    Predicting User Choices in Interactive Narratives using Indexter\u27s Pairwise Event Salience Hypothesis

    Indexter is a plan-based model of narrative that incorporates cognitive scientific theories about the salience—or prominence in memory—of narrative events. A pair of Indexter events can share up to five indices with one another: protagonist, time, space, causality, and intentionality. The pairwise event salience hypothesis states that when a past event shares one or more of these indices with the most recently narrated event, that past event is more salient, or easier to recall, than an event which shares none of them. In this study we demonstrate that we can predict user choices based on the salience of past events. Specifically, we investigate the hypothesis that when users are given a choice between two events in an interactive narrative, they are more likely to choose the one which makes the previous events in the story more salient according to this theory

    In 1917, Henry Billiot sued the Terrebonne Parish School Board because his children, who identified as Houma Indian, were denied access to a local white school. The resulting case, Henry Billiot v. Terrebonne Parish School Board, shaped the way in which the community of Terrebonne Parish categorized the race of not only the Billiot family but also the Houma tribe over the course of fifty years. Through the use of Jim Crow legislation, the white community legally refused to consider the Houma tribe as American Indian, and instead chose the derogatory term Sabine as the racial classification of this indigenous group, which detrimentally impacted the United Houma Nation’s fight for federal recognition as an American Indian tribe

    The Art of Discord: Organization and Planning Among Internet Trolls

    Within recent years, there has been a significant increase in popular commentary on internet trolls and what they mean for online interactions. Significant attention is often paid to framing trolls as individual, pathological, and atypical. While there is much one-sided dialogue occurring in the media, however, the literature on internet trolling remains scarce. This exploratory study contributes to the developing literature by addressing internet trolls directly. Drawing on interviews with a self-identified troll and content analysis, this thesis aims to understand how trolls operate, interact, and make meaning while highlighting the role of identity and emotions. This study finds that internet trolls are highly organized and social, in direct contradiction to the prevailing media narrative

    Protecting the Future by Preserving the Past: A Report to the St. John the Baptist Parish Historic Preservation Study Committee

    St. John the Baptist Parish is home to a considerable amount of historic landmarks and neighborhoods. Presently, sixteen properties throughout St. John and the national historic district of Garyville are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Although prestigious, this mostly honorary recognition provides limited legal protections for their preservation (Miller, 2008). As a result, St. John the Baptist Parish has lost a significant amount of historic property. A program to protect the parish’s significant historic and cultural landmarks can help preserve and revitalize areas of established historic value and capitalize on existing parish assets. In fall 2016, the St. John the Baptist Parish Planning and Zoning Department invited the UNO-PLUS Masters of Urban and Regional Planning Practicum team to work with a council-appointed study committee of stakeholders to develop a historic preservation and revitalization strategy. As part of the development of this strategy, St. John the Baptist Parish is working to become a Certified Local Government (CLG) to pursue their historic preservation agenda and to access funding for revitalization projects in the parish. This report provides the study committee with the team’s findings and recommendations for the historic preservation strategy which includes a structure survey of the four proposed historic districts, a review of the draft ordinance, an overview of historic preservation resources, and community outreach materials

    Distributed Emitter Detector Design under Imperfect Communication Channel

    We consider the distributed detection of an emitter using multiple sensors deployed at deterministic locations. The signal from the emitter follows a signal attenuation model dependent on the distance between the sensor and the emitter. The sensors transmit their decisions to the fusion center through a parallel access Binary Symmetric Channel (BSC) with a cross-over probability. We seek to optimize the detection performance under a prescribed false alarm at the sensor level and at the system level. We consider the triangular topology structure and using the least favorable emitter range study the impact of the BSC on the system level detection fusion rules. The MAJORITY fusion rule is found to be optimal under certain conditions

    Underwater Acoustic Signal Analysis Toolkit

    This project started early in the summer of 2016 when it became evident there was a need for an effective and efficient signal analysis toolkit for the Littoral Acoustic Demonstration Center Gulf Ecological Monitoring and Modeling (LADC-GEMM) Research Consortium. LADC-GEMM collected underwater acoustic data in the northern Gulf of Mexico during the summer of 2015 using Environmental Acoustic Recording Systems (EARS) buoys. Much of the visualization of data was handled through short scripts and executed through terminal commands, each time requiring the data to be loaded into memory and parameters to be fed through arguments. The vision was to develop a graphical user interface (GUI) that would increase the productivity of manual signal analysis. It has been expanded to make several calculations autonomously for cataloging and meta data storage of whale clicks. Over the last year and a half, a working prototype has been developed with MathWorks matrix laboratory (MATLAB), an integrated development environment (IDE). The prototype is now very modular and can accept new tools relatively quickly when development is completed. The program has been named Banshee, as the mythical creatures are known to “wail”. This paper outlines the functionality of the GUI, explains the benefits of frequency analysis, the physical models that facilitate these analytics, and the mathematics performed to achieve these models

    Charismatic Leadership Perceptions from K-12 Administrators: Phenomena of Follower and Leader Interdependency

    A greater understanding of the nature of leadership can be gained by empirical analyses, such as this quantitative study, addressing the influence executive administrators have on their message recipients, their followers. This study sampled 64 non-teaching K-12 school, district, and state administrators and measured their perceptions of their immediate supervisors’ leadership behaviors by completing the ©Conger-Kanungo Charismatic Leadership Scale (Conger, Kanungo, Menon, & Mathur, 1997) and the ©Perceived Leadership Behavior Measures Inventory (Conger, Kanungo, & Menon, 2000). Analyses of variables measuring perceived leadership behaviors and those effects on the attitudes and perceptions of their followers may contribute to a better understanding of the phenomena of non-teaching administrator follower and leader interdependency in K-12 organizations. Leaders can develop more refined leadership skill characteristics that might enhance ones’ abilities in communicating exemplary characteristics and charismatic behaviors. In turn, these refined abilities can contribute to an organization’s effectiveness by lowering leader and teacher attrition, promoting team building and bonding, and contribute to K-12 administrative leadership development program effectiveness. A General Linear Model with multivariate tests analyses were used to examine correlations between the charismatic leadership behavioral components and the followers’ perceptions of their own motivation, trust, and satisfaction.
