    What we regret most . . . and why

    Which domains in life produce the greatest potential for regret, and what features of those life domains explain why? Using archival and laboratory evidence, the authors show that greater perceived opportunity within life domains evokes more intense regret. This pattern is consistent with previous publications demonstrating greater regret stemming from high rather than low opportunity or choice. A meta-analysis of 11 regret ranking studies revealed that the top six biggest regrets in life center on (in descending order) education, career, romance, parenting, the self, and leisure. Study Set 2 provided new laboratory evidence that directly linked the regret ranking to perceived opportunity. Study Set 3 ruled out an alternative interpretation involving framing effects. Overall, these findings show that people’s biggest regrets are a reflection of where in life they see their largest opportunities; that is, where they see tangible prospects for change, growth, and renewal

Data were collected about twelve communities in four countries: the United States, India, New Zealand, and Romania. The findings suggest that there is a hierarchy of communities and societies, and that adolescence is socially constructed in each of these local settings

    Abstract Overwintering habits of hatchling Blanding’s turtles (Emydoidea blandingii) are unknown. To determine whether these turtles are able to survive winter in aquatic habitats, we submerged hatchlings in normoxic (155 mmHg Po2) and hypoxic (6 mmHg Po2) water at 4°C, recording survival times and measuring changes in key physiological variables. For comparison, we simultaneously studied hatchling softshell (Apalone spinifera) and snapping (Chelydra serpentina) turtles, which are known to overwinter in aquatic habitats. In normoxic water, C. serpentina and A. spinifera survived to the termination of the experiment (76 and 77 d, respectively). Approximately one‐third of the E. blandingii died during 75 d of normoxic submergence, but the cause of mortality was unclear. In hypoxic water, average survival times were 6 d for A. spinifera, 13 d for E. blandingii, and 19 d for C. serpentina. Mortality during hypoxic submergence was probably caused by metabolic acidosis, which resulted from accumulated lactate. Unlike the case with adult turtles, our hatchlings did not increase plasma calcium and magnesium, nor did they sequester lactate within the shell. Our results suggest that hatchling E. blandingii are not particularly well suited to hibernation in hypoxic aquatic habitats

    Interference Cancellation Using Power Minimization and Self-coherence Properties of GPS Signals

    This paper presents the performance analysis of two digital beam forming techniques used in conjunction with a software GPS receiver to mitigate interference to GPS signals in interference environment. The first method is the constrained minimum power (MOP) method. The second method is the so-called self-coherence restoral (SCORE) method. Both experimental and simulation data are used in the study. The study was performed using experiment data collected in an anechoic chamber to obtain GPS and interference signals. A two by two GPS antenna array and a four channel radio frequency front end were used to collect simulated GPS data generated using hardwarebased simulator in controlled interference environment. Three types of interference signals are deployed in the experiments: FM chirp, binary phase shift key, and broadband. The interference power levels used were +20, +30, and +40 dB above GPS signal power. A software GPS receiver was used to perform acquisition of GPS signals to evaluate the performance of the beam forming algorithms. The preliminary result showed that the MOP method can effectively mitigate all three types of interference at all power levels if a single interference source is present. Experiments using multiple broadband interference sources were also analyzed and our results shown that the effectiveness of the MOP method diminishes as the interference signal power increases and ceases to function at the +40 dB level. The SCORE method does not exhibit consistent performance for the experimental data. This is consistent with our simulation results which show that for the SCORE algorithm to generate satisfactory results, sufficient number of antenna elements is necessary even if there is no interference source present. The number of antenna element is determined by the number of satellites available, as well as the number of interference sources. The experimental and simulation results are discussed in this paper
