Course Description 
This class provides a general introduction to scientific method, experimental and 
statistical design, scientific writing, and psychological research methodology.  Everyone 
is required to participate in a simple, but unique research project. The results of this 
project are to be written up in an APA-style paper and presentations of research findings 
will be presented to the class. This class is comprised of 1 day of lecture and one day of 
lab.  
 
Student Learning Outcomes 
By the end of the course you should be able to: 
1) Describe the characteristics of science  
2) Describe observational, correlational and experimental research techniques 
3) Choose the appropriate statistical technique to analyze data from each of the 
above techniques 
4) Properly format and prepare an APA-style paper 
5) Produce a PowerPoint presentation of simple research findings 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Course Requirements 
1) Attendance: The University of New Orleans requires class attendance to be recorded. 
Attendance will be taken each class.  It is your responsibility to sign the attendance sheet 
at the beginning of class. If you leave during class, I will mark you as absent, even if you 
signed the attendance sheet or were present for roll call. I will allow students 5 absences 
without penalty. For each absence beyond 5, the consequence is the loss of 1 point for 
each absence beyond 5. At the end of the semester, if you have perfect attendance, you 
will receive a bonus of 5 points added to your total points; if you miss 1-2 classes, a 
bonus of 2 points will be added to your total points; if you miss 3 or more classes, you 
will not receive any bonus points.  
 
2) Quizzes:  There will be one quiz for each chapter (14 quizzes total). Each quiz will be 
given on the day that we begin that chapter. It is your responsibility to be present in class. 
I will NOT let you take the quiz if you are late to class or miss class, unless you can 
provide a documentable reason as to why you missed (i.e., doctor’s note). Each take quiz 
is worth 10 points (total of 140 points).  
 
3) Homework assignments: There will be 10 Homework assignments. They will be due 
at the beginning of class. Homework assignments are directly tied to various components 
of the term paper. These assignments break down the term paper into manageable steps 
and ensure that the term paper is completed in a timely manner. Each homework 
assignment is a first draft of a specific section of the term paper. Each homework 
assignment is worth 10 points (total of 100 points). 
 
Late homework assignments will be reviewed but will receive no grade. These 
homework assignments ensure that you are on the right track with your term paper, for 
that reason, late homework assignments will still be reviewed even though they will not 
be graded. Homework assignments are worth more points than the final paper. Do not 
skip the homework assignments! 
 
4) In-Class Assignments/Labs: There will be 10 in-class assignments or labs.  These 
will be completed on Thursday during lab time. Students must be in class and contribute 
to the completion of the assignment to receive a grade. Students who are absent on the 
day that an in-class project is assigned will receive a 0. THERE WILL BE NO MAKE-
UPS FOR IN-CLASS ASSIGNMENTS. Each in-class assignment is worth 10 points 
(total of 100 points). 
 
5) Exams: Exams will cover both lecture and reading material. There will be 3 exams, 
worth 100 points each.  The exams will consist of short answer, essay questions, and 
multiple choice.  Each of the tests will include questions taken from both lectures and 
reading assignments. There are NO dropped exams! 
 
MAKE-UPS: If there are extenuating circumstances regarding why you missed an 
exam, please come see me.  
 
6) Research Project/Paper: During the first week of class, you will be asked to begin 
thinking about ideas for a research project. As a class, we will discuss everyone’s 
interests. As a class we will develop one standard questionnaire that encompasses all of 
the research topics, to be administered to various classes at UNO. All students are 
required to write an 8 to 10 page research paper describing their research project. This 
assignment will be described in more detail in class and a separate hand out will be given 
describing the requirements.  The 8-10 page requirement does not include the title page, 
or references.  With the exception that all margins must be 1 inch, the format of the paper 
must comply with APA guidelines. The research project/paper is worth 100 points.  
 
Most students have little experience writing research papers. The writing center on 
campus can provide valuable assistance with organizing, developing, and writing term 
papers. Students are strongly encouraged to contact the Writing Center at 280-7159 (rm. 
334 Liberal Arts Bldg) for assistance writing their research paper and completing 
homework assignments. 
 
