Are E-book Big Deal Bundles Still Valuable? [slide deck]
The academic e-book market has undergone significant change in the last five years. E-book availability has greatly increased as library demand has grown, with an increasing percentage of library acquisitions preferring electronic rather than print format. E-book acquisition models like patron-driven acquisition and short-term loan have now become commonplace and available from a multitude of consortia, publishers and aggregators. With the wide availability of these models, is there still value in buying e-books through package deals?
To help answer this question, we will present the results of a usage-based analysis of Wiley e-books. Since 2012, Miami University Libraries have purchased Wiley e-book collections through a consortial OhioLINK contract. Previously purchased OhioLINK e-book collections have been accessible to patrons through both OhioLINK’s Electronic Book Center platform and the publisher platform. The Wiley e-book purchase deviates from previous practice by being available to patrons only on the publisher platform and our analysis is therefore focused on COUNTER e-book usage reports from the Wiley platform. We also augment the usage data with title-level information, such as subject and book type. This preliminary study focuses on the 2012 Wiley collection and its use over a three-year period (2012-2014) and will include data-driven findings presented in visually useful ways

Healthy lifestyle communities: an innovative model of educational architecture and urban planning which promotes health and wellness
The focus of this essay is the design of Healthy K-12 Educational Facilities to promote health of the individual as well as the community. The term health can be defined as the mental and physical wellness of the individual, given his or her own personal goals. Health is investigated to promote: physical activity, mental soundness, social stability, nutritious consumption, and environmental awareness for the individual as well as the community. The intent is for health to become second nature. To accomplish the primary goal of personal health and wellness, this essay reviews and assesses The Active Design Guidelines and creates supporting arguments through the literary work of Richard Gerver, Creating Tomorrow’s Schools Today. Two case studies: the Federal Environmental Agency by Sauerbruch Hutton and Marysville Getchell High School Campus by Craig Mason and DLR Group are utilized as precedents, but are also critically analyzed. The conclusion introduces an existing site with the potential for the design of a Healthy K-12 Educational Facility. Within this proposal is the development of a complete system made up of specific programmatic strategies, which are crucial to the design of a Healthy K-12 Educational Facility, promoting health for the individual as well as the communit
Assessing Technological Self-Efficacy to Support Student Learning
Technology usage is a vital, and often expected, prerequisite for student engagement and learning. Knowledge of various technologies is assumed, but is that really the case? One way to examine this is by surveying Technological Self-Efficacy (TSE), or one’s belief in their ability to complete a technological task. This poster will discuss the usage of a TSE instrument, the results, and how that data was used to support student technological learning outside of the classroom

Modeling Impact of Hurricane Damages on Income Distribution in the Coastal U.S.
This article examines the impact of catastrophic
hurricane events on income distribution in hurricane
states in the United States. Media claims have been
made and the perception created that the most damaging
impact of hurricanes is on the lowest income population in
the affected states. If these claims are true, they may have
serious implications for the insurance industry and government
policy makers. We develop a panel data, fixed
effects econometric model that includes hurricane-impacted
states as cross-sections using annual data for a period of
almost 100 years. The Gini coefficient is used as a measure
of income inequality, and is a function of normalized
hurricane economic damages, gross domestic product
(GDP), a set of socioeconomic variables that serves as a
control, time trend, and cross-sectional dummy variables.
Findings indicate that for every 100 billion US dollars in
hurricane economic damages there is an increase in income
inequality by 5.4 % as measured by Gini coefficient.
Political, sociodemographic, and economic variables are
also significant. These include such variables as the political
party controlling the U.S. Senate, the proportion of
nonwhite population by state, and GDP. Time trend is a
positive and significant variable, suggesting an increase in
income inequality over time. There are significant differences
among the states included in the study. Our results
demonstrate that different segments of the population are
differently impacted by hurricanes and suggest how that
differential impact could be considered in future government
policies and business decisions, particularly those
made by the insurance industry
Report on Session: Sailing the Digital Seas: Charting a New Course with CONTENTdm
With the transition of government publications from print to digital over the last decade, the State Library of North Carolina saw the need to implement a content management system for the state’s digital publications. The State Library formed a Digital Information Management Program (DIMP) in 2006 to address the challenge of managing their digital collections. The Library chose to utilize OCLC’s CONTENTdm software to manage their digital materials and associated metadata. The presentation described below outlined the processes and challenges in managing their collections with this software
Rebranding Detroit: music, identity, and perception in the new post-industrial era
In post-industrial society, economic globalization has overpowered local culture. By establishing a mobilized task force to achieve top levels of efficiency, society has effectively reduced identity and spirit through decentralization of place. "Re-Branding Detroit" explores the issues of identity and brand within modern Detroit to help propose a design methodology for the city as it moves forward, utilizing music, abandoned architecture and the youthful, grassroots movement to achieve the goal of maintaining local identity, spurring social justice, and stabilizing neighborhoods for future growth. First, this thesis defines the proper context of identity and branding within post-industrial society. Secondly, it analyzes the historical and cultural precedents of Detroit to find a unique solution. Lastly, it examines specific grassroots case studies in Detroit: the Heidelberg Project, The Black History 101 Mobile Museum, and PlayHouse to offer a design solution. This thesis also explores the overarching ideas of politics, race, and economics that act as the proverbial foundation that the cultural narrative rests upon, which advocates the use of music and abandoned architecture within the growing, grassroots movement, effectively linking society with an ethical and effective type of rhetorical brand for Detroit
Preservation Outreach Through Non-Traditional Instruction and Engagement
This poster will present outreach initiatives undertaken by the library’s preservation department to promote library preservation among students and patrons. In collaboration with special collections, the preservation librarian has lead several instruction sessions for various classes within the university’s art department. The sessions focus on bookbinding and book structure through the perspective of book repair. The success of these sessions has lead to a regular schedule of classes with multiple art department faculty.
Based on feedback from these sessions, the department held several public events in order to reach a wider student population. Events included setting up book repair stations in various high traffic areas of the library, where passing students could observe book repairs being performed. The department also sponsored a book arts event, in which students observed book repair and book binding demonstrations. This poster will discuss the collaborative process and outcomes of these initiatives
Identification and expression of a putative facilitative urea transporter in three species of true frogs (Ranidae): implications for terrestrial adaptation.
Urea transporters (UTs) help mediate the transmembrane movement of urea and therefore are likely important in amphibian osmoregulation. Although UTs contribute to urea reabsorption in anuran excretory organs, little is known about the protein’s distribution and functions in other tissues, and their importance in the evolutionary adaptation of amphibians to their environment remains unclear. To address these questions, we obtained a partial sequence of a putative UT and examined relative abundance of this protein in tissues of the wood frog (Rana sylvatica), leopard frog (R. pipiens), and mink frog (R. septentrionalis), closely related species that are adapted to different habitats. Using immunoblotting techniques, we found the protein to be abundant in the osmoregulatory organs but also present in visceral organs, suggesting that UTs play both osmoregulatory and nonosmoregulatory roles in amphibians. UT abundance seems to relate to the species’ habitat preference, as levels of the protein were higher in the terrestrial R. sylvatica, intermediate in the semiaquatic R. pipiens, and quite low in the aquatic R. septentrionalis. These findings suggest that, in amphibians, UTs are involved in various physiological processes, including solute and water dynamics, and that they have played a role in adaptation to the osmotic challenges of terrestrial environments
