How a Community Foundation’s Disaster Framework Guided Rapid Pandemic Response
Disasters create opportunities for philanthropy to rebuild equitably by prioritizing the most vulnerable community members in disaster response and addressing existing disparities and structural inequities in the recovery phase. As intermediaries between donors and local communities, community foundations are well-positioned to lead transformational disaster response.
Through its experience with Hurricane Katrina and subsequent disasters in the region, the Greater New Orleans Foundation developed a flexible disaster framework that emphasizes four broad principles — resilience, sustainability, civic participation, and equity — and specific practices in each area to guide rapid and long-term disaster response and preparedness. This article describes how the foundation is applying that framework to respond to COVID-19 and concurrent disasters in ways that mitigate immediate harms while laying the groundwork for an equitable long-term recovery.
Based on a review of organizational documents and interviews with high-level staff involved in disaster grantmaking over the past decade, the article details how the foundation inductively developed its disaster framework through experiences supporting nonprofits and community members after Hurricane Katrina and subsequent disasters. Evaluating Methods to Determine the Maximum Oxygen Consumption by the Gulf Killifish, Fundulus Grandis
Metabolic rate is an essential feature of animal physiology and ecology. The rate of aerobic metabolism, as determined by oxygen consumption rate (MO2), is influenced by a variety of factors, including body size, temperature, and activity levels. Maximum aerobic metabolic rate (MMR) reflects the physiological capacity of an animal for oxygen extraction and utilization. As such, MMR is argued to be an important feature of an animal’s life history. For fish, MMR is frequently estimated as the peak MO2 immediately following an exhaustive chase, although several studies indicate that this value may underestimate MMR. Rather, MMR may be attained during sustained activity or following ingestion of a large meal. In this study, I used intermittent-flow respirometry to quantify MO2 by the Gulf killifish, Fundulus grandis, after chasing, after ingestion of a meal, or during swimming. MMR estimates obtained by the three techniques were repeatable over two trials (r ≥ 0.74). However, MMR estimates after chasing were significantly lower than those obtained during swimming (P = 0.001); MMR estimates after feeding were marginally (P = 0.06) higher than those obtained after chasing and significantly lower than those during swimming (P = 0.02). Additionally, the MMR estimates among methods were uncorrelated with one another (r ≤ 0.55). The results demonstrate that MO2 after an exhaustive chase or during digestion underestimate MMR in this species, and, importantly, such estimates may be poor predictors of inter-individual variation in maximum aerobic metabolism
2022 Quality of Life Survey - Orleans and Jefferson Parishes
The University of New Orleans Survey Research Center (SRC) conducted a live interviewer telephone survey of registered voters in Orleans Parish and Jefferson Parish. These surveys are designed to provide an ongoing picture of how voters view local government services and the general quality of life. They highlight the problems that are of greatest concern to the voters, as well as areas of satisfaction in their parish. The series can also inform the public and officials about specific areas of perceived deterioration or improvement
Facies Analysis of Terrebonne Basin Using Vibracores and CHIRP Seismic Data
This study was conducted in upper and lower Madison Bay as well as Lake Boudreaux in Terrebonne basin located in southcentral Louisiana. This region is part of the recently abandoned Lafourche delta complex (0.6-0.8 kyr). Much of coastal Louisiana is comprised of formerly active delta complexes of the Mississippi River that have undergone subsequent reworking. As more restoration actions are being considered to combat land loss in coastal Louisiana, exploring the framework of a recently abandoned delta complex could aid in these plans. Utilizing core descriptions and CHIRP seismic data, facies analysis was performed to produce cross sections that display the recent depositional history within the region. The facies described construct the profile of a regionally transgressive abandoned delta complex. Growth fault interaction with the shallow stratigraphy was not noted within these three study areas, however, the morphological effects of an abandoned delta complex were observed in each study area
Network Intrusion Detection Using a Deep Learning Approach
Due to the extensive use and evolution in the cyber world, different network attacks have recently increased significantly. Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack has become one of the fatal threats to the Internet, where attackers send massive amounts of packets to the target system to make online systems unavailable to legitimate users. Proper attack detection measurement is crucial to defend against these attacks. This work proposes a deep learning-based model using a contractive autoencoder to detect anomalies. We train our model to learn the normal traffic pattern from the compacted representation of the input data, and then apply a stochastic threshold method to detect the attack. Three renowned IDS datasets have been used for evaluation—CIC-IDS2017, NSL-KDD, and CIC-DDoS2019. We have assessed the results against a basic autoencoder and other deep learning approaches to show our model efficacy. Our results indicate a successful intrusion detection of the proposed method with an accuracy ranging between 93.41% and 97.58% on the CIC-DDoS2019 dataset. Moreover, it achieved an accuracy of 96.08% and 92.45% on NSL-KDD and CIC-IDS2017 datasets, respectively
Girlhood and Engendered Alienation in The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
Utilizing a girls’ studies perspective and materialist feminist lens, this paper seeks to put Carson McCullers’ The Heart is a Lonely Hunter (1940) in conversation with Betty Smith’s A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (1943). Besides being published in the early 1940s, both works feature young girls navigating class struggles, exploring their identities, and struggling against dominant ideologies specific to their time and place. McCullers’ and Smith’s novels depict how a patriarchal, capitalist society imposes upon young women a narrow, misogynistic view of themselves and the women around them—facilitating the social reproduction of oppression and alienation. In depicting these realities of girlhood during the early twentieth-century, these authors established their work as inherently feminist. However, the conversations surrounding these novels must continue to evolve and include topics like unwaged labor, slut-shaming, purity culture, and internalized misogyny, among others