7) In-class Presentation: This course contains a core component in oral communication. 
Satisfactory performance in this core will satisfy the requirement of demonstrating 
competence in oral communication. All students are required to participate in a formal 
power point presentation of their projects in class.  Each student will describe his/her own 
specific hypothesis and results associated with it. Power point presentations will last 
approximately 5 minutes.  Failure to complete the presentation requirement results in an 
automatic F in the class, no exceptions.  The format of the presentation will be discussed 
in class. The presentation is worth 50 points.

Course Overview 
The roots of modern psychological thought and methodology are explored in this course. We 
will trace these roots from their origins in philosophy and the natural sciences through the early 
schools of psychology to its current form. In addition to learning about the major schools and 
systems of psychology (e. g., Functionalism, Structuralism, Behaviorism, etc.), we will explore 
how cultural and political forces shape psychological theories. We will also examine the lives 
and works of the men and women whose work created psychology's foundation. 
 
Student Learning Outcomes  
1. To develop an understanding of the various processes of scientific development and change. 
2. To be able to articulate the historical context in which the field of psychology emerged. 
3. Describe how current psychological thought may be influenced by the historical development 
and context of the field. 
4. Demonstrate an awareness of major figures and schools of thought in psychology 
5. Describe recent changes in the field and the history of some of the more recent sub-

Course Requirements

3. Exams: Four exams will be given during the semester, each worth 100 points and one 
cumulative final worth 100 points. Exams will be a combination of multiple choice, 
matching, short answer/essay and will cover all relevant lecture material and assigned 
readings. Makeup exams will only be allowed under certain circumstances: 1) you have 
contacted me on the day that the exam was given and 2) you have a documentable excuse as 
to why you have missed. All grades will be posted on Moodle.  
 
4. Research Paper: Each student will write an original biographical research paper of a 
psychologist. The research paper will address the following areas: (a) their life, (b) the ideas, 
events, and people that influenced them, (c) their specific contributions to the science or 
practice of psychology, and (d) what happened to their legacy contribution in subsequent 
years/generations.  Papers will be submitted in APA format and be approximately 10-12 
typed pages.  Paper is worth 100 points. Penalty for late papers is 10 points per day.

Research Biography of a Psychologist 
Individual Project:  You will write a biography of an eminent person in the history of 
psychology.  Select a person (living or not) from the period of 1879 to the present.  This person 
should have a Ph.D. in Psychology. Your job is to learn everything you can about the person and 
his or her “legacy contribution.”  You also should learn about the major social and political 
events that occurred before and during the life of your person.  Why?  Because people rarely 
create ideas independently of their social and political context.   
Areas to address in your biography are: 
 (a) their life (2-3 pgs) 
 (b) the ideas, events, and people that influenced them (2-3 pgs) 
 (c) their specific contributions to the science or practice of psychology (2-3 pgs) 
 (d) what happened to their legacy contribution in subsequent years/generations (2-3 pgs) 
To do well with this assignment, you must begin your research immediately.  Locate and read the 
best available biography of your person.  Locate and read articles written about or by your 
person.  Trace the history of your person’s legacy contribution by searching for articles 
influenced by or written about them in different decades.   
Your paper will be scored on how well it: (a) succinctly summarizes your person’s life and (b) 
identifies the prevailing Zeitgeist and other influences, (c) describes his or her contributions to 
psychology, and (d) traces the historical development and current status of your person’s legacy 
contribution.   
You will need to provide at least 5 references for your paper.  Your sources should include at 
least two books (or book chapters), three journal articles written by your person (or about your 
person or about your person’s legacy contribution), and no more than one trustworthy Internet 
source (NOT wikipedia).  The paper, written in APA style, should be 10-12 typed pages.  Each 
of the parts of your paper should be about the same length.  Factual statements in the paper must 
be properly referenced.  Your paper can earn a maximum of 100 points.  Late papers will be 
docked 10 points per day. A hard copy of your paper, along with the first page of each reference 
you used, is due by 5pm on 12/5. I will be in my office all day to take them.

*Make sure to use the PsychInfo database.  Others are limited in their scope of coverage. 
* Make minimal use of direct quotes on this assignment. Make sure to summarize the abstracts 
that you are reading in your own words-- never copy any phrases or sentences directly or closely 
paraphrase the original authors. Do not quote the titles of the papers you cite in the body of your 
paper. 
*Citations in your paper should be consistent with the APA publication manual. For example: 
 • Smith (1998) found that….. 
 • Smith and his colleagues conducted a number of studies that investigated…. (Smith, 
1998; Smith & Jones, 1999). 
 
