A Dual-Role Analysis of Game Form Misconception and Cognitive Bias in Financial and Economic Decision Making
The endowment and the framing effect are widely examined cognitive biases. The experimental economics literature, using choice data gathered through an elicitation device, commonly finds evidence of these biases. Recent work by Cason & Plott (2014) shows that the interpretation of choice data as consistent with biases related non-standard preference theory could also be consistent with confusion or misconception of the game type used to elucidate preferences. I use the Cason and Plott card auction framework to analyze offers of buyers and sellers in an experimental setting with subjects from the University of New Orleans simulating 97 sellers and 90 buyers. The two games have symmetric payoffs in order to examine cognitive biases given subjects’ misconception of the game form. Subjects of both games display misconception of game form that explains both endowment and framing effects by rational confused choice; however, buyers display a much greater dispersion of offers than sellers. I estimate card implied valuation of sellers and buyers given game form misconception and find no statistical endowment effect, but I do find valuation is more uncertain in the buyer’s game. The theory of Rational Inattention predicts this lack of offer symmetry is due to the additional cognitive steps necessary in calculating buyer offers

2017 Statewide Survey on NFL Player National Anthem Protests
An automated IVR survey of 525 randomly selected Louisiana registered voters was conducted Tuesday September 26, 2017 on the subject of the National Football League’s players who protest the national anthem. The survey was conducted by University of New Orleans political science doctoral candidate Tony Licciardi who is a research assistant at UNO’s Survey Research Center under Dr. Edward Chervenak. Licciardi also teaches state and local government at UNO. The sample of 525 respondents yields a margin of error of 4.28% with 95% confidence

The Survey Research Center conducted an interactive voice response telephone survey, also known as a “robo-poll,” of 919 respondents on Feb. 7. According to the survey, Governor John Bel Edwards enjoys an approval rating of 49 percent. Nonproliferation Regime Compliance: Prediction and Measure Using UNSCR 1540
This dissertation investigates factors that predict compliance with international regimes, specifically the Non-Proliferation Regime. Generally accepted in international relations literature, is Krasner’s (1983) definition that regimes are “sets of implicit or explicit principles, norms, rules, and decision-making procedures around which actor expectations converge in a given [issue] area of international relations.” Using institutionalization as a framework, I hypothesize that compliance is a function of the respect for which a nation has for the rule of law. I investigate the NP regime through the lens of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1540, a mandate for member nations to enact domestic legislation criminalizing the proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction. Using NP regime compliance and implementation of UNSCR 1540’s mandates as dependent variables, I test the hypotheses with the following independent variables: rule of law, political competition, and regional compliance. I also present qualitative case studies on Argentina, South Africa, and Malaysia. The quantitative results of these analyses indicated a strong relationship between rule of law and regional compliance and a nation’s compliance with the overall NP regime and implementation of UNSCR 1540. These results indicate a nation will institutionalize the NP norms, and comply with the specifics of implementation. The results of in-depth analysis of Argentina, South Africa, and Malaysia showed that predicting an individual nation’s compliance is more complex than descriptions of government capacity or geography. Argentina and South Africa, expected by the hypotheses to exhibit low to medium compliance and implementation, scored high and well above their region for both measures. Malaysia, expected to score high in compliance, scored low. Findings thus reveal that rule of law is probably less influential on individual cases and regional compliance and cooperation better predictors of a nation’s compliance with a security regime
The Relationships Between Research Training Environment, Researcher Identity Formation Process, and Research Activity Among Counseling Doctoral Students
Current literature claims that the graduate students’ personal aspects not only influence research training outcomes, but they also serve as a mediator between students’ research activity and research training environment. In previous studies, key predictors of scholarly/research productivity among counseling graduate students have been investigated (Brown, Lent, Ryan, & McPartland, 1996; Kahn, 2001; Kahn & Scott, 1997). However, only 17% of the variance in three factors—research self-efficacy, research interests, and number of years in a program—predicted student research activities directly and research training environment indirectly. Bandura’s social cognitive theory was utilized as the conceptual framework for the study. Data was collected through SurveyMonkey™, an online source that surveyed 292 counseling doctoral students currently enrolled in 90 counseling doctoral programs across the United States. The findings from a factor analysis conducted in the present study indicated, the RIFPQ-R developed by the researcher was a reliable and valid instrument. Additionally, the findings showed that counseling doctoral students’ researcher identity correlated significantly with students’ research activity and research training environment; however, the correlations were weak. Finally, using two multiple regression analyses, students’ research experiences before admission to program, number of credit hours completed in qualitative and quantitative research, number of years enrolled in their program, and weekly hours spent doing research predicted a small portion of variance in students’ reported researcher identity and research activity
Development of Luminescent Quantum Dot-Enabled Nano- and Microplatforms for Multiplex Detection of Biomarkers
Luminescent semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are extensively researched for use in biological applications. They have unique optical and physical properties that make them excellent candidates to replace conventional organic dyes for cellular labeling, multiplexing, nucleic acid detection, and as generalized probes. The primary focus of this dissertation was to utilize quantum dots for improvement in immunoassays. Specifically, atherosclerosis biomarkers were detected simultaneously in an effort to demonstrate advances in early detection diagnostics.
Quantum dot-antibody bioconjugates were prepared by encapsulation into mesoporous silica and functionalized with thiol and amine groups to enable bioconjugation. Functionalization of the mesoporous silica quantum dot composites facilitated biocompatibility for use with biological buffers in immunoassays. These bioconjugates were used in a sandwich immunoassay to detect atherosclerosis biomarkers IL-15 and MCP-1. Sandwich assays employ capture antibodies immobilized onto a well plate to bind as much of the antigen as possible. The capture antibodies increased binding by at least 4 times the amount of antigen bound to the surface of a direct detection assay. The sandwich immunoassay was able to detect 1 pg/mL of IL-15 and 50 pg/mL of MCP-1 biomarkers.
Human serum albumin nanoparticles (HSAPs) were synthesized via a desolvation and crosslinking method. Human serum albumin is a versatile protein being used in a variety of applications. Quantum dots were loaded into HSAPs as potential detection probes for immunoassays. Efficient loading was not achieved, and the assay was unable to improve current detection limits.
Controlled release studies were explored using HSAPs loaded with superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles and a fluorescent drug analog. Exposure to a magnetic field resulted in degradation of the HSAPs. The fluorophore was released and measured to examine how cancer drugs might be controlled through a magnetic field. Gold nanorods and an anticancer drug, Sorafenib, were also encapsulated into HSAPs for treatment of renal cell carcinoma in vivo. Laser irradiation treatment combined with Sorafenib resulted in 100% tumor necrosis and total elimination of any viable tumor present.
