc have shown potential in their anti-inflammatory effects, as well as the famous Mediterranean diet. This review aims to discuss the use of anti-inflammatory dietary approaches to prevent Sars-CoV-2 or lessen COVID-19 effects

    Desiccation crack formation beneath the surface

    Desiccation cracks affect all mechanical and conduction properties. Previous studies have investigated the formation of surface desiccation cracks in fine-grained sediments in relation to their compressibility and suction potential. This study explores the formation of internal desiccation cracks in saturated kaolinite specimens consolidated inside self-reactive oedometer cells to reproduce the initial effective stress in buried sediments. X-ray tomography is used to monitor internal processes during consolidation and drying. Images capture the evolution of a perimetric fracture, transverse contraction, volumetric changes in entrained gas bubbles and the development of internal desiccation cracks. Entrained gas bubbles act as nucleation sites. They shrink during loading and early stages of desiccation. Eventually, the gas-water interface penetrates the soil at the bubble surface, pushes particles away, enlarges local pores and facilitates further growth of the internal desiccation crack. While air entry is grain-displacive in soft, fine-grained sediments, it becomes pore-invasive in stiff, coarse-grained sediments and internal desiccation cracks are not expected in silts or sands.KAUST endowmen

    Pollard waves with underlying currents

    We construct an exact solution of the geophysical fluid dynamics governing equations which models waves in the presence of underlying currents, extending Pollard’s wave solution to admit underlying meridional and vertical currents at mid-latitudes. We show that these currents cannot be prescribed arbitrarily, but rather must be constant and form a velocity vector which is parallel to the Earth’s rotation vector. At the equator, there is freedom to prescribe a meridional current term which may vary both zonally and vertically

    Efficacy of cold plasma functionalised water for improving microbiological safety of fresh produce and wash water recycling

    Atmospheric cold plasma (ACP) is an effective method for microbiological decontamination. This study evaluated an alternative water-based decontamination approach for inactivation of bacterial population from fresh produce and in the wash water generated from fresh produce washing. The study characterised ACP inactivation of attached Listeria innocua and Pseudomonas fluorescens inoculated on lettuce in comparison to chlorine treatment. P. fluorescens was sensitive to ACP treatment and was reduced below detection limit within 3 min of treatment. L. innocua population was reduced by ∼2.4 Log10 CFU/g after 5 min of treatment; showing similar inactivation efficacy to chlorine treatment. The microbial load in wash water was continuously decreased and was below detection limits after 10 min of ACP treatment. Micro-bubbling along with agitation assisted the bacterial detachment and distribution of reactive species, thus increasing bacterial inactivation efficacy from fresh produce and wash water. A shift in pH of plasma functionalised water was observed along with high concentration of nitrate and ozone with a relative amount of nitrites which increased with plasma exposure time. Further, L. innocua treated at different independent pH conditions showed minimal or no effect of pH on ACP bacterial inactivation efficacy. Aqueous ACP treatment poses a promising alternative for decontamination of fresh produce and the associated wash-waters which could be applied in the food industry to replace continuous chlorine dosing of process waters.Department of Agriculture, Food and the MarineScience Foundation Irelan

    Cold plasma for insect pest control: Tribolium castaneum mortality and defense mechanisms in response to treatment

    The insecticidal properties and mechanisms of high-voltage air-based atmospheric cold plasma using a contained dielectric barrier discharge reactor were investigated against Tribolium castaneum as an important bio-contaminant in stored grains spoilage. The mortality of 95.0%–100% for preadult stages can be achieved within seconds of treatment, but longer plasma exposure (5 min) is required to kill adult insects. Cold plasma treatment reduces both the respiration rate and the weight of insects and affects the levels of oxidative stress markers in adult populations. Sufficient toxicity is achievable through plasma process control in air to address the range of insect lifecycle stages that are disease vectors and pose risks for grain stability in storage.     Simultaneous disruption of PRC2 and enhancer function underlies histone H3.3-K27M oncogenic activity in human hindbrain neural stem cells.