*NOTE: You may NOT choose any of the following psychologists/psychiatrists/researchers 
that are historical figures who have been the focus of substantial biographical research:  
Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, Albert Bandura, B.F. Skinner, John B. Watson, Ivan Pavlov, 
Jean Piaget, William James, Erik Erikson, Carl Rogers. 
 
*Supporting References 
A reference section is required for this paper. Additionally, for each citation you make within 
your paper, you must print out the title page from the journal article that you found on PsychInfo

• Concurrent enrollment in QMBE 2786 or prior credit for that course.

Brief Description:  
We meet once a week in KH208 and explore using Excel for statistical analysis. 
While Excel is not generally regarded as software suitable for professional statistical work, it does some things 
very well and has the advantage of being generally available in the business setting. 
We will be interested in three components of the Excel package: chart-making, statistical functions, and the 
built-in data analysis tools, which are basically programmed combinations of the statistical functions. If you 
choose, you can buy a giant manual and become a master of Excel, knowing all its tricks, shortcuts, and arcane 
features -- a temporary  kind of knowledge -- or you can take my approach, which is to know what statistical 
task you wish to accomplish and then click around until you make it happen. Of course, in the process you’ll 
pick up a lot of the tricks. But this is more a course in statistics than one in Excel. Mastering the correct logic is 
the most important thing. 
The Lab Manual: 
Posted for your convenience on Moodle. This is free resource that I created for Excel 2013. I don’t necessarily 
recommend printing, since many of the screen shots will be hard to read in that format. In the Word version 
posted, they can be enlarged. The 2786 lecture text also has Excel instruction. 
 
Grade Components: 
There will be 3 components to your grade: 
  
1. Attendance. You start with 10 attendance points. Each student is allowed 2 unexcused absences. There are 
no excused absences. For each additional absence, you lose one point. The essential component of the course 
is participation, i.e., being there and doing the work. Attendance will be recorded in the following way: Sign 
the roll sheet  passed  around each lab. If your name is on the roll sheet, and I verify your presence, then you 
are there that day. If you come late, you are not there. If you don’t sign the roll sheet, you are not there. It is 
not my responsibility to make sure that you sign. Signing the roll sheet for another student is an honor 
violation.  
2. The Topic Documents. Each week I will post exercises, with instructions, for you to complete in class. You 
will upload a digital copy to Moodle and  print a hard copy for your own reference. This will ensure that you 
know how to print on the test days, and also will help you to check whether you formatted the documents

correctly.  For each document submitted, the grade 0, 1, 2 or 3 will be assigned. To receive a ‘3’, all questions 
must be answered in good faith -- no part of the assignment can be omitted and each part must show evidence 
of a thoughtful response, the formatting of the document must be unchanged and the document must consist 
of the required number of pages. Otherwise, these papers will not be graded in detail. Your percentage of the 
total possible is your topics grade. The topic docs are uploaded only during lab. Do not upload any document 
for a fellow student. This is an honor violation and will result in serious consequences for both students 
involved. If you can demonstrate a valid reason for missing a lab, you can make up the missing work (docs 
only, not a test!) by attending another section. You will work on the missed assignment during that class, not 
before, and will submit only a hard copy of the document.  A maximum of 2 such make-ups is permitted. You 
must obtain permission in advance and the make-up must be completed within 2 weeks. You may not simply 
submit work done by another student. 
 
3. Tests. There will be 2 tests, but no final exam. Each student may elect to take a comprehensive make-up 
test to replace a missed test or a low test score. The make-up will be given on Monday 12/7. I’ll use the 
average of your best 2 of the 3 grades. Students who are happy with their test average don’t have to take the 
make-up. Students wanting to make up a missed topic assignment may do so during the make-up test time. 
 
Attendance and Grading: 
To reiterate, since this is a lab course, attendance is mandatory. Do not take this section of the course if there 
is any reason –- including those that are work-related -- that you can’t arrive punctually for all classes. Your 
numerical grade in the course will be computed as follows: 
Grade =  Attendance Grade  + .30 Topic Docs  Grade + .60 Test Average 
Your letter grade will be assigned as follows: 
100 to 90 = A, 89 to 78 = B, 77 to 64 = C, 63 to 50 = D, 49 to 0 = F 
There is no other curve. There is no final exam.

