“Casey Saw It Through”: Guy “Machine Gun” Molony and the Creation of a Rugged Individual
Abstract
This thesis explores the influence of masculinity in twentieth century American foreign policy through examining the career of Guy “Machine Gun” Molony. Molony was an Irish American mercenary from New Orleans, whose career saw the transformation of Honduras from a banana republic to a recipient of dollar diplomacy. Unlike the majority of mercenaries who did not use their experience to build successful careers, Molony made a name for himself in American newspapers, becoming respected and even feared by policemen and politicians. His life tells a fascinating tale of the individual male in American foreign policy, where rebellious youth used war and instability to create heroic images of themselves. This thesis argues that the U.S. State Department borrowed from the independent mercenary model, building on a foundation laid out by men like Molony to implement dollar diplomacy. Guy Molony’s career is a telling example of how perceived ideas of manhood carried imperial intentions during the era of manifest destiny and the Monroe Doctrine. Although scholars tend to focus on Western expansion when examining the ideology of manifest destiny, this thesis explores how mercenaries like Guy Molony, followed by the U.S. State Department, continued to look southward to Central America as a means for American expansion
The 30th Anniversary Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival: An Internship Academic Report
This report presents a reflection and analysis of my internship with the Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival, where I completed 480 hours of work in pursuit of the M.A. in Arts Administration. I worked primarily with Tracy Ferrington Cunningham, Director of Communications & Special Events, in preparing and organizing the 2016 Festival, which represented the organization’s 30th anniversary. In this report, I will deliver an organizational overview of the Festival, describe my internship duties and responsibilities, analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the organization, and provide best practices and recommendations in festival management
Statewide Survey of Louisiana Likely Voters on David Duke
Our goal was learn about the public’s perception of David Duke-R since he recently announced his candidacy for the open US Senate seat in Louisiana. The poll gauged Duke’s favorability ratings among likely Louisiana voters. We then asked respondents whether they would vote for him in the primary. We also asked Louisiana voters if they would support him if he faced a Democrat in the runoff. Finally, the survey asked respondents whether they approve or disapprove of Governor John Bel Edwards’ job performance. Demographic variables include race, gender, age, and education. Respondents were also asked to self-report their party identification
Engineering Nanoarchitectures from Nanosheets, Nanoscrolls, and Nanoparticles
The ability to encapsulate/insert different kinds of nanoparticles (NPs) in scrolled nanosheets (NSs) may lead to the formation of new nanocomposite materials that yield novel properties. These nanostructures resemble “peapods” that consist of NPs chains (“peas”) located in a hollow space of desired nanoscrolls (“pods”). Depending on different combinations of “peas” and “pods” diverse families of nanopeapods (NPPs) can be synthesized which may exhibit interesting properties not accessible from the individual components. Though there exist various synthetic methods for the formation of NPPs, more development in terms of simplicity, flexibility, and productivity of synthetic approaches are needed so that different classes of NPPs with unique combinations/characteristics of “peas” and “pods” can be synthesized.
A simple solvothermal synthesis method for the encapsulation of spherical Fe3O4 NPs by the capture of preformed NPs in scrolled hexaniobate has previously been developed in our group. In the first part of this research, efforts were made to extend the “pod” materials to other inorganic NScs. Vanadate nanoscrolls (NScs) could rapidly (2h) be produced using a simple solvothermal treatment in the presence of V2O5 as vanadium source, and either dodecylamine (DDA) or octadecylamine (ODA) as the structure-directing agent. The synthesis parameters were successfully adjusted to obtain high yields vanadate NScs (~ 20 g of NScs per synthesis) with different average lengths as 383 nm, 816 nm to 3.3 µm. The effects of reaction time on the formation of NScs were also investigated.
Further efforts focused on the development of methods for making vanadate NPPs. Here, two novel approaches for the formation of these NPPs have been successfully developed. In the first, solvothermal methods utilizing preformed Ag NPs and vanadate NSs lead to the formation of Ag@vanadate NPPs where NPs could be encapsulated during the scrolling of NSs. High NP loadings were acquired with this approach. In the second method, an insertion strategy was developed where Ag NPs were drawn into the lumen of preformed vanadate NScs upon controlled solvent evaporation. This method was also quite effective, though much lower loadings of NPs were achieved with larger average NP-NP distances. Also noteworthy in the study of vanadate NScs and NPPs is the observation of an uncommon asymmetric scrolling behavior; this was realized for both vanadate NScs and solvothermally synthesized Ag@vanadate NPPs.
