[EN] The complexity and decontextualization of science and technology push citizens away from scientific culture, and reduce the latter’s role in social decisions. To tackle this situation, Scientific Culture and Innovation Units (UCC+i) were created by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) in 2007. Over the past 15 years, these units have expanded in number, production, and budget. [EN] Bioclimatic classification (WBCS), which examines the relationship between vegetation distribution and climatic variables such as precipitation and temperature, is essential for understanding the ecological dynamics. This research focuses on producing a detailed bioclimatic map of Oaxaca, Mexico, at a spatial resolution of 30 arc-seconds, using the methodology developed by Rivas-Martínez et al. (2011). Oaxaca, characterised by its complex topography and diverse climatic conditions, provides a unique opportunity to study bioclimatic patterns in a tropical region. Using high-resolution climate data from Chelsa database, we identified and mapped different bioclimates, variants, thermotypes and ombrotypes horizons and levels of continentality within the tropical macrobioclimate. Our analysis revealed a rich diversity of bioclimatic zones, reflecting the complex interplay between Oaxaca’s physical geography and its bioclimates. The results, presented in high resolution maps, highlight the spatial variability and complexity of Oaxaca’s bioclimatic landscape. These findings are crucial for several applications, including biodiversity conservation, agricultural planning and climate change adaptation strategies. By providing an accurate bioclimatic classification, this study makes a significant contribution to bioclimatology and could give valuable insights into climate-vegetation relationships in tropical regions. This detailed bioclimatic map improves our understanding of the current ecological status of Oaxaca and serves as a critical tool for future environmental planning and conservation efforts. Furthermore, it could be the basis for planning in national programs that consider agriculture and forests in Mexico such as Programa Sembrando Vida (PSV)SIFinancial support is acknowledged from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México Project: DGAPA-PAPIIT IN105721, Project IN229325 DGAPAUNAM and Posdoc scholarship for Alejandro González-Pérez (UNAM-DGAPA Postdoctoral Program

Intermittent ne-waza exercise leads to greater effort in uke compared to tori in prepubescent judo athletes

[EN] This study investigated physiological and perceptual responses between uke (the athlete receiving a technique) and tori (the athlete executing a technique) during intermittent osaekomi-waza exercises in prepubescent judo athletes. Fifteen child judo athletes (age: 10.8 ± 1.1 years) participated voluntarily. In this cross-over design with randomization (except for the first visit), athletes completed three sessions: anthropometric measurements and familiarization, followed by intermittent osaekomi-waza exercises as both uke and tori. The exercise protocol consisted of four sets of 20-second intermittent osaekomi-waza using kesa-gatame, interspersed with 10-second rest intervals (1:½ work-to-rest ratio), performed on separate days. Heart rate (HR) was measured at rest, immediately after exercise, and one minute after exercise. The rating of perceived exertion (RPE) was assessed using a 0–10 scale immediately after each exercise bout. While a two-way repeated measures ANOVA indicated a statistically significant main effect of role on HR, with higher values in the uke role compared to the tori role across all measurement times, Bayesian analysis did not provide substantial evidence supporting this role effect. Athletes also reported significantly higher RPE scores in the uke role than in the tori role, indicating greater perceptual demands in prepubescent judo athletes, despite similar heart rate patterns between roles

= The military use of capoeira: myths and facts regarding the War of Paraguay (1864-70)

[EN] The Brazilian folklorist historiography has traditionally used the example of the Paraguayan War to call for the martial character of capoeira. According to these authors, this art was not only used in combat but may also have been decisive in certain battles. This paper aims to establish the current state of affairs in this regard, as well as provide new sources and ideas that may validate or refute these statements, given their significant role in the construction of Brazil’s national historical narrative. This article will first analyse the presence of capoeira fighters in the Paraguayan War, with particular emphasis on the case of the Zouaves, the soldier Marcolino, and the specialists in naval boarding combat. Thereafter, the study seeks to determine the extent to which capoeira could have been transferable to the military context at that time

Feeding Sodium Hydroxide-Treated Almond Hulls to Assaf Sheep: Effects on Chemical Composition, Nutrient Digestibility, and Zootechnical Performance

