    Geotechnical and Geothermal Properties of Louisiana Coastal Sediments

    Land loss in South Louisiana is increasing at a fairly rapid rate. In an effort to reduce land loss and save the marshes of Louisiana, marsh creation projects have been proposed in carefully selected regions around the coast as part of the CPRA Coastal Master Plan 2017. Properties and characteristics of the soil obtained from soil borings were analyzed and used to determine the various design parameters that allow the marsh creation process to occur. Other properties that were taken into consideration for Louisiana coastal sediment are the geothermal properties. This research analyses those different properties obtained from geotechnical reports from CPRA and other data bases, in order to find correlations between the different soil characteristics, specifically between the soil’s compressive strength, consolidation properties, Atterberg Limits and moisture content. Furthermore, this research also studies the geothermal properties of selected Louisiana soils and the correlation between moisture content and thermal conductivity

    The Hydraulic Dimension of Reconstruction in Louisiana, 1863-1879

    Louisiana developed an extensive system of levees throughout the Atchafalaya Basin and along its territorial Mississippi River. This system reached its zenith on the eve of the American Civil War. It went into dramatic decline following the conflict due to the confluence of military activity, protracted irregular warfare, and neglect stemming from labor and capital revolution. These shifts intensified with the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation and finally consolidated after the ratification of Louisiana’s Constitution of 1879. The shift of responsibility for the construction and maintenance of levees during the Reconstruction Era led to many significant changes in the character and function of many of the State’s institutions as it struggled to adapt to the postwar order it confronted

    Incorporation of Gold Nanowires into Photovoltaic Devices

    To this day, fossil fuels still make up over 80% of the earth’s energy production. Many sources of renewable energy are available, but photovoltaics is the only source with the capacity proven to meet the increasing world energy needs. Third generation devices such as dye-sensitized and organic solar cells have gained much interest due to their cost effectiveness and flexibility but have yet to become commercially viable. Here methods have been studied to improve these devices with the use of Gold nanowire arrays. These additions provide plasmonic and light scattering enhancements in dye-sensitized solar cells. Different TiO2 deposition methods have been studied to protect the gold from the redox couple in the electrolyte. Several novel methods have been undertaken to incorporate gold nanowire arrays in organic solar cells with some success. Structural characterization shows the proposed architecture is achieved, but working devices met suffered from low success rate

    This finding aid of interviews is drawn from the Arnold R. Hirsch Collection at the Amistad Research Center. Between 1987 and 1994, historian Arnold Hirsch interviewed New Orleans’ first black mayor, Ernest Morial, and others related to that crucial era in New Orleans political history. This collection consists of 37 audiocassettes tapes that contain oral history interviews conducted by Arnold Hirsch with various New Orleanians who were active in city government and political activism. This project-based thesis covers the research and construction of the finding aid completed for this collection during an internship at the Amistad Research Center, as well as the metadata collected and created for the collection. This collection and finding aid are being housed at the Amistad Research Center

    State Ownership, Financial Constraints, and the Determinants of Capital Structure

    The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of state ownership in Saudi firms listed in the stock market. The first chapter studies the influence of state ownership on financial constraint on investment. Some scholars believe state ownership has a negative effect on the firm value. However, by using two measures of financial constraint, the investment cash flow sensitivity and the Kaplan and Zingales financial constraints index, the finding indicates that the existent of government ownership decreases financial constraint in firms. Also, the results show that the higher government ownership percentage the less financial constraint in firms. The second chapter studies the influence of specific company factors and the government ownership factor on capital structure. The finding shows that tangibility of assets and size have a positive association with leverage. Leverage is negatively correlated with growth and profitably. Finally, the results suggest that government ownership affects the level of leverage negatively

    Development of Experimental and Finite Element Models to Show Size Effects in the Forming of Thin Sheet Metals

