Chaos and Control
Get PDFMy anxiety, compulsions, and drive to control my surroundings inspires my work and at times hinders my process. I want to control every aspect of life, and the system of marks are symbolic of this. Printmaking permits me to express the area between control and lack of control, as the processes can be revised from beginning to end. My prints are composed of symbolic marks, which I create from objects that represent my compulsions and spiraling thoughts. The repetition of this indirect medium mimics my compulsive behaviors.
I convey repetitive motion, obsessive thoughts, and actions within my prints by overlapping and duplicating marks. I break down the system and reconstruct it attempting to embrace chaos and concurrently impose control. I want the viewer to appreciate my work on a formal level while offering a glimpse into my chaos, the overwhelming complexity of my obsessions, and view of contemporary culture
The Music of Ordinary Objects

Various aquatic sounds are to be recorded, acoustically analyzed, and digitally manipulated in order to ultimately create a musical composition with these elements as its basis. This work will make use of digital processing expertise amongst the Physics faculty and digital audio workstation expertise amongst the Music faculty, as well as individual creativity to produce an innovative effort in music
Final Vestiges of Existence: The Survival and Protection of Cemeteries as Landscapes of Grieving and Cultural Memory in Louisiana
Get PDFIn many contexts, cemeteries are an afterthought, both in terms of their design and situation in the landscape as well as in terms of what to do when they are encountered during development or other activities. How these sites have been managed and treated, at least historically, often has been a function of who is buried in them. In such situations, considerations regarding the preservation or protection of marginalized peoples’ final resting places were often nonexistent and, consequently, these sites were violently erased from the landscape. Indeed, archaeological evidence has recently demonstrated substantial deviations in practice from de jure legal protections that often appear to occur along class and racial lines. Such acts of landscape structural violence in the New Orleans area are the subject of this dissertation. Through a review of archival sources, archaeological evidence, and legal mandates, including federal legislation like NAGPRA, this research examines the evolution of cemetery site protections in Louisiana over time, in part to track the ebbs and flows of de jure versus de facto cemetery protections as well as the causation for divergences of these categories. Recent cemetery protection laws can be effective tools for unmarked cemeteries, especially when coupled with ancient concepts of land use. However, these legal protections must be coupled with effective community involvement to correct the history of unequal treatment of cemeteries in the past

Effective Patient-Provider Communication and Perceived Quality of Care among Current Smokers
No full textSmoking tobacco ranks as the leading cause of bodily disease and the number one preventable cause of death among adults in the US. Despite medical and public health advancement, such as screening and treatment of tobacco use, disparities in the quality of health care still exist. Quality healthcare, considered the assessment and provision of effective and safe care, reflected in a culture of excellence, resulting in the attainment of optimal or desired health, improves patient trust and health outcomes. Establishing a culture of excellence includes improving patient provider communication, an important variable in patient centered care. Patients that experience effective patient-provider communication have better recovery habits, mindsets, and health outcomes. Thus, poor quality of healthcare directly can effect smoking cessation efforts. This study examined the association between measures of effective patient-provider communication and perceived quality of care among current smokers.
Using a cross-sectional study design, we examined nationally represented data from the 2017, 2018, 2019 Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS). Perceived quality of health care was determined by respondents rating their health care in the past twelve months as excellent, very good, good, fair, or poor. Measures of patient-provider communication included how often respondents reported providers: always listened carefully, explained things, showed respect, spent enough time, and involved them in joint decision-making Current smokers were defined as participants who reported smoking 100 cigarettes in their entire life that currently smoke some days or every day. Descriptive statistics included age, gender, race, income, education, and sexual orientation. Chi-square analysis determined differences between respondents who reported excellent quality of health care and respondents who reported satisfactory or below quality of healthcare. Logistic regression determined the relationship between perceived quality of care and patient-provider communication variables after adjusting for covariates.
Among the 1,481 participants included in this study, majority reported between 51- 60 years old (29%), female (54%), heterosexual (87%), white (54%), with greater than a high school diploma (62%), and an annual income \u3c 20K (31%). It is a long-standing goal for interactive experiences to dynamically adapt their textual output based on the user or player\u27s choices and predilections, but to account for this vast possibility space requires an amount of authoring that is frequently untenable, especially for small studios. Advances in machine learning have produced incredible progress in the field of Natural Language Generation (NLG). Though this produces impressive surface level text, it does so without an internal representation that can be reasoned over previous game states, resulting in output with deep local coherence and low global coherence. Kati attempts to provide the best of both worlds by allowing authors to author configurable text snippets.
