Directional Spectrum Measurements by the Spotter: a new Developed Wave Buoy
The Spotter is an accurate, low-cost, easily deployable and robust solar powered wave buoy recently developed by Sofar Technologies (formerly Spoondrift). Spotter reduces costs and complexity of surface wave and current measurements, which can be useful for academic, military, and commercial research into surface wave and wave-driven dynamics. We performed a series of validation tests and research experiments with the Spoondrift Spotter. The low-cost and compact Spotter makes it easy to deploy arrays of wave buoys which was previously not feasible (or cost prohibitive) with traditional wave buoys. A well-designed array can provide a direct measurement of the directional wave spectrum, which is not available from a single buoy measurement. To explore this possibility, we performed a series of experiments, where multiple Spotters were deployed in a variety of configurations. The array allowed for the application of plane-wave beamforming techniques to compute wave directional spectra, which were found to compare well with those obtained by conventional methods
Killing Silence: A Path to Increasing Homicide Solvability in Urban Communities
Relatively low rates of homicide solvability results in law-abiding citizens being forced to co-exist with known murderers, which is detrimental to a community’s psyche. This condition happens disproportionately in neighborhoods where crime is high, cohesiveness among its members is weak, and the citizen/police relationship is little or non-existent. This research sought to understand this phenomenon by asking,” How can murder solvability rates improve in marginalized communities?” and employing four theoretical lenses. Using the city of New Orleans as a case study and holding Social Disorganization Theory constant, Spiral of Silence, Habitus, and Dramaturgy were utilized in an attempt to understand individuals who witness violent crime but do not come forward. From these theories, nine assumptions were formed, connecting the literature to this specific area of inquiry. Using a mixed methods approach both qualitative and quantitative data was collected within New Orleans from a variety of instruments: a survey (both web-based and in-person), a questionnaire and two deliberative forums. Utilizing the questionnaire and in conjunction with the Kettering Foundation and the National Issues Forum Institute (NIFI), this research was also able to quantitatively compare New Orleans data with data collected nationally by NIFI. While the data collected support all nine assumptions, five of the nine account for 82% of the data. Of these five, none originated from the Spiral of Silence theory, two originated from the Habitus theory, and three originated from the Dramaturgy theory
La Fièvre Jaune: An Exhibition Plan on St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Irish Immigrants, and the Role of the Catholic Church During the 1853 Yellow Fever Epidemic in New Orleans
The proposed public history project, La Fièvre Jaune, will be one component of a larger exhibit sponsored by the Archdiocese of New Orleans, Office of Archives and Records entitled Song of Farewell: Catholic Cemeteries of New Orleans, focusing on New Orleans’s historic Catholic cemeteries, funeral chapels, relics, and burial rights. Using cemetery and death records, La Fièvre Jaune documents many of the Catholic, largely Irish immigrants struck by yellow fever in 1853 and the role of St. Patrick’s cemetery as the burial site for this population. The epidemic took the lives of some 8,000 people. This project will provide insight into the ways that the Catholic Church in New Orleans responded to the 1853 yellow fever epidemic using photographs, official correspondence, as well as cemetery and death records. The entire exhibit will be housed at the Old Ursuline Convent Museum in the French Quarter
Mathematical Literacy and the Secondary Student
Public education is a continually evolving field, with new research, policies, and practices explored by professionals who are driven to provide America’s youth with high-quality education. The years since 2000 have been ripe with literature regarding the importance of content-area reading, and more recently, disciplinary literacy in adolescent classrooms. Students who are literate in a particular discipline, such as math, view themselves as fluent in the language of mathematics, comfortable with reading, discussing, and practicing complex mathematical concepts while using appropriate vocabulary (Buehl 2017). As seasoned professionals and novice educators consider the role of disciplinary literacy in their own classrooms, it is necessary to ponder the practices that are implemented within classrooms. Do they align with current research on the matter? What role do motivation and culture play in the process of becoming mathematically literate? How does adolescent development influence classroom literacy practices? These are the central questions that have guided the construction of this research study, which will seek to examine the phenomena that occur within a classroom as teachers implement practices which promote and teach mathematical literacy. The exploratory nature of this study dictates that no judgement on the effectiveness of observed and discussed instructional strategies is considered, rather, a comparison of the latter with those strategies recommended by current educational researchers and literature. Interviews and classroom observations will work in tandem with a review of the current publications that address the areas of motivation, mathematical literacy, and culture in the context of adolescent development