    Abstract An experimental method was developed that demonstrated the size effects in forming thin sheet metals, and a finite element model was developed to predict the effects demonstrated by the experiment. A universal testing machine (UTM) was used to form aluminum and copper of varying thicknesses (less than 1mm) into a hemispherical dome. A stereolithography additive manufacturing technology was used to fabricate the punch and die from a UV curing resin. There was agreement between the experimental and numerical models. The results showed that geometric size effects were significant for both materials, and these effects increased as the thickness of the sheets decreased. The demonstration presents an inexpensive method of testing small-scale size effects in forming processes, which can be altered easily to produce different shapes and clearances

    Gaussian Conditionally Markov Sequences: Theory with Application

    Markov processes have been widely studied and used for modeling problems. A Markov process has two main components (i.e., an evolution law and an initial distribution). Markov processes are not suitable for modeling some problems, for example, the problem of predicting a trajectory with a known destination. Such a problem has three main components: an origin, an evolution law, and a destination. The conditionally Markov (CM) process is a powerful mathematical tool for generalizing the Markov process. One class of CM processes, called CMLCM_L, fits the above components of trajectories with a destination. The CM process combines the Markov property and conditioning. The CM process has various classes that are more general and powerful than the Markov process, are useful for modeling various problems, and possess many Markov-like attractive properties. Reciprocal processes were introduced in connection to a problem in quantum mechanics and have been studied for years. But the existing viewpoint for studying reciprocal processes is not revealing and may lead to complicated results which are not necessarily easy to apply. We define and study various classes of Gaussian CM sequences, obtain their models and characterizations, study their relationships, demonstrate their applications, and provide general guidelines for applying Gaussian CM sequences. We develop various results about Gaussian CM sequences to provide a foundation and tools for general application of Gaussian CM sequences including trajectory modeling and prediction. We initiate the CM viewpoint to study reciprocal processes, demonstrate its significance, obtain simple and easy to apply results for Gaussian reciprocal sequences, and recommend studying reciprocal processes from the CM viewpoint. For example, we present a relationship between CM and reciprocal processes that provides a foundation for studying reciprocal processes from the CM viewpoint. Then, we obtain a model for nonsingular Gaussian reciprocal sequences with white dynamic noise, which is easy to apply. Also, this model is extended to the case of singular sequences and its application is demonstrated. A model for singular sequences has not been possible for years based on the existing viewpoint for studying reciprocal processes. This demonstrates the significance of studying reciprocal processes from the CM viewpoint

    NDBC Ocean Wave Observation System Update

    The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) is modifying its ocean wave observation system due to parts obsolescence. The modified system is named Ocean Wave Linux (OWL). OWL will replace the NDBC’s older and now obsolete Digital Directional Wave Module (DDWM). Once OWL completes operational verification, the DDWM will be phased out of the NDBC’s operational weather buoy network

    The Role of Individual Difference in Predicting Psychopathology Following Peer Victimization

    eer victimization is a common experience that is associated with later psychopathology. However, there is inconsistency in the strength and statistical significance of this effect. The current study used two methods to try to understand this inconsistency. First, co-occurring internalizing and externalizing symptoms were considered dimensionally. Second, the present study considered temperament as a potential moderator to explain the multifinality of outcomes that occur following peer victimization. A community sample (N = 387; 52% female) of early adolescents (11-15) from a longitudinal study of risk and resilience factors for psychopathology was utilized to test hypotheses. Cross-lagged examinations between victimization and psychopathology were examined, including the moderating effect of temperament. No longitudinal relationship between victimization and psychopathology was found. A significant interaction between victimization and effortful control predicted externalizing and co-occurring symptoms. Future researchers should consider improving the measurement of victimization and temperament to get a better understanding of the effect

    Poet and professor Sterling A. Brown (1901-1989) played a significant role in the birth of black literary and cultural studies through his literary and academic careers. Brown helped to establish a new wave of black cultural and folklore studies during his time as the “Director of Negro Affairs” for the Federal Writers’ Project. As a professor at Howard University, Brown influenced black literary studies through his literary criticisms and seminars and his role as a mentor to literary figures of the next generations. Through letters to and from Sterling Brown and manuscripts, this thesis argues that Brown’s poetry, publications and folk studies in the nineteen twenties and thirties where the groundwork for his most prolific role of teacher-mentor