A few computer tips: 
1. When you download the doc or test files from Moodle, SAVE AS to your I-drive  (Computer). Don’t just open 
the files. You may have to enable editing.  If you then have a problem with your particular computer or 
keyboard, you can simply log off and move to a different computer. 
2. If I send the class as a whole (or individual students) files, these will go the LanSchool folder in the C-drive. 
Save  these to your I-drive. 
 
3. If Word or Excel is not cooperating, a strategy that often works is to save, close the file, and re-open it. 
 
4. Don’t be a fidgety clicker. You may jam up the file. Sometimes just waiting is all that is required. Think 
before you click! 
 
5. In order to produce concise, uniform Word documents -- without blowing the answer boxes up -- the 
following paste options are recommended: 
a) for single lines of formula or numbers: Paste Special/Formatted Text. The default font size is small. 
 
b) for charts (histograms, etc): Paste Special/Chart. 
 
c) for Excel statistical output of more than one line (e.g., an Anova table): Paste Special/Worksheet Object.

SYLLABUS 
 
I. DESCRIPTION 
This course will examine the history of the United States from the year 1877 to the present day. Class 
lectures and discussions will focus on experiencing America from its recovery and reconstruction in the 
wake of the Civil War to its industrial and technological growth at the end of the nineteenth century and its 
emergence as a world power at the turn of the century. The course will survey America’s emergence as an 
imperial power, its role in two World Wars, its address of the worst economic disaster in American and 
world history, and its role as a superpower during the Cold War—both at home and abroad. The course will 
then study the consequences of the end of the Cold War and the United States’ place as the remaining 
superpower in the world.  Finally, the course will scrutinize the political course of the nation as it became 
dominated by the two-party system and the role of race in both the social and political life of America. 
 
II. GOALS - upon completion of this course the student should be able to comprehend and/or identify: 
A. the impact of the end of Reconstruction on the states of the former Confederacy and how it contributed the 
growing racial tensions throughout the whole nation; 
B. the development of African-American culture since Reconstruction and the struggles endured by African-
Americans throughout the nation; 
C. all states of the Union and find them on a map, especially the ones that joined the nation since 1877; 
D. the major personalities and individuals who helped shape the American nation since 1877; 
E. the exponential growth of American industrial capacity in the late nineteenth century and the individuals 
who helped engender this growth; 
F. the political philosophies and struggles that solidified the two-part system in the nation; 
G. the role that immigrants from around the world played in helping to build the American nation and its 
identity;

H. the role the American military and industrial might played in winning two World Wars and the Cold War; 
I. the reasons and issues that led to the involvement and then withdrawal of American military forces in 
Vietnam;  
J. the growth of terrorism in late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, and… 
K. be able to point out the major regions, states, cities, rivers, and other geographic locations on a map 
of the United States. 
 
III. INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS 
A. Lecture – using Power Point Presentations, Maps, and Slideshows 
B. Discussion – a two way dynamic in which students engage the instructor in dialogue 
C. Reading (required texts, instructor's notes and handouts) 
D. Primary Source Exercises 
E. Video Assignments – a series of films dealing with topics in American History will be assigned for 
weekend viewing along with assignments and will be reviewed for extra credit. 
 
IV. REQUIRED TEXT 
A. You will be required to have a textbook that will supplement the notes that you take in class.  In addition, 
you have one outside reading to make as part of U.S. History.

D. PRIMARY SOURCE EXERCISES – throughout the semester, you will have a series of articles from a 
primary source that you will read and upon which you shall analyze in a scholarly submission 
 
V. CLASS EXPECTATIONS AND GUIDELINES 
A. Attendance, Participation, and Conduct 
1. The course will be treated in a professional manner by the instructor, and students are expected to treat 
it in the same manner. 
2. Be present and on time for all classes. Chronic lateness will not be tolerated and will be treated as 
absences. 
3. The roll sheet will be sent around promptly at the beginning of class and/or after the break. 
4. Arriving after roll has been taken constitutes an absence. 
5. Students are allowed three unexcused absences. Every absence after that will result in a 5% penalty 
deducted from the final grade. This is non-negotiable.  
6. An excused absence is one either previously approved by the instructor or one in which a doctor’s note, 
an obituary, military duty, or some other acceptable method of documentation is presented. 
7. Make it count!  Good class discussion is vitally important.  Class participation will constitute a 
significant portion of the final grade. 
8. CLASS NOTES – you are expected to take notes in class from the presented power point slides and the 
instructor’s lecture.  Class notes will not be placed on the internet for you. 
9. Every student in the class will be required to make at least one documented visit to the instructor during 
office hours.  If schedules do not permit, appointments can be made. 
 
