Temporal Thermal Heterogeneity as a Potential Evolutionary Driver of Thermoregulation in the Generalist Grasshopper Melanoplus differentialis from Five Sites in the Midwestern and Southern United States
Environmental drivers of the evolution of thermoregulation, especially thermal fluctuation, have been incompletely investigated. I used a combination of field and laboratory studies to determine if thermal heterogeneity selected for greater thermal tolerance or ability to thermoregulate in a generalist grasshopper by testing upper and lower thermal limits, behavioral thermoregulation, and acclimation. I measured these from individuals originating from sites that had varying degrees of thermal fluctuation over time. I found partial support for thermal heterogeneity as an evolutionary driver of thermal tolerance, behavioral thermoregulation, and acclimation. However, whether or not differences in these metrics conformed to my hypothesis varied by sex; males more often followed my hypothesized pattern than did females. This may be because females, which are larger than males, are over a critical thermal limit for mass, which affects thermal properties. I also tested gene expression from different sites in males, and found that gene expression differed significantly, but not in a manner that suggested thermal heterogeneity was the cause. This could have been due to population-specific evolutionary influences not related to temperature. These studies highlight the complex interactions among thermal tolerance, thermoregulation, plasticity, and thermal properties of the environment

Exploring Community- and Society-Level Interventions for Healing Historical Trauma: A Grounded Theory Study
Addressing historical trauma in populations that have been exposed to long-term mass violence, persecution, and systematic oppression is a critical step in the healing process in affected communities and societies. Despite the growing consensus for adopting a multilevel approach to mitigate the present-day impacts of historical grievances, extant literature on collective mental health interventions that address historical trauma is limited, fragmented, and largely theoretical. The purpose of this constructivist grounded theory study was to examine how mental health practitioners respond to the challenges of historical trauma at the community and society levels, and to explore the functions that professional counselors can assume in collective historical trauma interventions. Intensive interviews were conducted with 12 mental health practitioners who had firsthand experience delivering community-based and/or society-level mental health interventions for historical trauma.
The study shed light on six empowering processes that manifested across the various historical trauma interventions delivered by the participants. These empowering processes were: (a) holding the space; (b) naming the problematic; (c) revisiting history; (d) decolonizing trauma and healing; (e) mobilizing and building capacity; and (f) translating awareness, knowledge, and skills into action. Each of the six empowering processes seemed to promote mindful engagement by facilitating meaning in context and purposeful action. Mindful engagement seemed to enable people to transition from a state of disconnection to connection and eventually to action. All six empowering processes are consistent with the scope of practice and the knowledge and skills of mental health counselors. The implications of the findings for counselors and counselor educators and recommendations for future research are discussed
Analysis of Mothers’ Parenting Consistency: Associations with Children’s Adjustment
While robust literature exists on the association between positive and negative parenting with child outcomes, less is known about the nature of parenting’s consistency in this relationship. This study sought to examine the relationship between valence and consistency of parenting, and to determine whether consistency is associated with child adjustment independent of valence. Data were collected from 167 mothers and their toddler-aged child. Participation involved two time points, 1 year apart. At each time point, mothers’ observational data were obtained via videotape of designed interactions between mother and toddler, as well as survey data from mothers. Bivariate correlations and multiple regressions were used to examine 1) parenting’s consistency over time, and 2) whether the direction of inconsistency moderated the relationship between inconsistency on child behavior problems. Characterization of genes involved in Type IV Chromatic Acclimation in Synechococcus RS9916
Marine cyanobacteria of the genus Synechococcushave light harvesting complexes composed of the phycobiliproteins phycoerythrin I and phycoerythrin II. Synechyococcussp RS9916 is capable of altering the ratio of blue-light absorbing phycourobilin to green-light absorbing phycoerythrobilin ligated to these phycoerythrin proteins through a process known as Type IV Chromatic Acclimation (CA4). During CA4, the mpeZ, unk10and fciCgenes are upregulated under blue light, and these three genes are responsible for increasing the phycourobilin content ligated to phycoerythrin I and II. The role of fciCas a transcription activator of mpeZ, andunk10 genes is explored using knockout and overexpression mutants. Early Voting Versus Election Day Voting: Identifying Individual Indicators of Election Stage Participation in Louisiana Elections, 2015-2016
Abstract
Does early voting advance the democratic process in achieving political equality? Does it create more equity in the representativeness of an electorate? According to rational choice and economic theory, the expanded opportunity to vote should reduce an individual’s cost to vote, thus resulting in higher voter turnouts where traditionally marginalized voters will take advantage of early voting opportunities.
