Ecological Factors Influencing Population Dynamics of the Mississippi Sandhill Crane, Grus canadensis pulla
Get PDFMy dissertation encompasses three studies involving ecological factors influencing the Mississippi sandhill crane (Grus canadensis pulla) population at Mississippi Sandhill National Wildlife Refuge. To examine influences on the historical population I studied trends in nesting, number of chicks fledged annually, and their environmental and biotic drivers during 1991-2018. I expected precipitation to be positively associated with population measures and drought, extreme heat, and predation to be inversely related to population measures. To examine the influence of current habitat food production on the crane population I quantified measures of production in 2018 and 2019 and their relationship to time since an area was burned and crane population dynamics from 1991-2019. I expected measures of habitat food production to be positively associated with crane population measures and inversely related to time since burn. To examine the relationship between land cover, predation, and crane population I used geographic information system (GIS) analysis to classify land cover characteristics and relate those to crane population dynamics and predator trapping during 2018, 2016, 2014, and 2012. I expected to discover a decrease in chick fledging in areas with more edge habitat due to increased predation risk associated with habitat edges. Population size, number of nests, and number of chicks fledged annually increased significantly from 1991-2019. Total population size was positively related to nesting season precipitation, while the number of chicks fledged annually was negatively related to number of extreme heat days from June to August and estimates of bobcat occurrence. The number of chicks fledged annually occurred with approximately equal frequency across management units burned at different times prior to nesting. Herbaceous production bore no relationship to time since burn or arthropod production. Nesting was positively associated with orthopteran density, but number of wild-hatched chicks fledged annually was unrelated to the production of vegetation or arthropods. I detected no increase in predation related to habitat edge effect. The results indicate that both biotic and abiotic factors drive population dynamics on the refuge and suggest that continued attention to prescribed burns and predator removal is necessary for the establishment of a self-sustaining wild population in the future

I will mention how with music videos some different rules apply as compared to a narrative film, especially considering the final product is technically client work for the music artist. Additionally, I will go over the post-production process, being that it was my first time incorporating VFX into my workflow. The reflection gives insight to the overall aesthetic and practical choices that went into the final image, how me and Yaszmine the Sun Queen portrayed her persona with “perfume allure” and camp in mind with how she hopes to portray herself and her brand. Lastly, I discuss future hopes and dreams for the future after finishing seven years of film school
Mapping the Impacts of Political Risk in Corporate Finance: A Firm-Level Diversification and Debt-Maturity Perspective
Get PDFIn the first chapter, using political corruption conviction data from the U.S. Department of Justice, I examine the impact of local corruption on firms’ debt maturity structure while exploring both demand-side and supply-side explanations. My results support the demand-side story and indicate that firms located in high corruption areas utilize less short-term debt to mitigate liquidity and refinancing risks. Consistent with this, I find the effect is more pronounced among firms with smaller size, lower asset redeployability, and higher volatility. My findings remain robust to the inclusion of an array of controls expected to influence debt maturity preferences as well as time, industry, and state fixed effects. Moreover, a seemingly unrelated regression approach, instrumental variables regression, propensity score matching, and placebo analyses corroborate my findings. Altogether, my results indicate that firms alter their debt maturity choices in response to local corruption to limit refinancing risk and the uncertainty created by corrupt government officials. In the second chapter, I investigate the effects of firm-level political risk on corporate investments and operating performance. I find that diversified firms are better able than focused firms in mitigating idiosyncratic political risk. Diversified firms accomplish this feat via efficient use of the internal capital market that allows segments to alleviate political risk adversity. When exposed to political risk, diversified firms do not spend more on lobbying and political donations than the focused firms in the subsequent period, implying that diversified firms do not manage political risk politically. The main findings are robust to a battery of endogeneity tests
Ephemeral Existence: Tracing Early Twentieth Century Tattoos and Perceptions of Identity within the New Orleans Police Department Mugshot Collection
Get PDFPeople have long used tattoos as markers of identification. However, there remain limited scholarly studies on the history of tattoos within the city of New Orleans. This thesis argues that through analysis of the tattoos recorded in the New Orleans Police Department Mugshot Collection, it is possible to situate the early twentieth century arrested population within a greater societal context, allowing for the intimate details of individual lives and personal stories to come to the forefront. Through the synthesis of demographic data from the 152 mugshots that pertain to tattooed arrestees, and three case studies on arrestees with patriotic, nautical, and name and initial thematic tattoo designs, this research places tattoos and the narratives of tattooed arrestees within the larger social and historical context of the early twentieth century
Geomorphological responses of Biloxi Marsh platform due to variation in the volume and distribution of marsh-edge shell ridges during cold fronts and tropical storms
Get PDFWetlands in coastal Louisiana account for 37% of total wetlands in the United States, yet account for 90% of the total wetland loss. Recent research shows the percent of Louisiana’s coastal wetland loss is decreasing, likely due to the lack of major hurricanes since 2008. The study area, Biloxi marsh, is located south of Lake Borgne and was formed by progradation of the St. Bernard delta complex. One unique geomorphologic feature of Biloxi marsh is the presence of oyster and clam shells, which wash onto the marsh platform and create shell ridges. Crassostrea virginica is the most common shell found in the area. Shell ridges can act as a buffer against erosion when immobile or suffocate marsh vegetation when mobile. Suffocation of vegetation can lead to the destabilization of the marsh platform due to waves being able to reach farther inland with no aboveground vegetation to dampen energy. The proposed work will build off existing work, examining how the ridges have changed through time. Land loss data will be compared to total area, length, and distribution of shell ridges to analyze if there is a trend, such as the presence of historic storm activity. One question this study hopes to answer is if there are any changes in shell ridge movement and/or erosion during cold front or tropical cyclone season. With this information the city of New Orleans and state of Louisiana will have a better understanding of the life expectancy of Biloxi marsh as it is the main buffer against storms