B. Cell Phone and Technology Usage 
1. Cell phone usage is expressly prohibited in the class. Cell phones must be silenced upon entering class.  
2. Any type of cell phone utilization may be cause for dismissal from the class and receiving an absence.  
3. Laptops may be used for note-taking only.  Social media is distracting to other students and not a 
professional use of time. 
4. Any exceptions to this regulation must be cleared with the instructor prior to the beginning of class.

C. INSTRUCTOR STUDENT COMMUNICATION 
1. I shall communicate with you through your UNO e-mail account.  All e-mails I send to you will have 
“HISTORY 2105” in the Subject Area. 
2. You shall communicate directly with me through my UNO account. 
3. Under no circumstances will I send class-related e-mails directly through your personal e-mail 
accounts.  Check your UNO accounts regularly (once a day) for important information. 
4. GRADES – Federal Law (FERPA) prohibits the dissemination of grades via e-mail or to third parties 
(i.e., parents or friends).  You have the ability to track your grades partially through Moodle throughout 
the semester.  Please do so in order to avoid last minute “surprises.” 
 
D. Tests 
1. The mid-term and final exams will consist of multiple choice, short essays, and long essays. 
2. MAKE-UP TESTS 
a. No make-up tests will be given, except in the case of excused absence for a documented serious 
reason.  (In other words, do not miss on the day of a test or exam.) 
b. Make-up tests and the make-up final will be administered on Friday, December 11.  They will not 
be available any other day. 
c. Failure to take the make-up exam will result in a zero for that exam. 
3. This is not high school. No extra work will be given to ameliorate a grade.  Do not ask. 
 
E. Primary Source Exercises (PSEs) 
1. In addition to the required readings in the text book and assigned reading, students will read and then 
comment upon articles taken from a primary source examining a particular aspect of the United States 
as it relates to U.S. History. 
2. Students are to write a one to two page paper answering the question put before them according to the 
guidelines of each assignment. 
3. The assignment is to be scholarly in its approach; i.e., using good grammar and style and using your 
own analysis and not someone else’s.  
4. Students are to both form the information they gather on the topic (i.e., put it into a logical course); and 
then transform the information (i.e., develop an opinion and perspective based on the information.) 
5. The assignment opens on Sunday, the week it is due.   
6. Students are to turn in PSEs to turnitin through Moodle no later than Friday of the week at 6 p.m.  
Moodle will close at 6:00 p.m. and very little consideration will be given to pleas to allow assignments 
to be submitted.

VIII. Incomplete Policy – Undergraduate only 
The grade of “I” means incomplete and is given for work of passing quality but which, because of 
circumstances beyond the student's control, is not complete. The issuance of the grade of I is at the discretion 
of the faculty member teaching the course. For all graduate and undergraduate students, a grade of I becomes 
a grade of F if it is not converted before the deadline for adding courses for credit (as printed in the Important 
Dates Calendar) of the next regular semester including summer semester. 
 
IX. Repeat Policy 
When a student is permitted to repeat a course for credit, the last grade earned shall be the one which 
determines course acceptability for degree credit. A student who has earned a C or better in a course may not 
repeat that course unless, (1) the catalog description indicates that the course may be repeated for credit, or (2) 
the student's Dean gives prior approval for documented extenuating circumstances.