Novel solvothermal approaches for the effective construction of organic-MoOx hybrid structures and MoOx nanosheets (NSs) have also been developed. These NSs can be controlled so as to exist in different oxidation states as well as in different crystal structures. Layer spacing as a function of organic molecule lengths could also be controlled by changing the type of surfactants located between the NSs. Individual NSs or a few layers of stacked NSs, up to four micrometers in lateral size were successfully prepared upon sonication. The effect of time, temperature, as well as the type of structure-directing agents on the formation and crystal structure of MoOx intercalated compound/NSs were also explored.
Lastly, a modified solvothermal method previously used for the encapsulation of spherical Fe3O4 NPs inside hexaniobate NScs was applied for the construction of cubic-CeO2 NPPs. High yield encapsulations of preformed cubic ~5 nm ceria NPs within the lumen of hexaniobate NScs were readily accomplished. Size selective encapsulation and the formation mechanism of cubic-CeO2 NPPs were also studied. Pre-organization and attachment of ceria NPs to the surface/edges of hexaniobate crystals prior to the scrolling process were observed, which is in a good agreement with our previous studies on the formation mechanism of NPPs. Partially filled CeO2@hexaniobate NPPs were further used in the in-situ growth of gold NPs within the empty/hollow space of hexaniobate NScs. This led to the formation of high-quality Au-CeO2@hexaniobate NPPs. We believe that smart combinations of the methods for the formation of NPPs, encapsulation, in-situ growth and insertion, will allow one to acquire other classes of nanocomposite materials composed of different types, shapes, and arrangements of NPs in the hollow spaces of distinct NTs/NScs

Measuring Access to Employment to Guide and Evaluate Public Transit Service Planning in New Orleans
New software and technology is making it easier than ever before for public transportation planners to evaluate how quickly residents can reach jobs and other destinations. Because in the past it was difficult to measure access to opportunities, these concepts remained primarily in the theoretical and academic realms of research. This thesis reviews methods that could be used to evaluate routine bus service improvements and performs a comparative analysis of different methods in the context of New Orleans. There are many different variables in how the analysis could be performed, but this thesis focuses on the role that time of day plays in analyzing service changes. The results show that accessibility can be a very useful metric to evaluate the effectiveness of transit service changes. It goes on to explore techniques that could assist transit planners and schedulers to identify service gaps and prioritize service changes
Jill Jackson: Pioneering in the Press Box
Jill Jackson was one of the first female sports journalists and a pioneer voice for women in athletics. Although heretofore overlooked in the history of American sports journalism, the story of her career is an addition not only to the historiography of female sports journalists but also to the broader study of women in the mid-twentieth century. Jackson was admired, a hard worker, from a prominent New Orleans family, and well educated, yet she still was treated unequally in her primary workspace—the press box. Jackson left well-documented story to the Nadine Vorhoff Library and Special Collections at Newcomb College Institute in New Orleans. The collection, comprised of scrapbooks, photographs, letters, and newspaper articles, reveal the struggles and rewards of her impressive career
Effects of Negative Online Word-of-Mouth on Consumer Evaluations of an Underdog Brand
Research on underdogs has suggested that consumers feel sympathy for and a desire to support the underdog. However, it is unclear how their evaluations of the underdog will change if they receive negative information about it. The current research aims to explore the role of negative word-of-mouth of the underdog, compared to the top dog, in consumers’ brand attitude, brand value, and purchase intention. Specifically, drawing on two streams of research, two competing hypotheses are proposed and tested. An experiment was conducted with online consumer panel members. Consistent with confirmation bias and familiarity principle, the results supported a hypothesis that an underdog brand suffers more than a top dog brand from negative online word-of-mouth. Theoretical and practical implications of these findings along with future research directions are discussed