[EN] Feeding accounts for approximately 70% of total costs in livestock production, underscoring the need for cost-effective and high-quality alternative feed sources. Almond hulls (AHs), a byproduct of the almond processing industry, represent a promising option due to their availability and potential nutritional value. Moreover, their inclusion in animal diets contributes to a reduction in environmental waste associated with their disposal. This study examined the effects of incorporating 4% sodium hydroxide (NaOH)- treated AHs into the diets of Assaf sheep (rams, ewes, and growing lambs) on feed utilization and animal performance. The experiment evaluated the chemical composition of AHs, nutrient digestibility, sexual behavior and semen quality in rams, milk composition in ewes, and the performance of growing lambs fed diets with increasing levels of inclusion of AHs. A total of 60 ewes and 21 rams were randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups, receiving diets containing 0%, 20%, or 40% AHs. NaOH treatment reduced the concentrations of organic matter and fiber fractions, while increasing the crude protein concentration of AHs (p 0.05). Feeding a diet with 40% Na-OH-treated AHs significantly improved the daily weight gain (p = 0.002) of growing lambs up to 70 days after birth, and enhanced (p < 0.05) the libido, scrotal circumference, and semen quality of mature rams. In addition, ewes fed a diet containing 40% AHs showed (p < 0.05) improved fertility, prolificacy, and milk quality. NaOH-treated AHs are a cost-effective and sustainable feed ingredient that can improve reproductive performance and milk production, thereby increasing overall livestock productivity. The 40% inclusion level yielded the most favorable outcomes across all performance parameters evaluated in rams, ewes, and lambs.S

Muscles proteome analysis; irisin administration mimics some molecular effects of exercise in quadriceps muscle

    No full text
[EN] Because of health-promoting effects, the adaptation of skeletal muscles to exercise is considered a therapeutic strategy for metabolic complications and musculoskeletal disabilities. Myokines display many beneficial effects of different exercise modalities. Among them, irisin is known as a systemic effector that positively influences several organs. There are a few studies about the effects of irisin on skeletal muscles, and irisin prosperities need to be well-defined for being an exercise mimetic. To aim this purpose, we assessed the proteome profile of mouse skeletal muscle after eight weeks of irisin injection comparing to resistance and endurance exercise treated groups. In the current study, two-dimensional gel electrophoresis was used to evaluate the protein content of the quadriceps muscle. The results were analyzed with Image Master 2D Platinum V6 software. Differentially expressed proteins were characterized by mass spectrometry (MALDI TOF/TOF) and interpreted using protein data banks and co-expression network. Irisin increases cellular ATP content by driving its overproduction through glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation similar to two exercise protocols and as a specific property, decreases ATP consumption through creatine kinase downregulation. It also improves the microstructural properties of quadriceps muscle by increasing fiber proteins and might induce cellular proliferation and differentiation. Network analysis of differentially expressed proteins also revealed the co-expression of Irisin precursor with structural and metabolic-related proteins. The protein alterations after irisin administration display the potential of this myokine to mimic some molecular effects of exercise, suggesting it a promising candidate to improve muscle metabolism and structureSIThis work was extracted from a Ph.D. thesis and was supported by Shahrekord University of Medical Sciences (SKUMS) [Grant Number: 2770

SARS-CoV-2 viability under different meteorological conditions, surfaces, fluids and transmission between animals

[EN] Since the COVID-19 outbreak, researchers have tried to characterise the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 to better understand the pathogenic mechanisms of the virus and prevent further dissemination. As a consequence, there has been a bloom in scientific research papers focused on the behaviour of the virus in different environmental contexts. Nevertheless, despite these efforts and due to its novelty, available information about this coronavirus is limited, as several research studies are still ongoing. This review aims to shed light on this issue. To that end, we have examined the scientific literature to date regarding the viability of SARS-CoV-2 on surfaces and fluids or under different environmental conditions (temperature, precipitation and UV radiation). We have also addressed the role of animals in the transmission of this coronavirus.SIThe authors would like to thank the Celera association (www.acelerame.org) for its support within the action framework against COVID-19,the Academia Joven de España for all the advice provided during manuscript preparation