Special Topics in History:   
Visual Representations of Austrian and European History during the Reign of 
Emperor Franz Joseph I, 1848 – 1916  
 
Course Description 
Franz Joseph I was born in 1830 and became Emperor of Austria in 1848 went on to reign for over half a 
century from 1848 to 1916. Like no other Habsburg ruler he epitomized the Austrian Empire and its 
dynastic power. Over the period of his long reign, Emperor Franz Joseph became the most prominent 
symbol of the unity and supranational-identity of the Austrian monarchy in an age of national conflicts 
and political paralysis. 
In his capacity of symbolizing the empire, Franz Joseph was honored in numerous public celebrations 
such as the ones which took place in 1898 and 1908 (50th and 60th anniversary of the Emperor’s 
accession), and he was immortalized in an extensive series of visual and written documents.  
This course will concentrate on visual sources and media representations of the imperial cult of the 
Emperor and the state he symbolized. Students will get familiar with Austro-Hungarian self-perception 
and with foreign perceptions of the Austrian Empire and with milestones of History and Visual 
Representations of Leadership in 19th century Europe. 
The course is directed at students interested in Visual  History and Public History. We will read basic 
works by scholars who study visual resources and work closely with digital visual documents from the 
collections of the Austrian National Library and digital historical collections available online.

Students will get an Introduction into the Visual History of Europe in the 19th Century, get familiar with 
basic methodologies and theories of visual resources and learn how to “read” and interpret images and 
how images create imagineries of the past.

Course Description: 
This course will provide students with a general understanding of the law and the legal 
process as they relate to the management of hospitality enterprises.  
Faculty Background:                                                                        
 
I have been a member of the HRT faculty for twenty eight years, prior 
to that I was an executive in the hospitality industry 
at the General Management level. During the past twenty plus years I have provided 
litigation support for numerous attorneys regarding HRT legal issues. The HRT 
web site contains a brief bio about my background. 
Student Learning Objectives:  
1. Development of law related to HRT: 2.The hotel/guest relationship: 3.Legal rights and 
responsibilities of hotels, restaurants, guests and the public; 4. Contracts; 
5. Food and beverage service responsibilities; and 6. Other relevant legal topics.

Attendance: Attendance is required and will be a factor in 
computing your final grade, students who are late to class will 
be marked absent. Five points (approximately 1% of the total 
possible score) will be deducted from your total score for each 
absence. Each student will be allowed TWO (2) excused 
absences.

addition, please have all electronic devices turned off and not 
placed on your desk. If you need to use an electronic device 
because of a disability, please provide the instructor with the

Assessment & Grading: (NO MAKE UP QUIZZES or EXAMS 
will be ADMINISTERED) 
Be sure to pay close attention to DATES and TIMES. 
 Quizzes (To be taken in MOODLE): 
There is  QUIZ for each CHAPTER ( 1 thru 16 ), each quiz will have 20 questions 
and must be completed in 15 minutes, except CHAPTER 7 which has 16 questions 
and must be completed in 12 minutes ( 45 seconds or ¾ of a minute is allowed for 
each question ). The total possible score for quizzes is 316 points (each question is 
worth ONE point toward your total score). 
 Quizzes for each chapter will be posted as noted within this syllabus.  The questions 
may be true/false or multiple choice, etc.   
Quizzes are due on the date and times noted.  There are no opportunities for make-ups. 
 
 Online Course Statement: 
 
HRT 3016 will use online resources for taking quizzes. By registering for this class, 
students have agreed to the basic premise of having reliable computer and internet 
capability. Students are REQUIRED to activate their UNO email account and have 
Moodle access.  The professor will only send information via UNO email and UNO 
Moodle.  Students understand that all quizzes will be conducted via Moodle.  If you have 
any trouble setting up/accessing your account, please call (504)280-HELP. 
 
 To ensure academic integrity, all students enrolled in distance learning courses at the University 
of New Orleans may be required to participate in additional student identification procedures. At 
the discretion of the faculty member teaching the course, these measures may include on-campus 
proctored examinations, off-site or online proctored examinations, or other reasonable measures 
to ensure student identity. Authentication measures for this course are identified below and any

The University of New Orleans partners with Proctor U, a live, online proctoring service that 
allows students to complete exams from any location using a computer, webcam, and reliable

Examinations (TO BE TAKEN IN CLASS at the time scheduled herein): 
 
There will be two examinations, a mid semester exam and a final exam. The dates, times 
and time allowed for each are posted within this syllabus.  No exam or quiz will be dropped 
for the purpose of calculating the final grade.  All examinations and quizzes will include all 
TEXT and LECTURE materials as noted in this syllabus and including GUEST SPEAKER 
PRESENTATIONS.  There are no opportunities for make-up examinations. 
 
