“The Community for Educational Experiments”: The Alliance Israélite Universelle, Gender, and Jewish Education in Casablanca, Morocco 1886-1906

    No full text
At the end of the nineteenth century, the Alliance Israelite Universelle (AIU) opened boys’ and girls’ schools in Casablanca, Morocco, introducing ideas of European-inflected modernity and secular education to the local Jewish community. Letters and reports from the founding directors provide insight into the problems, social and practical, they encountered and reveal the ways in which both Moroccan and European gender norms affected this “educational experiment.

France Like Nobody’s Watching: My Undercover Observations and Experiences in the Country I Love

    Get PDF
This text is a series of 18 creative nonfiction essays that examine France, the author’s many experiences there, and her opinions of French culture and what sets the French apart from Americans. In a lighthearted, sarcastic tone, these first-person essays use narrative, anecdotes, and statistics to study, discuss, and, in some instances, contradict many of the stereotypes about the French. The work follows in the tradition of many other travel writers, such as Mark Twain and David Sedaris, who have used France as their primary subject. It was directly influenced by Dave Barry and his France-related columns, Adam Gopnik’s From Paris to the Moon, as well as the book layouts and visual style of Janice MacLeod’s A Paris Year. The manuscript will eventually be accompanied by photos and formatted as a book

Displacement Rates and Lateral Continuity of Baton Rouge Fault System Segments in the Vicinity of the East Orleans Land Bridge, Louisiana

    Get PDF
The Baton Rouge Fault System (BRFS) is a system of deep-seated, east-trending normal faults. Analysis of a 2-D industry seismic dataset in Lake Pontchartrain and two, 3-D datasets in Lake Borgne, revealed three faults that may show lateral continuity beneath the East Orleans Land Bridge (EOLB). Biostratigraphy from 33 oil/gas industry well logs were used for correlation with deep seismic data. BasinMod was used to generate a burial history of the Cenozoic strata. Cross sections of 22 collected vibracores with 500 yr BP interval isochron estimations, calculated from 17 vibracore samples of radiocarbon dated (C14) relict marsh organics and Rangia cuneata shells, show fault displacement in Holocene stratigraphy. A grid of high-resolution, Chirp seismic data collected shows visible offset of strata during the Late Pleistocene and Holocene. Aerial imagery and Lidar datasets show possible scarps and other surface expressions along the projected surface traces of the BRFS on the EOLB

Pride of Missouri: The Adventures of Missouri Farm Boys in 1940s World Conflict

    Get PDF
In collaboration with the Museum of Missouri Military History, an exhibition for the 203rd Coast Artillery Battalion (Anti-Aircraft) housed in the National Guard Headquarters exhibit case will be on display March 2020 through April 2020 in Jefferson City, Missouri. The exhibit will show the Missouri men deployed for military service, newspaper articles the men wrote, and objects the men brought back from the time of service. The paper is a historical narrative essay about the mobilization of the 203rd Coast Artillery Battalion (Anti-Aircraft) during World War II, and from the research, a physical exhibit and an online exhibit have been created. The goal of the project is to encourage people to remember World War II by telling the story of Missourians who went to war, and the importance of hometown identity and pride by showing how the men kept the connection to hometowns by writing to the hometown newspapers
