The film was written, directed, and edited by Leon Gisclair, who also authored the subsequent reflection on the film’s production and his time at the University of New Orleans. The film explores the themes of love, grief, and reconciliation in its twenty-two minute runtime while also serving as a proof-of-concept for a television pilot

    Modified Anti-Inflammatory Drugs with Glioblastoma Cell Line Cytotoxicity

    This study focuses on investigating modified anti-inflammatory compounds and their potential cytotoxic effects on Glioblastoma cell lines. Three compounds, DJ14, DJ21, and DJ291, were the primary compounds of interest. All three compounds conformed with Lipinski’s rule of five, suggesting favorable pharmacokinetics. The IC50 for LN-229 treated with DJ14, 21, and 291 are 5.097 µM, 3.229 µM, and 0.9656 µM. These values are substantially lower than the FDA-approved chemotherapeutic drug for Glioblastoma Multiforme, Temozolomide. From the three compounds, DJ291, a modified aspirin analog effect on mTOR signaling pathway was investigated via related proteins: pAMPK, p-P70S6k, and p62. The presence of p62 bands insinuated that DJ291 may inhibit autophagy, but the absence of cleaved caspase3 bands means that apoptosis is not the targeted cell death. Future studies aim to optimize HPLC detection, in vivo route of administration and dosage, and determine the mechanism of action for DJ291

    Mission Possible: Motivating Students Toward High School Completion

    Celebrated each spring, high school graduation yields many positive, long-term impacts on an individual’s life. These include better overall health, lower reliance on government resources, higher lifetime earnings, and eligibility for post-secondary educational opportunities (Levin et al., 2007; Rowley et al., 2011; McFarland et al., 2019; Uretsky, 2019). While the benefits of high school completion are clear, each year hundreds of students fail to meet diploma requirements. Autonomous motivation, both intrinsic motivation and integrated regulation, drives engagement in activities perceived as relevant to desired outcomes and is closely associated with positive academic performance, school persistence (Deci et al., 1991; Vallerand et al., 1997; Hayenga & Corpus, 2010; Schurmann & Quaiser-Pohl, 2022). Recognizing the positive effects of autonomous motivation on student achievement and persistence, Self-Determination Theory (SDT) describes the psychological, innate need for feelings of competency, relatedness, and autonomy that when met, build the autonomous motivation of students. Previous research has identified mastery approach goals (Daumiller & Zarrinabadi, 2021; Froiland & Oros, 2012; Froiland & Worrell, 2016; Froiland et al., 2014), scaffolding feedback (Guo & Zhou, 2021; Zinser et al., 1982), and supportive environments (Deci et al., 1991; Ryan & Deci, 2000) as factors capable of augmenting the autonomous motivation of students. While research has established the connection between these educator practices and students’ autonomous motivation, there was a gap in the existing literature around how building leaders or school administrators guide and support their staff to engage in these practices with students. Using Yin’s (2018) embedded case study design, this study answers Which practices do educators perceive as inspiring motivation in secondary students to persist toward high school completion? and how do educators engage in practices which foster the autonomous motivation of their secondary students

    Oil Price Volatility vs. Sustainable Investment: Impact on Global Dividends

    Sustainability has become a central concern for businesses and investors worldwide, yet obstacles arise when investors\u27 perceptions change, and regulatory policies hinder businesses from committing to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG). This study examines the impact of (ESG) performance on dividend policy across six major sectors—Financial, Industrial, Technology, Healthcare, Basic Materials, and Utilities—in fourteen countries across the Americas, Europe, and Asia (USA, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Turkey, India, Japan, China, UK, Germany, Italy, France, and South Korea) from 2010 to 2022. We explore the relationship between ESG scores and dividend policy utilizing a comprehensive dataset from publicly traded companies. We focus on three key dividend measures: dividend per share, dividend payout ratio, and dividend growth. We assess the differential impact of overall ESG performance and individual ESG pillars (Environmental, Social, and Governance) on firms of varying sizes, small, medium, and large—within each sector. Robust econometric techniques such as Two-Stage Least Squares (2SLS), Generalized Method of Moments (GMM), and Difference-in-Differences (DID) models are employed to address potential endogeneity issues and validate findings during the economic shock of COVID-19. Our results consistently show that ESG performance positively influences dividend policies; however, the effects vary by sector and firm size. Generally, medium and large firms benefit the most. This study offers detailed information about how the ESG score affects dividend policy across diverse sectors globally. It provides insightful analyses for managers, investors, and legislators who want to comprehend how sustainable investments affect business financial choices

    Lower Bound on Preserved Flood Duration in Fluvial Bedform Stratigraphy (experimental dataset)

    This data is collected to assess the role of hydrograph timescale relative to dune migration on the preservation of cross sets in the stratigraphic record. The data presented here are of dune evolution under steady-state conditions, as well as three hydrographs of the same magnitude but varying timescales. Methodology: We collected data from four experiments tracking bedform evolution in a 22-m-long, 0.56-m-wide, 0.9-m-deep flume at the University of New Orleans Dynamics of Sedimentation laboratory. We conducted an equilibrium experiment (discharge value 0.027 m3/s) and three flood experiments, which were characterized by a symmetrical flood wave. In all flood experiments, the flood magnitude increased linearly from the baseline condition (0.027 m3/s) and peaked at the same flood magnitude (0.044 m3/s), which was held for 5 minutes, and then the flood magnitude decreased linearly to the same baseline condition. We only varied flood durations across these experiments, and we label the four experiments as the “equilibrium,” “fast,” “intermediate” and “slow” flood experiments. The fast, intermediate, and slow flood experiments had a total flood duration of 25 min (Tf, fast = 12.5 min), 69 min (Tf, mid = 34.5 min), and 191 min (Tf, slow = 85.5 min), respectively. In all experiments, we recirculated water and sediment, and held the flow depth constant at 0.152 m as the experimental apparatus allowed a more precise control of uniform flow under varying discharge without stage increase. We measured topography using a 3D laser scanning system along an approximately 5.5-m-long test section, located 5.3 m downstream of the inlet, with scans repeated approximately every 165 seconds. We analyzed bed topography for the 2D centerline profile at 1 mm horizontal resolution. For each experiment, we selected the timespan to contain the same duration of pre-flood and post-flood baseflow conditions.     Financial Risk in a Changing Climate

    Essay 1: Given the missing-not-at-random (MNAR) nature of carbon emissions figures under the voluntary disclosure regulator environment, this research imputes synthetic emissions figures for both disclosing and non-disclosing publicly traded US firms, using an IV approach adapted for sample bias correction. The forward-observing implied cost of equity capital measure is consistently higher for carbon-intensive firms regardless of disclosure decision. This higher cost found in the large swath of high-emitting firms reduces the net present value of green transition investments, thus fueling existing research on the counterproductive natures of capital allocation in efforts to reduce corporate pollution. Contrary to emerging research, the paper attributes the cause to a climate-change risk factor due to high-elasticity constraints, rather than the sole impact of sustainable investing. Essay 2: This research explores the risk transmission impacts of China’s carbon emissions, green energy indices, and traditional energy and commodity indices. Supplement analysis observes impacts within China’s major firms as well as the regulative differences in its Emission Trading Systems when compared to those in developed economies. Utilizing the Vector Autoregressive (VAR) model and an innovative quantile connectedness framework, the research uncovers a substantial degree of cross-market risk transmission during the ongoing recession in China, exceeding 80%. The increased volatility coincides with the volatility in oil and energy and attributed from the shocks from global supply chain disruptions, Russian-Ukrainian conflict, and post pandemic recovery