The mid semester exam will contain 80 questions (80 points). You will have ONE 
HOUR to complete this examination. 
 
The final examination will contain 160 questions (160 points). You will have TWO 
HOURS to complete this examination. 
 
DATES, DAYS, TIME, and DURATION are noted in this syllabus. 
 
THERE ARE A TOTAL OF 556 POSSIBLE POINTS FOR THE COURSE, 316 for 
all quizzes, 80 for the mid semester and 160 for the final. 
 
 
Students suspected of cheating or collaborating with anyone on any examination or quiz 
will receive an F and be dismissed from the course.   
 
 
*Take the quizzes using Firefox as your browser, and you should not encounter any 
problems.  All computers on campus have Firefox installed.   
 
*Not completing a quiz because you are experiencing computer difficulties is not 
acceptable.  You will receive a 0 if you do not complete the quiz, or you will receive 
credit for the questions that you attempted.  No make ups will be given!  
 
Do not take the quiz from your cell phone, IPAD, or other 
device that may cause you to experience difficulties while 
taking the exam.   
 
 
 
 
Quiz Directions: 
 
Each quiz will be administered through Moodle. The following are directions for taking 
your quizzes.   
 
  
1) The quizzes will take place in Moodle. Each will be available to the students on 
the specified day, date, time and for the duration specified in this syllabus. The 
questions may be multiple choice or true or false.     
 
2) Each quiz is timed, a time elapsed clock will be displayed at the top of the 
screen.  Please monitor your testing time.  Please keep in mind that I have 
access to your testing beginning and completion time.  If you exceed 
the allotted time limit your response will  
automatically be deleted and you will receive a 
ZERO for the entire quiz!!!! 
 
3) Each quiz must be completed at the time of log in. The quiz cannot be resumed 
later. 
 
4) One question will appear on a page at a time.  You must click on each question 
until you reach the end of the quiz.  You can save the question and continue 
without submitting to the next question which is highly recommended.  You can 
review your answers before submitting your quiz as long as the time limit is not 
reached. 
 
5) At the completion of the final question, click the submit button at the bottom of 
the screen. This will submit your examination for grading. 
 
6) Moodle does not allow you to open other computer programs or click out of the 
quiz.  Close all other computer programs (except Moodle) while taking your quiz. 
If not, you may be locked out of the exam and receive a 0. 
 
 
7) You are expected to complete the quizzes individually. Any collaboration 
constitutes academic dishonesty; you will receive an "F" and will be dismissed 
from the course. 
 
8) You must complete the exam by the time deadline.  If you go over the allotted

 Statement of Accommodations for Students with Disabilities:  
The Office of Disability Services (ODS), in conjunction with the Office of Academic 
Affair’s campus-wide administrative policy regarding the accommodations of students 
 with disabilities, has two primary objectives: 1) to ensure compliance with Section 504 
of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in regard 
to equal access for qualified students to academic programs; and 2) to uphold the 
academic integrity of UNO.  When these two objectives are met, those students who 
qualify for services based on clear, comprehensive, and relevant documentation will 
receive those services or academic modifications for which they are legally entitled. 
 
ODS is considered the University’s designated office for determining eligibility for 
services, reviewing and maintaining documentation, and recommending appropriate 
accommodations.  Students, however, do not have to register with ODS in order to 
advocate for disability-related accommodations.  For those instructors who have students 
with disabilities who choose not to register for services with ODS, and who request 
academic accommodations, ODS is available as a resource to verify eligibility and 
recommend appropriate accommodations. 
Part of this policy regulates the accommodative testing services.  These accommodations 
are made available in the ODS Accommodative Testing and Adaptive Technology Center 
(ATATC), located in the Library Room 120.  For more information contact Amy King,

Sexual Harassment Policy: 
 
Purpose:  To reaffirm the University’s policy against sexual harassment in any and all 
areas of the University environment.  Harassment on the basis of sex is a violation of 
Section 703 of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Additionally, sexual harassment 
subverts the mission of the University.  It is necessary, therefore, to prohibit such 
behavior to protect both the individuals involved and the University.  
General Policy:  Sexual harassment is unacceptable behavior and will not be tolerated.  
Sexual harassment is a violation of state and federal law.  Sexual harassment has a 
negative impact on the functioning of the University.  Consequently, all member of the 
University community must be sensitive to the possibility of sexual harassment whether 
intended or inadvertent.  Individuals must recognize this potential and act to prevent it.  
When sexual harassment has occurred, the University shall take effective and expeditious 
action. 
Individuals in supervisory positions must be aware of their role as agents of the 
University and shall make every effort to censure such behavior when it occurs.  Any 
member of the University community who is informed of a possible incident of sexual 
harassment shall make the informer aware of the existence of the University’s policy and 
procedures. 
 
