Surgical management of retroperitoneal hydatid cysts - results on a group of six patients

    Get PDF
Objectives. Hydatid disease is a potentially lethal parasitic condition caused by the larvae of Echinococcus Granulosus; it is found in humans and more commonly in domestic and wild animals in endemic areas. This pathology is frequently encountered in the liver, the hydatid cyst with retroperitoneal location representing a rarely encountered form of evolution. Materials and Methods. In the present paper, we present a study carried out on 6 patients hospitalized in the Surgery Department of the Craiova County Emergency Clinical Hospital. These patients were diagnosed between 2002-2022 with retroperitoneal hydatid cyst or with multiple cysts (including retroperitoneal), being operated and monitored postoperatively at a distance. Results. The diagnosis was generally established by clinical examination, laboratory investigations and CT imaging, while the MRI evaluation was performed only in two of the cases, in order to provide additional data necessary for the surgeon. Conclusions. The difficulty of surgical interventions was determined by the size and local/multilocular extension of the disease; in the case of one patient, a double approach, abdominal and thigh, was necessary

Ovarian cancer prevention and screening – where do we stand today?

    Get PDF
Widely recognized as the most deathful gynecologic malignancy affecting women worldwide, ovarian cancer has reported a significant decline in terms of prevalence and incidence in the last decades. This fact has been especially explained by to the use of menopausal hormonal therapy and of oral contraceptives in association with genetic, oncologic and gynecologic counseling. The aim of the current review is to discuss about actual ovarian cancer prevention and screening tools. For this reason, we reviewed several data related to ovarian cancer, such as: incidence and risk factors, histopathological types (epithelial with high- and low-grade serous carcinomas, clear cell carcinoma, mucinous carcinoma, germ cells ovarian cancer tumors), as well as screening, diagnosis and prevention methods (ovulation disruption, surgical prevention, etc.). Although progress has been reported in the last decades in terms of early diagnosis and treatment of ovarian cancer, this malignancy still represents a significant health problem affecting women worldwide. However, it seems that the golden key for optimizing the long-term outcomes in such patients is represented by a better understanding of the complex pathogenesis of this disease

Flies associated with floral canopies of the new oilseed crop, pennycress, in the Midwestern U.S.A.

    Get PDF
Flies are frequent visitors to flowers of many species of plants within the mustard family (Brassicaceae). They derive nutrition from these flowers, and some fly species are pollinators. Field pennycress (Thlaspi arvense) is a mustard species that is being developed as a new “cash cover crop,” i.e., an autumn-sown cover crop whose oil-rich seeds can be harvested profitably in spring. Although pennycress is largely wind- and self-pollinated, its flowers also attract insect visitors. However, the extent of visitation to pennycress flowers by flies remains largely unknown, especially the identities of those flies. Thus, we examined flies associated with pennycress flowering canopies at five site-years in Illinois and Minnesota. The number of fly species averaged 16 per site-year. Hover flies (Syrphidae) were common visitors to pennycress flowering canopies, representing 24% of all Diptera collected. Toxomerus marginatus (margined calligrapher), whose larvae are aphid predators, was especially abundant within this family. However, the most common flies detected were Delia spp. (Anthomyiidae, root maggot flies), which averaged 51% of all flies collected. Adults of these flies are known pollinators, but their larvae also are pests that can damage seedlings of common summer crops. Although seedling damage to plants that are double- or relay-cropped (i.e., inter-seeded in spring) with pennycress has not been observed yet, close observation of this insect group and its effects may be needed if pennycress is widely sown in the future as a cash cover crop

Observations on the Oak Twig Pruner, Anelaphus villosus (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), in Michigan: Size of Twigs Pruned, Insect Survival, and Seasonality of Twig Drop

The oak twig pruner [OTP; Anelaphus villosus (Fabricius)] is likely a species complex, with A. parallelus (Newman) recently recognized as a synonym. The parallelus form of A. villosus is considered the subject of this paper. In Michigan, OTP has a 2-year life cycle, with twigs pruned primarily in even-numbered years and adults emerging from the fallen twigs in odd-numbered years. During 1990 to 2011, I studied various aspects of OTP life history in southern Michigan (Ingham County). Based on measurements from over 300 infested oak twigs, they averaged 43.1 cm long, 9.4 mm in diameter at the pruned end, weighed 22.9 g (dry weight of woody material), and had 57 leaves. OTP adults emerged in 1991 from 15.9% of 290 pruned twigs that had fallen in 1990 and were left on the forest floor until December 1990 and then placed in individual sleeve cages and later reared indoors in early 1991. Likely parasitoids of OTP emerged from 15.5% of these same 290 twigs. No linear relationship was found between the dry weight of OTP adults and the size or weight of the twigs in which they developed. During inspections along the same 1-km-long forest path from 1994 to 2011, recently-fallen pruned twigs were only found in even-numbered years, usually starting in late May to early June, peaking between late June to mid-July, and ending between August to December. The annual number of pruned twigs found along this same 1-km section of trail, varied from a low of 24 twigs in 2004 to a high of 168 in 2006. For all years combined, 89% of the recently fallen infested twigs collected on the ground in June had green foliage, compared with 52% of the twigs collected in July, 7.3% in August, and 2.6% in September