This research conducts an individual-level analysis of more than five-million voter cases over four consecutive Louisiana statewide elections of all individuals who voted in each of the elections from 2015 to 2016. These elections include the 2016 U.S. presidential election, a gubernatorial primary, a gubernatorial runoff, and a U.S. Senate runoff election. It seeks to find individual indicators of a voter’s choice between early voting and election day voting and whether or not early voting creates a mobilization effect or a convenience effect in voter turnout in Louisiana elections. Variables employed in the four population datasets are: sex, age, race, and partisan registration. In addition to the four statewide population data sets, a survey of 1,902 voters who voted in the Louisiana 2016 U.S. presidential election was conducted to capture the variables: level of education, household income, marital status, and political party identification. Five binary regression analyses reveal that contrary to rational choice theory, a convenience effect manifests where sex, age, race, party registration, and level of education are all significant indicators in early voting. The best explanation of this phenomena is that political behavior is more complicated than economic behavior
A Red River City During War: Shreveport, Louisiana\u27s Experiences During World War II
This project provides research that details Shreveport, Louisiana’s experience during World War II. A physical exhibit at the Spring Street Museum and a digital exhibit display Shreveport’s World War II history, based on research conducted for this thesis. Based on a combination of archival collections, and Shreveport Times articles, the project tracks Shreveport communities and the contributions to war efforts from the broader community and local industry. Shreveport’s involvement in World War II began with the Louisiana Maneuvers in 1941. Support for the war continued with heavy metals manufacturing such as the production of shells at the J.B. Beaird Company and community support of war financing, among other aspects. Furthermore, Shreveport trained pilots at Centenary College and collaborated with the bomber training base at Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier City, Louisiana. This project argues that smaller communities played essential roles in supporting the nation during the Second World War
A Study on the Regulation of Mitochondrial Biogenesis and Gluconeogenesis in S. cerevisiae
Budding yeast has been used as a powerful model organism to study the network that communicate functions of nucleus, cytoplasm and mitochondria. Depending upon environmental cues, yeast cells regulate their metabolic programming, for example, presence of glucose repress utilization of alternate carbon source to produce energy. This phenomenon is called carbon catabolite repression, which is relieved when glucose is limiting, and alternate carbon source utilization is achieved by an increase in mitochondrial biogenesis (oxidative catabolism) and the upregulation of TCA cycle and gluconeogenesis. Most of genes involved in alternate carbon source utilization are encoded in the nucleus and undergo tight control to fine tune metabolic requirements.
In this study, we have used biochemical, genetic, and molecular biology approaches to understand carbon source dependent regulation of mitochondrial biogenesis and gluconeogenesis in yeast. In Chapter I, we show that casein kinase I protein Hrr25 negatively regulates Puf3 by mediating its phosphorylation to support mitochondrial biogenesis under low glucose conditions. In the presence of glucose, Puf3 (mRNA binding protein) specifically binds to many mRNAs encoding mitochondrial proteins for their target degradation. On switching to a non-fermentable carbon source, Puf3 is hyperphosphorylated which coorelates with increased mitochondrial biogenesis. Hrr25 inactivates Puf3 by phosphorylating it, which makes Hrr25 a positive regulator of mitochondrial biogenesis.
In Chapter II, we characterized the function of a new zinc-cluster transcription factor, Gsm1, which has redundant functions with Cat8 in supporting cell growth on non-fermentable carbon source. Gsm1 regulates expression of gluconeogenic genes (FBP1, PCK1), genes involved in transport of metabolites into mitochondria (SFC1, YAT1), and genes involved in other cellular pathways. The reduction in Gsm1 target gene expression correlates with growth defects of gsm1∆ cat8∆ strain, and overexpression of GSM1 suppresses growth defects of cat8∆ strain on lactate medium.
In Chapter III, we determined the function of mitochondrial proteins, Aim11 and Iai11, which are transcriptionally regulated by Fkh1/2 transcription factors. In the presence of glucose, AIM11 is negatively regulated by mRNA binding protein, Puf3. Cells carrying deletion of AIM11 and IAI11 have severe growth defects on lactate medium which coorelates with reduction in mitochondrial proteins in aim11∆ iai11∆ cells

“A Matter of Personal Pride”: How African American Football All-Stars Exposed Bigotry in New Orleans, including Didactic Considerations and Lesson Plans
Throughout African American history, sport has played a major role in promoting integration and full participation in American society beyond the playing fields or courts. In the 1960s, after the first wave of African American athletes entering the white-dominated collegiate and professional sports leagues, active forms of protest against racial inequality in the US became gradually more relevant. Though in relatively small numbers, some African American athletes across various sports have used their privileged situation to voice the need for a revision of the system which has failed to represent and serve their people throughout American history.
This paper focuses on the boycott of the American Football League (AFL) All-Star Game in New Orleans after African American ball players experienced racial discrimination in the Crescent City. Their decisive action led the league officials to move the game to Houston, but, of course, also impacted New Orleans’ reputation and prestige in a rapidly changing America. Through an analysis of newspaper discourse, this diploma thesis attempts to reconstruct how public opinion about this incident was shaped. Moreover, it will be discussed how the boycott impacted race relations in New Orleans and how the protest became a part of public memory in recent years
