Co-localization Analysis of Bivariate Spatial Point Pattern
Get PDFSpatial point pattern analysis investigates the localizations of random events in a defined spatial space usually conveyed in the form of images. Spatial distribution of two types of events observed in these images reflects their underlying interactions, which is the focus of co-localization analysis in spatial statistics. Malkusch et al. (Malkusch, et al., 2012) recently proposed the Coordinate-based Co-localization (CBC) method for co-localization analysis. However, the method did not incorporate edge corrections for point proportions and ignored their correlations over nested incremental observational regions. Hence, it yields false positive results for even complete spatial random distributions. In this research, we propose the new K(r) function Coordinate-based Colocalization (KCBC) method to quantify co-localization of two species by utilizing local bivariate Ripley\u27s K and Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient. Simulation studies are conducted to demonstrate the unbiasedness of the new method. An application to real life data was provided to illustrate its applicability
Victims to Victors: Women Reclaiming Conflict Management in sub-Saharan Africa
Get PDFWomen in sub-Saharan Africa are often viewed as the victims of the conflict around them. This view discredits the hundreds of women who are serving in legislative and executive branches across the region. This research investigates if women in positions of power make more peaceful decisions in times of conflict than their male counterparts. Using negative binomial regression methods this research examines the percentages of women in legislative and executive branches to number of conflict days in a year and number of peace agreements signed. This study found that as the percentage of women in office rise the number of conflict days each year decreases. On the hand, as the percentage of women rise, the number of peace treaties signed decreases as well. These findings align with the literature that women have a different approach to conflict, and that approach leads to significant impacts on conflict levels within their state
Financial Market Integration in Latin America
Get PDFThis dissertation is entitled ’Financial Market Integration in Latin America and consists of two empirical studies. The first chapter is called ’Financial Market Integration between Latin America and the US . This empirical analysis focuses on the comovement between the US and major Latin American countries around free trade agreements. The results show that comovement thus financial integration has increased after the trade agreements for all the countries except for Brazil. The studied sector indices show that countries that have a free trade agreement with the US showed an increase in integration among sectors. The second empirical study is called ’The Effects of the Latin American Integrated Market (MILA) on Firms’ Access to Capital and Ownership Concentration’. This study investigates the impact of the creation of a joint stock exchange between some of the Latin American countries and how this exchange has affected ownership concentration and financial constraints. The results show that ownership concentration decreased on the percentage of ownership on largest and 3 largest shareholders while ownership concentration increased for the 5, 7, and 10 largest shareholders after the creation of MILA. Fine Grained Delta Front Sediment Transport
Get PDFInsights into transformative coastal processes are unlocked though understanding sediment transport mechanisms in fine-grained delta front environments. Movement of fine-grained sediments on delta fronts is not wholly explained through advection settling models. While advection settling models generally assume deposition into a still body, numerical modeling of sediment re-entrainment suggests there may be tidal, wave, and/or non-steady hydrograph influences allowing particles to reach greater distances by altering the decelerating velocity field. This research explores both an advection settling model and a mass conservation Rouse profile model to understand the irreducible delta front processes controlling sediment deposition. Using field data collected on the Wax Lake Delta, Louisiana, USA, the irreducible processes of a fluvially dominated delta are quantified to understand the influences of riverine and coastal processes
