    The Relation between Socioeconomic Status and Neuroanatomy of Language Regions in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

    Socioeconomic status (SES) is defined as a multifaceted index of a person’s financial resources, education, and relative social status and is dictated by parental education, income, and occupation. SES has been known to impact neurocognitive abilities, such as language acquisition and development through distal systems, which includes variations in household income and education. These systems in turn affect language regions in the brain due to disparities in word exposure, exposure to chronic stress, and disparities in the exposure of varying complexity of words, causing language deficits. Language deficits are a core feature of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and several studies demonstrate the atypical anatomy of these core language regions. We hypothesized that similar to findings in typically developing children, higher SES will be associated with larger gray matter volume and cortical thickness of frontal and posterior language regions within the ASD population. We found no significant correlation between SES and cortical language anatomy but found relationships between SES and language ability and/frontal gray matter. These results support the literature concerning causal links between SES and language and offer new insight into the intersection between SES, language, and ASD

    1999 examines a struggling set of siblings at the turn of the millennium. I examine the methods I used to accomplish finishing a live-action version of this short film after abandoning an animated version. I made this film during the COVID-19 pandemic, so the specific challenges that presented will also be highlighted. Also, I briefly touch on my overall experience in Film Production at The University of New Orleans

    Dimensionless Analysis of Trajectories of Cylindrical Objects Dropped into Water in Two Dimensions

    Nondimensionalization is powerful technique and is widely applied in the study of fluid mechanics and engineering because it helps to reduce the number of free parameters, identify the relative size of effects of parameters, and gain a deeper insight of the essential nature of phenomena. The nondimensionalization of 2D theory has been completed by the author (Zhen et.al.,2020) and new dimensionless equations of motion were obtained. In this study, new dimensionless dynamic equations are extended by incorporating new parameters to cope with various environmental conditions. The new dimensionless analysis of dropped cylindrical objects is consisted of four parts. Part 1, the new dimensionless equations of motion for a dropped cylindrical object are presented and validated. Firstly, the importance of force and moment has been analyzed. Secondly, the effects of factors such as trailing edge, drag coefficient, and drop angle on trajectories of dropped objects are systematically investigated. Part 2, turbulent boundary flow is considered to extend the new 2D dimensionless equations of motion for dropped cylinders. The cylinders are assumed to be dropped into the turbulent boundary flow. The effects of trailing edge, drag coefficient, and drop angle on trajectories of dropped object with turbulent boundary flow are investigated. It is found that results with turbulent boundary flow seem to agree with experimental results published in Aanesland (1987). Factors such as trailing edge, drag coefficient, and drop angle persistently show significant effects on features of trajectories. Part 3, various forms of currents are considered to extend the the new 2D dimensionless equations of motion for dropped cylinders. The decreasing exponential current is used to simulate weakening surface current and sinusoidal current is applied to mimic effect of oscillating current. It is found that features of trajectories with uniform current are significant distinguished from those with exponential or sinusoidal currents. Part 4, Gaussian process is implemented in the new 2D dimensionless equations of motion. The effect of randomness on trajectories is investigated by varying the variance of Gaussian process. It is found that variance demonstrates a significant effect on trajectories

    This study reveals how the US Navy’s Landing Ship Tank (LST) of World War II functioned in logistics support roles from the outset of its wartime participation and to a greater degree than many military planners ever envisioned. The ship’s simple design proved so versatile that, within one year of the first LST, the Navy began converting dozens of the ships to Landing Craft Repair Ships (ARL) and other auxiliary classes supporting myriad naval logistics tasks. Both the standard LST and the ARL made significant logistics contributions to the war effort well beyond amphibious assaults

    Throughout Louisiana’s history, from the Louisiana Purchase to present day, the state has well benefited from its economic location. From the Port of New Orleans to Union Pacific railyard, all along the state, Louisiana has possessed its natural resources of the lumber commerce. Beginning in the 1880s to a peak in the 1910s, Louisiana represented a state-wide economic development. This paper argues that Louisiana advancement post-Reconstruction and into this new period of newly commercialized railroad systems made the biggest economic impact on Southwestern Louisiana with one essential economic, lumber. From 1880 to 1925, the lumber industry in Vernon Parish, Louisiana, grew from a small local lumber system to growing resources and shipping all around the country

    Low Impact Development Mitigation for Base Flood Elevation Disparity between Adjacent Properties

    Disputes between adjacent property owners in which new development at higher elevation requirements has caused adverse effects in stormwater drainage towards lower, older developments has recently grown in concern. The difference of elevations between properties causes a faster sheet flow effect that bypasses existing drainage paths in the servitude. The goal of this research is to design a low impact development methodology that encourages detention and redirection back toward the shared drainage boundary. Detention is encouraged through subsurface infiltration, storage and re-direction of the flow path. Infiltration trench simulations using EPA’s SWMM software were used to mirror the new LID design and obtain hydrological outcomes of the study site to confirm initial applicability. The trenches sufficiently reduced peak flows for the site based on various parameters. The next step in completing this research is constructing the new LID system on campus to calibrate and verify the system design
