This project looks at the development of West End using the Sintes family and its boatbuilding business as a case study on how generational businesses are affected by tourism, natural disasters, and urban development. This project has used oral histories of the Sintes family to tell their personal story of West End, this terraqueous gap filled with boats, crawfish boils, natural disasters, and human loss, and in doing so, preserved and recorded a part of West End\u27s maritime lake culture that might otherwise be lost
Recognition and Acceptance: An Examination of the Louisiana Volunteer Battalions on Line Jackson
Get PDFThis paper examines the motivators and legacy of the Louisiana volunteer units on Line Jackson during the winter of 1814-1815. Orleans Parish fielded three volunteer battalions to the final engagements: the Orleans Volunteers, and the First and Second Battalions of Free Men of Color. Two companies, Beale’s Rifles and a Baratarian artillery unit, were attached to the Orleans Volunteers under the command of Major Plauché. Each volunteer, both as an individual and as a unit, hoped to gain some benefit from military service beyond defense of their homes. This paper argues that each one sought recognition and acceptance from their community and from the republic for which they fought. The experience of Louisiana’s Creoles under both French and Spanish regimes held that military service was necessary to attain economic and social advantage. The Battle of New Orleans tested whether or not military service under the American republic provided the same benefit

Get PDFMy work revolves around using a specialized blend of art, design, and craft to interpret political narratives through fabricated products. These objects weave contemporary commentary and consumer indulgences into sculptural cultures. Each product is designed to mimic its own marketed culture—offering an enticingly tactile, interactive experience that is equal parts confusing, concerning, and delightful. The products are accompanied by investment opportunities in the form of popular, limited released merchandized objects, such as hats and patches. Using humor and subtlety, my gamelike installations explore arenas such as agency, autonomy, intimacy, and dueling realities in a time of ecological collapse and cultural reification. I also examine these themes in the construction of my ‘sock puppet’ tapestries. Present in my work are my own frustrations about the past, doubts on the present, and concerns for the future; however, I also strongly believe in a better world
An Analysis of the impact of a Social Emotional Learning Program on Transient Students’ Competencies and Perceptions of School Climate
Get PDFWith the passing of the Every Student Succeeds Act (2016), schools are now expected to assess more than just the academic achievement of their student body. While states can choose how they meet this expectation, many choose to focus on school climate. This change is important because, while crime in schools has gone down, feelings of being unsafe or bullied have gone up. To support schools in both assessing and improving their student’s perception of safety, schools have the opportunity to use social and emotional learning to improve measures of school climate, which provides indicators of student perceptions of the school setting. This research assessed one of those programs, Conscious Discipline, with a focus on transient students, a group of students significantly impacted by feelings of isolation, bullying, and victimization. With the use of the Delaware School Climate Survey student perceptions of school climate were assessed and through multiple ANOVAs it was revealed that a school using one specific SEL program, Conscious Discipline, did not improve their students’ perceptions of school climate as compared to a peer school, though it did support transient students in feeling more in line with their peers. Implications of this work include a focus on principal’s hiring methods of teachers and their perceptions of the use of a specific SEL within their classrooms. Additionally, future research should focus on integrating teacher and student perceptions of school climate when analyzing Conscious Discipline
Criminal Injustice: Considering White Privilege and Colonization in the Examination of Racial Bias in the United States Criminal Justice System

This research examines the United States\u27 criminal justice system while considering how the country’s past of oppression has resulted in a racially biased system. Through analysis of policies, literature, and quantitative data, the primary goal of this research is not only to exhibit that racial discrepancies exist within the criminal justice system, but also to question how they persist in order to determine a solution. By utilizing both qualitative data collected through existing social theory as well as quantitative data showing varying perceptions of the American criminal justice system, the mixed method approach to this research strives to demonstrate that when it comes to justice for all, both the source of racial bias and thesolution can be found in observing a history of colonialism and the pervasiveness of white privilege
The Impact of COVID-19 on Transgender Body Image and Mental Health: A Qualitative Perspective
Get PDFThis thesis is an examination of the role that public spaces and social groups play in the strengthening of the body image and mental health of transgender individuals. Using Minority Stress Theory and the theories of West and Zimmerman concerning “doing” gender, along with Goffman’s theories of gender advertisement and interaction rituals, a discourse can be created on the impact on transgender individuals’ body image and mental health during public health issues that require stay-at-home mandates. When public health issues like COVID-19 occur, transgender people find themselves isolated, creating a potential for heightened issues with body dysphoria, depression, and other mental health issues. Using an online qualitative interview tool and interviews of transgender individuals, insight can be gained on how the lack of public spaces and access to social support groups creates a mental health issue for this group as they are finding themselves forced to stay away from the safe spaces they know. This insight and subsequent discourse can then be used to create helpful options to assist transgender individuals that may find themselves struggling with issues that arise during situations like COVID-19 that require stay-at-home restrictions
Hind Wing Eyespots of Brassolini Butterflies (Lepidoptera, Nymphalidae): Evolutionary Diversification and Functions in Anti-predator Defense and Mating Behavior
Get PDFVentral hind wing eyespots are prominent pattern elements in Brassolini butterflies, likely functioning in predator-prey interactions and reproductive activities. Caligo and Opsiphanes differ in male mate-seeking behaviors and it has been suggested that Caligo females use the male cua1 eyespot as a mate-locating cue, but Opsiphanes females do not seem to do so. We predict Caligo males should have larger eyespots than congeneric females, but the sexes would not differ in eyespot size in Opsiphanes. Our analyses supported both these predictions. Displacing the eyespot to the center of the wing makes eyespots more conspicuous, we asked if eyespot position and size covaried across the Brassolini phylogeny. While we did observe a positive relationship, we found these two variables contained significant phylogenetic signal. Our study suggests that the cua1 eyespot performs multiple functions in Brassolini and might be evolving under natural and sexual selection