    Driver mutations in genes encoding histone H3 proteins resulting in p.Lys27Met substitutions (H3-K27M) are frequent in pediatric midline brain tumors. However, the precise mechanisms by which H3-K27M causes tumor initiation remain unclear. Here, we use human hindbrain neural stem cells to model the consequences of H3.3-K27M on the epigenomic landscape in a relevant developmental context. Genome-wide mapping of epitope-tagged histone H3.3 revealed that both the wild type and the K27M mutant incorporate abundantly at pre-existing active enhancers and promoters, and to a lesser extent at Polycomb repressive complex 2 (PRC2)-bound regions. At active enhancers, H3.3-K27M leads to focal H3K27ac loss, decreased chromatin accessibility and reduced transcriptional expression of nearby neurodevelopmental genes. In addition, H3.3-K27M deposition at a subset of PRC2 target genes leads to increased PRC2 and PRC1 binding and augmented transcriptional repression that can be partially reversed by PRC2 inhibitors. Our work suggests that, rather than imposing de novo transcriptional circuits, H3.3-K27M drives tumorigenesis by locking initiating cells in their pre-existing, immature epigenomic state, via disruption of PRC2 and enhancer functions

    Common patterns in the public reporting of waiting time and waiting list information: findings from a sample of OECD jurisdictions

    We present findings from a review of published literature and administrative documentation on waiting time and waiting list reporting models for elective treatment in a sample of international jurisdictions (a subset of OECD countries, with regional reporting regimes treated as distinct jurisdictions). In this paper we identified common patterns in the measurement and reporting of waiting time and waiting list information for elective treatment. We mapped the waiting time, waiting list, and key performance indicator statistics reported by 15 English-speaking international jurisdictions. Three distinct patterns of maximum waiting time target measures for elective treatment were identified amongst our international sample following our patient pathway event time-point analysis: (i) full-pathway maximum wait time targets; (ii) separate wait time targets for “time-to-diagnosis” and “time-to-treatment”; and (iii) “Time-to-Treatment” waiting time target only. Our review also revealed common patterns in the reporting of waiting time and waiting list statistics as well as KPI measures amongst a sub-sample of English-speaking jurisdictions. These common patterns provide a starting point towards more standardised measurement and reporting of waiting time and waiting list statistics in benchmarking access to elective care internationally

    Policy coherence for climate change adaptation at the land-sea interface in Ireland

    One area where climate adaptation policies are proving difficult to design and implement is at the coast. On one hand, some of the most severe impacts of climate change are being recorded at the coastâ especially through erosion and floodingâ whilst on the other hand, these areas represent complex land-sea planning and policy interfaces. This paper analyses the coherency of policies along Irelandâ s coast from a climate adaptation perspective. Results suggest that many policies are developed in an ad-hoc fashion around the needs of single sectors. Improved policy coherence at all levels of governance is required to address this

    Facilitating reflection in teletandem through automatically generated conversation metrics and playback video

    This pilot study focuses on a tool called L2L that allows second language (L2) learners to visualise and analyse their Zoom interactions with native speakers. L2L uses the Zoom transcript to automatically generate conversation metrics and its playback feature with timestamps allows students to replay any chosen portion of the conversation for post- session reflection and self-review. This exploratory study investigates a seven-week teletandem project, where undergraduate students from an Irish university learning French (B2) interacted with their peers from a French university learning English (B2+) via Zoom. The data collected from a survey (N=43) and semi-structured interviews (N=35) show that the quantitative conversation metrics and qualitative review of the synchronous content helped raise students’ confidence levels while engaging with native speakers. Furthermore, it allowed them to set tangible goals to improve their participation, and be more aware of what, why, and how they are learning

    Resilience and the EU\u27s Global Strategy: The Potential Promise of Justice

    The appearance of ‘resilience’ as a core concept within the EU Global Strategy (EUGS) is a significant focus of scholarly interest while for their part, EU institutions are anxious to put flesh on the bones of that strategy. The aim of this paper is to suggest that far from representing a collapse of European ambition or indeed a ‘middle ground’ position between liberal ambition and realist pragmatism, resilience potentially entails a profound re-engineering of EU foreign policy, serving the cause of an overarching concept of global justice. Such an approach is grounded in reciprocal and accountable relationships in search of ‘fair terms of social cooperation’. It also implies the creation of institutional decision-making and adjudicating fora which are profoundly deliberative in their orientation. This paper will argue that \u27resilience\u27 has therefore the potential to be a transformative concept in the design and pursuit of EU foreign policy. It also faces significant challenges, not least where there is profound disagreement or stark choices to be made over foundational principles. Resilience nonetheless opens pathways to perhaps a different kind of EU foreign policy, offering significant added-value to EU member states’ diplomacy.European Commission Horizon 202
