    Line Start Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor for Multi Speed Application

    This thesis aims to design and develop LSPM motors capable of operating in two distant synchronous speeds with good starting torque and steady state characteristics for variety of industrial applications, in particular offshore and maritime applications. The proposed designs are based on variable pole numbers for the stator and the rotor. The stator winding consist of two independent windings with different pole numbers to switch the winding and change the operating pole count for low and high speed applications. For the motor to operate in these two distinct operating speeds, the rotor must be capable of creating two different magnetic polarities (pole numbers) to adapt itself to the stator operating pole number. For this purpose, two different schemes for the rotor structure are proposed. In scheme I two-speed operation is realized by the combination of electromagnetic torque and reluctance torque which enables the motor to operate as a synchronous PM motor at high speed and synchronous reluctance motor at low speed. In scheme II, rotor with dual PM polarity is proposed which enables the motor to operate as a PM motor at both low and high speed regions

    A Qualitative Study to Explore Clinical Supervisors\u27 Perceptions of How Personal Recovery Influences Their Supervision

    Substance abuse counseling has many counselors and supervisors who are in recovery from a personal history of substance abuse. Approximately 37% of supervisors in the substance abuse field reported being in personal recovery (Eby, Burke, & Birkelbach, 2009). Little is known about how a clinical supervisor’s personal recovery influences his or her clinical supervision. The purpose of this phenomenological research study was to investigate the perceived lived experiences of clinical supervisors’ in recovery during the clinical supervision of substance abuse counselors working towards a license or credential in Louisiana. A qualitative phenomenological methodology, Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was used to analyze data from six clinical supervisors in recovery using semi-structured interviews. Themes emerged from the data, which resulted in 13 categories: 1) functions of supervision; 2) factors influencing the supervision relationship; 3) insight into addiction; 4) factors pertaining to self-disclosure; 5) managing dual relationships; 6) recovery isn’t enough; 7) relapse potential and management; 8) stigma of addiction; 9) structure of supervision; 10) countertransference; 11) feelings about self-disclosure; 12) importance of self-care; and 13) supervisors need supervision and consultation The categories provide increased understanding and insight into how recovery influences and were used in supervision by supervisors in recovery. Implications for supervisors in recovery, supervisees of supervisors in recovery, and clinical supervisor educators are also addressed

    The University of New Orleans Survey Research Center (SRC) conducted a telephone poll of 602 likely voters in New Orleans. Telephone numbers were randomly selected from a sample frame of likely voters. A likely voter is defined as an individual who has voted at least three times in the last five statewide elections. Interviews were conducted November 1-8, 2017. The combined landline and cell phone sample matches the gender, age, race, and council district parameters from the voter file obtained from the Louisiana Secretary of State. The margin of error is +/- 4.0 percent at a 95% level of confidence

    The following Creative Nonfiction Thesis delves into the suppressed past of a girl who experienced brief episodes of adolescent epilepsy. She was diagnosed with Rolandic seizures when she was eight years old and eventually “grew out” of them when she hit puberty. Since that time, the author had not spoken of these events with her family. The topic of her epilepsy remained, somewhat, the elephant in the room until the epilepsy discontinued. She interviewed her mother and her sister to see the perspectives of those people who were closest to her throughout this era. Through these interviews, the author learns of what her family truly experienced and their opinions of these events. These events largely affected the past and future relationship between her mother, her sister, and the relationship the author has with herself

    Design, Manufacture, and Structural Dynamic Analysis of a Biomimetic Insect-Sized Wing for Micro Air Vehicles

    The exceptional flying characteristics of airborne insects motivates the design of biomimetic wing structures that can exhibit a similar structural dynamic behavior. For this purpose, this investigation describes a method for both manufacturing a biomimetic insect-sized wing using the photolithography technique and analyzing its structural dynamic response. The geometry of a crane fly forewing (family Tipulidae) is acquired using a micro-computed tomography scanner. A computer-aided design model is generated from the measurements of the reconstructed scanned model of the insect wing to design the photomasks of the membrane and the venation network required for the photolithography procedure. A composite material wing is manufactured by patterning the venation network using photoresist SU-8 on a Kapton film for the assembling of the wing. A single material artificial wing is fabricated using the photoresist SU-8 for both the membrane and the network of veins. Experiments are conducted using a modal shaker and a digital image correlation (DIC) system to determine the natural frequencies and the mode shapes of the artificial wing from the fast Fourier transform of the displacement response of the wing. The experimental results are compared with those from a finite element (FE) model of the wing. A numerical simulation of the fluid-structure interaction is conducted by coupling the FE model of the artificial wing with a computational fluid dynamics model of the surrounding airflow. From these simulations, the deformation response and the coefficients of drag and lift of the artificial wing are predicted for different freestream velocities and angles of attack. Wind-tunnel experiments are conducted using the DIC system to determine the structural deformation response of the artificial wing under different freestream velocities and angles of attack. The vibration modes are dominated by a bending and torsional deformation response. The deformation along the span of the wing increases nonlinearly from the root of the wing to the tip of the wing with Reynolds number. The aerodynamic performance, defined as the ratio of the coefficient of lift to the coefficient of drag, of the artificial wing increases with Reynolds number and angle of attack up to the critical angle of attack
