Effectiveness of including weight management in smoking cessation treatments: A meta-analysis of behavioral interventions
[EN] The potential of weight gain after smoking cessation reduces the incentive to quit. This metaanalysis examines the efficacy of behavioral interventions for smoking cessation that also address postcessation weight gain.
Methods: Medline, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched for randomized controlled trials on behavioral treatments targeting both health outcomes. Six separate meta-analyses were undertaken to assess treatment efficacy on smoking abstinence and weight outcomes at end of treatment (EOT), short-term, and long-term follow-up. Individual and treatment moderators were examined as well as methodological quality and publication bias of studies.
Results: A total of 28 studies were included in the meta-analysis. There was a statistically significant positive impact of treatments addressing both targets on smoking outcomes at EOT (RR = 1.279, 95% CI: 1.096, 1.492, p = .002), but not at follow-ups. Age impacted on EOT abstinence rates Q (1) = 4.960, p = .026) while increasing the number of sessions significantly improved EOT abstinence rates (p = .020). There was no statistically significant impact of these treatments on weight at EOT (Hedges’ g = − 0.015, 95% CI: − .164, 0.135, p = .849) or follow-ups (short term: Hedges’ g = 0.055, 95% CI: − 0.060, 0.170, p = .347; long term: Hedges’ g = − 0.320, 95% CI: − .965, 0.325, p = .331). There were minimal impacts of publication bias, mostly related to sample size, meaning studies including small sample sizes revealed larger effect sizes on abstinence at EOT.
Discussion: Addressing post-cessation weight management in treatments for smoking cessation significantly enhances tobacco abstinence at EOT though it was not found to have a lasting impact after treatmentSIMinisterio de Ciencia e Innovación (España)Gobierno del Principado de Asturia

Mercadona (Spain): A retail model in expansión
[EN] This paper evaluates the effect of Spain's regulatory framework on Mercadona's expansion. Mercadona is the main company in this commercial distribution sector and so we have taken the North American company Wal-Mart as a classic example of the sector on a world scale. In Spain the regulatory framework is characterized by the high grade of autonomy of the regional governments over the development of business regulation. In other words, the main objective is to check the extent of competitive bias resulting from regulatory risk. The article discusses the stores and retailers of Mercadona. Through the use of quantitative indicators the degree of concentration-dispersion is studied, which is reflected graphically with a series of maps. It also discusses the normalisation constraints by quantitative data analysis from a region with trade liberalisation criteria (Madrid) and another with criteria for restricting the construction of large retail outlets (Barcelona).S
Rapamycin Plays a Pivotal Role in the Potent Antifungal Activity Exhibited Against Verticillium dahliae by Streptomyces iranensis OE54 and Streptomyces lacaronensis sp. nov. Isolated from Olive Roots
[EN] Verticillium wilt, caused by Verticillium dahliae, poses a significant threat to olive trees (Olea europaea L.). The isolation of endophytic Streptomyces strains from olive roots has led to the discovery of several strains showing strong antifungal activity against V. dahliae, as demonstrated through in vitro and small-scale soil experiments. Molecular analyses confirmed that strain OE54 belongs to Streptomyces iranensis. The main antifungal compound identified in this strain was rapamycin. Rapamycin displayed potent antifungal effects, notably inhibiting conidiospore germination (IC50 = 87.36 μg/mL) and the hyphal growth of V. dahliae, with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC50) of 3.91 ng/mL. Additionally, a second rapamycin-producing strain, OE57T, was isolated. Phenotypic and genotypic analyses indicated that OE57T represents a new species, which is proposed to be named Streptomyces lacaronensis sp. nov., with OE57T designated as the type strain (=DSM 118741T; CECT 31164T). The discovery of two endophytic rapamycin-producing Streptomyces strains residing within olive roots is especially notable, given the rarity of rapamycin production among microorganisms. These findings highlight the potential of rapamycin-producing Streptomyces strains in developing biofertilizers to manage V. dahliae and reduce the impact of Verticillium wilt on olive trees and other crops.SIThis research was funded by Rio Lacarón S.L. New therapeutic approaches to Alzheimer's disease
[EN] Alzheimer's disease is one of the most advanced neurodegenerative diseases with the greatest impact worldwide, characterized by progressive deterioration of cognitive functions. Current treatments only address the symptoms of the disease, without offering a cure or halting its progression. For this reason, a narrative review has been conducted, compiling the most recent advances in the main areas of research as possible treatments for this disease. Immunotherapy, with monoclonal antibodies such as lecanemab, has been shown to slow the disease by targeting mainly beta-amyloid plaques and tau protein. Gene and molecular therapies act directly on the pathogenic mechanisms of Alzheimer's, reducing the accumulation of amyloid plaques and tau protein and protecting neuronal functions. Stem cell therapy, thanks to its ability to differentiate into various cell types, enables neuronal regeneration and slows the neurodegeneration characteristic of Alzheimer's. Despite some current limitations, such as side effects and the experimental phase of many therapies, the progress made opens a hopeful window towards more effective treatments and, eventually, a possible cure for Alzheimer's
Irreversible habitat specialization does not constrain diversification in hypersaline water beetles
[EN] Specialization to extreme environments is often considered an evolutionary dead-end, leading to irreversible adaptations and reduced evolvability. There is, however, mixed evidence for this macroevolutionary pattern, and limited data from speciose lineages. Here, we tested the effect of habitat specialization to hypersaline waters in the diversification rates of aquatic beetles of the genus Ochthebius (Coleoptera, Hydraenidae), using a molecular phylogeny with more than 50% of the 546 recognized species, including representatives of all but one of the nine recognized subgenera and 17 species groups. Phylogenies were built combining mitochondrial and nuclear genes, with the addition of 42 mitochondrial genomes. Using Bayesian methods of character reconstruction, we show that hypersaline tolerance is an irreversible ecological specialization that arose multiple times. Two lineages of Ochthebius experienced a significant increase in diversification rates, one of them inhabiting hypersaline waters, but there was no overall correlation with habitat or any significant decrease in diversification rates despite the irreversibility of hypersaline tolerance. Our study tested for the first time the impact of hypersaline habitat specialization on diversification rates, finding no support for it to be an evolutionary dead-end. On the contrary, multiple and ancient lineages fully adapted to these extreme osmotic conditions have persisted and diversified over a long evolutionary timescaleSIA.V. was supported by an FPI-MINECO PhD grant (BES-2014-069398) from the Spanish Government, and part of the analyses were done under a short-stay grant (EEBB-I-17-11993) from the Spanish Government.