 
 
All members of the University community must learn to recognize sexual harassment 
when it occurs and should be aware of the policy and procedures which govern the 
handling of allegations of sexual harassment fairly and expeditiously.  Since those who 
may be subjected to sexual harassment may experience disruption in their work or 
academic environment and may fear retaliation and public notoriety, investigative 
procedures must protect their privacy as much as possible.

Academic Integrity is fundamental to the process of learning and evaluating academic 
performance. Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated.  Academic dishonesty includes,

Coverage:  This course will focus on the theory of probability and will include 
the following topics: 
I. Basic properties of probability theory: chapter 1 
II. Distribution and expectation: chapter 2 
III. Univariate distributions: chapter 3 
IV. Joint distributions: chapter 4 
V. Functions of random variables: chapter 5 
VI. Sampling distributions: chapter 6 
 
Some further sections may also be added to this list. 
 
Course prerequisites: Math 2115/2134.  
Grading:  There will be homework, two midterm exams and a final exam. See 
the Tentative Schedule below for exam dates. The homework carries a total of 
20% of the final grade, each midterm exam carries 20%, and the final exam 
carries 40%. The overall grading scale is 
 
A: 85+;   B: 75-84;   C: 65-74;   D: 55-64;   F: < 55. 
 
Note:  In general, no make-up exams will be given. The final exam is cumulative.  
  
Student learning outcomes: By the end of the semester, you should be able 
to understand the basic theory of probability, to learn various distributions, law 
of large numbers, moment generating functions, etc.  
 
More information and expectation: The course will be taught by classroom 
lectures, the traditional way. Homework will be assigned for each chapter and 
will be collected and graded. You are expected to arrive on time, remain in full 
class session, and participate in class discussions. You are also expected to turn 
in all assignments on time; penalties will be given for late assignments. All cell 
phones must be turned off before coming to class.  
 
Computer labs: Statistical package SAS is available in rooms 105, 107, 110, 
200, and 320 of the math building. Room 317 is open 24/7, and the other labs 
are 8:30am –4:30 pm.

Withdrawal Policy – Undergraduate only 
Students are responsible for initiating action to resign from the University (withdraw from all courses) or from a course on or before 
dates indicated in the current Important dates calendar. Students who fail to resign by the published final date for such action will be 
retained on the class rolls even though they may be absent for the remainder of the semester and be graded as if they were in

Incomplete Policy – Undergraduate only 
The grade of I means incomplete and is given for work of passing quality but which, because of circumstances beyond the student's 
control, is not complete. The issuance of the grade of I is at the discretion of the faculty member teaching the course. For all graduate 
and undergraduate students, a grade of I becomes a grade of F if it is not converted before the deadline for adding courses for credit 
(as printed in the Important Dates Calendar) of the next regular semester including summer semester. 
Repeat Policy 
When a student is permitted to repeat a course for credit, the last grade earned shall be the one which determines course acceptability 
for degree credit. A student who has earned a C or better in a course may not repeat that course unless, (1) the catalog description 
indicates that the course may be repeated for credit, or (2) the student's Dean gives prior approval for documented extenuating 
circumstances.

MATH 6311

Representatives from Broward County Government and the U.S. Geological Survey provided a multidisciplinary audience with four challenge questions. Following a Sea Level Rise Expedition on October 26, 2015, natural and social scientists and managers from the local area participated in the scenario-based workshop at the Broward County Governmental Center.  Attendees tackled issues related to the recurring flooding caused by sea level rise and issues surrounding a scenario that included an increasing frequency of severe storms associated with climate change. Challenge questions helped the researchers to discuss natural and nature-based approaches capable of improving the quality and resilience of economic, ecologic, and social systems
