An Exploration of Emotional Intelligence and the Professional Competency of Academic Support Student Affairs Professionals
Get PDFThe present study investigated the relationship between the Emotional Intelligence of student affairs practitioners and their professional competency. 248 academic support professionals completed the Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQi 2.0) to measure their emotional intelligence. Using the competencies identified by the 2015 joint publication on student affairs competencies by the American College Personnel Association (ACPA) and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), participants provided a self-rating of their attainment of the ten professional competencies. Demographic data, years of experience in the field, educational background, and professional development opportunities were also measured. A hierarchical multiple regression was run for each of the professional competencies to create a predictive model. Emotional intelligence was found to be a significant predictor for eight of the ten professional competencies. While years of experience was significant for nearly all competencies, educational background was only a significant predictor for four competencies and professional development was not a significant predictor in any model. Notably, the Social Justice and Inclusion competency was the only predictor where years of experience was not significant nor were the other covariates. The only significant predictor of Social Justice and Inclusion competency attainment was the interpersonal emotional intelligence realm including empathy and social responsibility. This study provides implications for graduate preparation programs, professional development opportunities, professional associations, supervisors and university leaders, and human resources

Assessing Math Motivation, Educational Expectancy, and Grades in Corequisite Coursework to Predict Outcomes in College Algebra
Get PDFThe lack of preparation and math motivation are obstacles for new students entering higher education. Students who are underprepared in math often lack the skills and motivation to succeed in College Algebra. The purpose of this research study is to assess student math self-efficacy, task value, intrinsic value, educational expectancy, and grades in corequisite coursework to predict outcomes in College Algebra. Using binary logistic regression, the researcher examined motivational factors and corequisite course grades to determine their impact on student success in College Algebra. The primary objective of the present study was to examine college students’ math achievement in College Algebra within the framework of the Expectancy-Value Model of achievement motivation theory to determine the correlation between students’ motivational beliefs and their final math outcomes. Data was collected for students enrolled in College Algebra at The University of New Orleans and Southeastern Louisiana Universality.
Results showed math self-efficacy, educational expectation, and corequisite grades to be significant predictors of final outcomes in College Algebra. Task value, intrinsic value, gender, and race were insignificant factors in predicting final algebra outcomes. With regards to student achievement, this study’s findings reveal that students perceived self-beliefs about their ability to do well in math related activities and their general beliefs about eventual college graduation and beyond significantly impact the likelihood of passing College Algebra

Get PDFIn this paper I analyze the rhetoric of the Cloud of Unknowing by an anonymous fourteenth-century English Catholic mystic. First, I situate the Cloud in its tradition, both spiritual and rhetorical. Then, after analyzing the linguistic arts employed, I engage in a sustained examination of the Cloud’s rhetorical technique. Ultimately, I conclude that the author of the Cloud succeeds in his rhetorical goals, even if some of his strategies are less successful than he perhaps believes, and that he does so through the use of concrete language and an appeal to the ethos of Christian monastic friendship
Termites, Bully Boys, and the Architect of Search & Destroy: An Assessment of General William E. DePuy as MACV J-3 and Commander of the 1st Infantry Division, Republic of Vietnam, 1964-67
Get PDFAs Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations (J-3) at MACV from 1964-1966, General William DePuy served as the main architect of the campaign strategy implemented by General William Westmoreland in fighting both VC and NVA units during the earliest and most critical years of the Vietnam War. Following his role at MACV, DePuy assumed command of the 1st Infantry Division in March 1966 where he exhibited a distinct command philosophy and transformed the organizational culture of the “Big Red One” through a series of directives and tactical innovations. Most historians are critical of Westmoreland’s chosen strategy as well as DePuy’s operational framework. This thesis examines DePuy’s contributions as MACV J-3 and the operational level of war of the Big Red One under his command where strategy is translated into military action. It argues that despite the war’s final outcome, DePuy understood the Communist threat and, also, simultaneously implemented an appropriate counterinsurgency campaign to address that threat

No full textThe peace of Fuji is a copper etching on a 9inx6in copper plate depicting a fictional area of Japan. The piece is made by doing multiple rounds of dunking the copper into acid to create said image to print. The copper plate is inked and after have some of the ink removed for the printing. Then a 11inx8in paper is dampened and put on top of the copper plate. Once done, it is sent through the printing press to make said piece. Peace of Fuji is my version of Utopia, where you can find yourself in peace, away from any city and the loudness that comes with it

No full textData in this folder are produced by a SoFarOcean Spotter wave buoy deployed along the south arm of the Great Salt Lake, near Antelope Island State Park from the period of July 13, 2021 through June 28, 2022, in relatively shallow water, approximately 1.6m.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Water depths for #1328 (Miera Spit) started at ~1.7 m, but dropped rapidly to 0.9 m on July 15, 2021 and dropped further to ~0.4 m on August 17, 2021. The timing of these rapid water depth changes matches the timing of buoy location changes when the anchor was dragged inshore by waves. When buoy #1328 (Miera Spit) was retrieved at the end of the study period, it was partially beached with its ballast chain touching the bed. We surmised that data quality was suspect after the second abrupt change in water depth on August 17th, 2021 when the anchor was moved.https://scholarworks.uno.edu/salt_lake/1001/thumbnail.jp
Working Memory and Language Associations in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder
Get PDFAutism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impairments in social communication and interaction, with repetitive behaviors or specialized interests. A range of language abilities is seen in ASD, with some having typical abilities and others severe impairments. Working memory (WM) deficits have also been found in some children with ASD. In typically developing, as well as non-ASD children with language deficits a strong relationship has been found between WM and language abilities. Although both language and WM deficits are often seen in ASD, the relationship between these deficits has been underexplored. The objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between WM and language in children with ASD. Aim 1 looks at associations between WM and language abilities in a sample of children with ASD. It was hypothesized that there would be a relationship between these abilities, such that children with WM deficits would also show impairments in language and stronger WM would be associated with better language abilities. Results indicated that children with WM deficits showed impairments in language, and there was a relationship between WM and better communication skills. In Aim 2, neuroanatomical correlates of WM and connectivity with language regions in a sample of children with ASD with and without language deficits were examined. It was hypothesized that children with language impairments would have smaller volume of a WM region and that this region would have reduced connections with language-related cortical regions compared to children without language impairments. Results indicated a relationship between language and brain volume of these regions. However, reduced connections between the language and WM regions were identified in a severe language group. Additionally, we found evidence of associations between language scores and these connections