Restaurantville\u27s Asian Fusion
The type of establishment that we are proposing is an Asian Fusion restaurant in a major metropolitan city. This restaurant will have a casual atmosphere. It is a friendly family environment where there is no pressure to dress a certain way. Although it is mainly a quick stop restaurant there is the option sit down at the restaurant. Menu items will include a mix of different Asian cultures and American culture foods. This includes the fusion of Vietnamese, Korean, Taiwanese, Japanese and American Food. Some items are cross-cultured items whereas other menu options are from individual cultures. We are looking at being a primarily To-Go restaurant. With the help of our menu’s quick-bite items, customers can easily take their orders on the go. Our restaurant is not a restaurant where our customers wait to be seated. Our layout will be set up to where guests can come in order at the register and either sit down and eat or take their food to-go with them. Most customers, in theory, would typically order at the register, sit at a table while waiting for their food and leave once their meals are ready. With the majority of our items being appetizer-esque foods it makes it really easy to travel on the go. With some of our menu items being soup and broth based, we will have some tables available for food items that aren’t as travel friendly

La Sagrada Familia is a short film that looks at the complex interactions between three women. A grandmother, a mother, and a daughter must spend the night together in the countryside as they prepare for a wedding. Their already strained relationships will be put to the test as painful memories and unresolved grudges arise to haunt them. The story’s title is inspired by the Sacred Family Basilica in Spain. The monument is a beautiful catholic monument that has remained unfinished for hundreds of years much like the neglected relationships of an otherwise loving family
Identification of RNA Binding Proteins and RNA Binding Residues Using Effective Machine Learning Techniques
Identification and annotation of RNA Binding Proteins (RBPs) and RNA Binding residues from sequence information alone is one of the most challenging problems in computational biology. RBPs play crucial roles in several fundamental biological functions including transcriptional regulation of RNAs and RNA metabolism splicing. Existing experimental techniques are time-consuming and costly. Thus, efficient computational identification of RBPs directly from the sequence can be useful to annotate RBP and assist the experimental design. Here, we introduce AIRBP, a computational sequence-based method, which utilizes features extracted from evolutionary information, physiochemical properties, and disordered properties to train a machine learning method designed using stacking, an advanced machine learning technique, for effective prediction of RBPs. Furthermore, it makes use of efficient machine learning algorithms like Support Vector Machine, Logistic Regression, K-Nearest Neighbor and XGBoost (Extreme Gradient Boosting Algorithm). In this research work, we also propose another predictor for efficient annotation of RBP residues. This RBP residue predictor also uses stacking and evolutionary algorithms for efficient annotation of RBPs and RNA Binding residue. The RNA-binding residue predictor also utilizes various evolutionary, physicochemical and disordered properties to train a robust model. This thesis presents a possible solution to the RBP and RNA binding residue prediction problem through two independent predictors, both of which outperform existing state-of-the-art approaches
Measuring Interactive Narrative Quality with Experience Management as Story Graph Pruning
An interactive narrative in a virtual environment is created through player and system interaction, often through an experience manager controlling the actions of all non-player characters (NPCs). Thus, the narrative (and its quality) is entirely dependent on a conflicting combination of unpredictability from the player and a controlled environment that must react to this unpredictability. Ideally, the experience manager should decide NPC actions in a way that never limits player freedom and shows the NPCs acting in believable manners to create a story that can be meaningfully affected by the player and feels organic. One solution to this is to view experience management as a story graph pruning problem. Nodes in the graph represent all the states that the virtual environment could possibly represent. These nodes are then connected by edges, which represent the actions that change one state to another. This graph is then intelligently pruned until NPCs have believable, unambiguous actions to take in every state, while never pruning player actions, with the intention of offering a more meaningful narrative