    Sauron: Weirdly Sexy

    Get PDF
A popular meme depict Galadriel and Frodo admitting that Sauron is weirdly sexy, a humorous allusion to The Rings of Power’s Halbrand. The show\u27s controversial revelation of Halbrand as Sauron highlights the differences between Tolkien’s construction of Second and Third Age Sauron as an attractive or admirable leader compared to Peter Jackson’s portrayal of him as a monster or disembodied fiery eyeball. This, in turn, has implications for the geopolitical order of Middle-earth in which many people legitimately might wish to be on Sauron’s side. Acknowledging Sauron\u27s sexiness may allow us to see Tolkien\u27s world system in a new light

Updating data on cognitive impairment in stroke patients

    Get PDF
Vascular cognitive impairments are the expression of complex interactions between vascular etiology, risk factors (brain diseases, white matter lesions, etc.) and cellular changes at the brain level. Consequently, vascular cognitive impairment is highly dependent on the location, extent (volume of brain tissue affected) and number of lesions. Memory impairment is not necessarily characteristic of vascular cognitive decline, usually having an evolution with episodic exacerbations and multiple cerebrovascular attacks (cumulative effect), thus producing a gradual deterioration. In recent years, the concept of mild cognitive impairment has emerged as a potential form of predementia, but which can progress to different types of dementia, including Alzheimer\u27s disease or vascular dementia. This review presents recent data related to the etiological and risk factors of cognitive decline after stroke, the associated neuropsychological and behavioral changes, the clinical forms/diagnosis and general principles of vascular dementia therapy. As preliminary conclusions, the Hachinski score is a very useful tool in differentiating vascular dementia from Alzheimer\u27s dementia. A score greater than 7 points (especially when associated with imaging and anamnestic criteria) suggests a vascular etiology of dementia, whereas a score of 4 points or less excludes such an etiology. Although it is not the only factor involved, vascular etiology is still intensively studied because it is the only one that can be prevented and treated

Predicting Professional Golf Success Using Amateur Rankings

    Get PDF
One important question in sports is whether it is possible to predict a player’s professional performance based on their collegiate or amateur success. This question has relevance for coaches, fans, and the players themselves. Many studies have examined the relationship between amateur and professional performance in sports such as football and basketball, but no such studies have been conducted in golf. In this study, we combine data from three prominent amateur, collegiate, and professional golf ranking websites in order to predict golfers’ professional success based on their performance as an amateur and collegiate player. The data for the analysis was collected using web scraping, including the Selenium package in Python. Once the data was collected, regression analysis was used to predict players’ professional rankings at various time increments after turning professional based on their amateur and collegiate rankings. Additionally, logistic regression was used to predict whether or not a player reaches certain ranking milestones. The results of this study will be valuable for golf fans and aspiring professionals, as well as the academic community. Many golfers are curious about their chances of success if they were to turn professional, and fans are interested in this as well. Additionally, this analysis adds onto existing literature that compares professional and amateur success by exploring a sport that has not been examined before

The Double Life of Franz Schubert: Der Doppelgänger and Homosexual Identity in 19th Century Vienna

    No full text
The poet Heinrich Heine and the composer Franz Schubert had faced persecution in their social and cultural contexts for aspects of their identity. Heine grew up during the Napoleonic Wars in Germany, a very turbulent time and environment for Jewish people. This led to conflicting feelings about his own faith, providing the inspiration to write the poem Der Doppelgänger. Heine wrote this poem which incorporated many Jewish undertones, because it was purposely written from a Jewish perspective. Later on, Schubert would use Heine’s Der Doppelgänger as part of his song cycle titled Schwanengesang. Schubert utilizes unique musical elements to illustrate Heine’s themes, such as the consistent use of the note F# and a double articulation. Notable musicologists David Bretherton and David Løberg Code are key figures in analyzing the connections built through these musical elements. Though Schubert composed compositions including Hebrew and texts from the Jewish tradition, there is speculation that he did not compose Der Doppelgänger with Heine’s original intentions in mind. Schubert manifested his own life in two different avenues by being a successful composer and a homosexual, which was highly frowned upon in Vienna in the 19th century. This paper will utilize a musical, literary, and historical framework to analyze the events in Schubert and Heine’s life, as well as conditions of life in Germany and Vienna during their lifetimes, to evaluate what meanings each artist intended in their individual settings of Der Doppelgänger
