Development of Models to Predict Highway Fatality Rates: Insight from United States, Southern States, Gulf Mexico States, and Louisiana
Get PDFThis study has two main objectives. First, the impact of various factors on highway fatality rates in the United States (US), Southern States, Gulf Mexico States, and Louisiana are examined. Second, two models are developed to predict fatality rates in the stated regions: highway fatality rate per 1000 drivers and highway fatality rate per 100 million vehicle miles traveled (VMT). Data from 2004-2021 obtained from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics are analyzed using Stepwise Multiple Regression method. The results of this study reveal that road conditions and driving alone are the primary predictors strongly associated with fatality rates. The impact of other factors, such as commute modes, highway expenditure, and transportation employees, is also observed to varying degrees. The predictive models are validated using the Shapiro-Wilk test and normal distribution plots to ensure accuracy. This study\u27s findings will aid decision-makers in allocating resources and improving highway safety in the US

For instance, in the play, Marie Antoinette\u27s Head, the stagnation of civilization and society is explored while time zigzags over two thousand years. The movement of time and epochs is told through a colorful array of costumes, also indicating the growth and evolution of characters in each period. The protagonist, Leonardo, however, remains stuck in 1793. In another of Maxwell\u27s works, the one-man, one-act play Exhausted Paint, the painter Vincent Van Gogh experiences a similar inert characterization. In both works, the costumes are essential to represent the static nature of the characters while also highlighting the change and comedy surrounding them
U.S. Hegemonic Control in Latin America: The 1973 Coup in Chile
Get PDFOn September 11, 1973, the Chilean armed forces staged a coup d’état against their democratically elected and first socialist president, Salvador Allende. The coup ended in Allende’s death and seventeen years of military dictatorship under the auspices of General Augusto Pinochet. Although seemingly a domestic affair, the United States executive branch under the leadership of President Richard Nixon played a significant role in facilitating the coup and it is unlikely the coup would have occurred without U.S. support. While contemporary sources still point to American fears over communist incursion in the western hemisphere as the principal reason for U.S. involvement and support for the coup, the American intelligence and foreign policy community was much more preoccupied with maintaining U.S. hegemony in the western hemisphere and preventing rogue states from challenging that hegemony, especially through free and fair elections. Although this point is discussed in some of the literature on the subject, these works focus mainly on proving U.S. culpability rather than distinguishing the principal reason for its intervention. This paper directly points to the desire to maintain political hegemony in Latin America as the principal reason for intervention, using American declassified source material as the main line of evidence
A New Politics of Black Regality: Zora Neale Hurston and Alice Walker’s Monarchical Method
Get PDFLiterary critics conducting a comparative study of Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God and Alice Walker’s The Color Purple diligently tend to the relationship between the two women, particularly at an intertextual level. This paper sheds light on an important third member of this relationship: Black women readers. An articulation of Black regality, which involves the incorporation of monarchical symbols and titles in characterizations of Black people, provides these readers with political tools poised to liberate Black women from hegemonic male authority and control. Examining the significance of adornment for the self exclusively to combat invisibility, the power of discursive play as a community forming strategy, and the efficacy of public testimony to provide and preserve mobility, this paper pinpoints the key emergences of Black regality cross textually. Then, this paper illustrates how Hurston and Walker’s implementation of Black regality refigures the imperial framework of monarchy aesthetically to envisions modes of self-expression and escape for Black women tethered to domineering men
The Impact of Shoreline Stabilization on Sediment Supply and Ecogeomorphology: Assessing Marsh Response to Altered Wave Energies, Lake Borgne, Louisiana
Get PDFShoreline protection structures are a common response to lateral erosion in marshes, but limited studies exist on how they influence sediment supply and the resulting ecogeomorphology. This study investigates the impacts of marine mattresses, geotextile cages filled with riprap, in Lake Borgne, LA. A field study was conducted during cold front passages at a site with marine mattresses and a proximal control site without, collecting measurements of water depth, wave energy, lateral erosion, sediment accumulation, vegetation, and sediment characteristics. Wetlands with marine mattresses attenuated waves more than their natural marsh edge counterparts, which have limited conditions favorable for sedimentation. However, the lateral position of the marsh was maintained, while the control site eroded at an average rate of 1.7 meters per year. Water content, organic matter, bulk density, salinity, and pH were similar between the sites, but the marine mattress site was lower in elevation and contained finer sediments

I usually only make things with intent. I hardly ever throw anything away or destroy my art. I like the idea of archiving my work as possible artifacts for future generations. Prehistory, archaeology, mass production, and the consumers are my inspiration. Art is all an act of creation. I use various rituals and practices to create. The constant thoughts on alchemy and the personifications of the objects are driving influences. Through sculpting I create a new object in this reality. This object can be personified by simple alterations to the source material, through words, biological features, or accouterments. This has been a common theme throughout art history as a way to make fetish objects, decorations, or toys. The following is an explanation of my method to embrace this tradition and ritual in a long history of art
Auditory Cortical Differences in Children and Adolescents with Chromosome 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome
Get PDFPeople with chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) have a complex neurodevelopmental disorder with severe medical, cognitive, and psychiatric challenges including increased risk for developing a psychotic disorder in adulthood. The origins of this risk are not fully understood but atypical brain development is well documented. Hearing loss is also common in this population, yet little is known about the interaction between medical symptoms such as chronic ear infections and hearing loss with brain development in regions implicated in the etiopathology of schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SCZ). The present study used structural magnetic resonance imaging to measure auditory cortical regions of interest in relation to diagnosis, history of hearing impairment, and psychological measures in children and adolescents with 22q11.2DS in comparison to healthy controls. We found both decreases and, unexpectedly, increases in auditory cortical regions in the 22q11.2DS sample. These findings provide insight into potential etiopathology of communication and psychiatric disorders in this population
