The Impact of Religiosity and Violence Prevention Programs on Violence amongst Adolescents in the U.S.
Youth violence is a societal concern in the United States due to its negative consequences on individuals and communities. The current study aimed to examine the potential mitigating factors of violence prevention programs and religiosity in reducing youth violence among African American, White, Hispanic, and Asian American adolescents in the United States. It also tested the moderation effects of sex on religiosity and violence prevention programs with youth violence. Results of the main effects revealed that adolescents who attended violence prevention programs were generally less likely to engage in violence than those who did not; and that adolescents who were more religious were also less likely to engage in future aggression. Sex had a moderating effect on the relationship between religiosity and youth violence in the sample, however, there was no significant prediction of the interaction of violence prevention programs with sex to youth violence among the study participants. Recommendations for families, communities, and schools are discussed.
Key words: Youth violence, violence prevention programs, religiosity, and adolescents
Consumption of Insect Pests by the Evening Bat (Nycticeius humeralis) in Southeastern Michigan
Diet of a colony of evening bats (Nycticeius humeralis Rafinesque) in Lenawee County, Michigan, was studied during 2006–2007, using standard fecal analysis. Of the 594 fecal pellets examined, the spotted cucumber beetle (Diabrotica undecimpunctata howardi Barber: Coleoptera), green stink bug (Chinavia hilaris Say: Hemiptera), and emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire: Coleoptera) were identified and occurred at a frequency of 15, 12, and 0.8%; respectively, over the two years combined. In some weeks, up to 64% of the pellets analyzed contained fragments of spotted cucumber beetles, and up to 43% contained green stink bugs—two of the most injurious pests to corn and soybean. Consumption of spotted cucumber beetle and green stink bug appeared to coincide with the life history of these species. Conservation and management of suitable bat habitat adjacent to agricultural lands would likely benefit farmers and bats alike
Moths of the Douglas Lake Region (Emmet and Cheboygan Counties), Michigan: VII. Tortricidae (Lepidoptera)
Two hundred thiry-four species of Tortricidae are documented from Emmet and Cheboygan counties in Michigan, including 32 state records. This is the second major taxon of microlepidoptera inventoried from the area, and provides the first significant listing of a regional tortricid fauna from the state. Several additions are expected for this list as additional habitats and seasons are sampled more effectively
Mourning and Melancholia in The Lord of the Rings
This paper analyzes how Denethor and Théoden respond differently to the deaths of their sons in J.R.R. Tolkien\u27s The Lord of the Rings. Initially consumed by grief, Théoden embraces hope with Gandalf\u27s support, while Denethor descends into despair. Employing Freud\u27s essay Mourning and Melancholia (1917), we examine how Théoden and Denethor illustrate differing reactions to mourning and melancholy in the face of loss. Recognizing developments in psychoanalytic theory, the paper moves beyond simple binaries to offer a nuanced exploration of grief and attachment in Tolkien\u27s narrative
A Multi-Modal Intervention to Improve Identification, Management, and Prevention of Early Childhood Caries in the Primary Care Setting
Early childhood caries (ECC) is the most prevalent chronic childhood disease and, if untreated, can lead to significant long-term health and social consequences, posing a substantial healthcare burden (AAPD, 2023; ADA, 2023; USPSTF, 2021; WHO, 2022). This evidence-based practice (EBP) project aimed to implement a multi-modal intervention to reduce ECC risk factors, prevent new dental caries, and halt the progression of existing dental caries. Conducted in a pediatric primary care setting in West Michigan, the project included patients five and under who received an oral examination and dental caries risk assessment following the AAP’s guidelines. Based on their oral health evaluation, providers determined each patient’s caries risk and developed an action plan, which included fluoride varnish application, risk reduction education with anticipatory guidance, and referral to a dental home. Thirteen participants received a repeat oral health screening at their next office visit and 13 participants received a follow-up phone call to identify new or worsening caries and changes in their risk factors. McNemar’s tests were used to analyze changes in caries and risk factors from baseline to the 12-week follow-up. Of the 26 participants who received a follow-up assessment, 25 (96.2%) showed no evidence of new or worsening caries, and 24 (92.3%) had a reduction in caries risk factors. The overall reduction in caries risk from baseline to the 12-week follow-up was statistically significant (p = .039). Findings from this project suggest that a multi-modal approach, including fluoride varnish application and individualized education, may help clinicians identify high-risk patients and implement preventative strategies to reduce ECC incidence and progression. Clinicians should ensure that education and anticipatory guidance are tailored to each patient’s specific risk factors to optimize outcomes
A Checklist of Illinois Centipedes (Chilopoda)
Records for 45 centipede species occurring in Illinois are given with a brief discussion of general habitat features and the effects of certain environmental factors on specific distribution patterns. The chilopod fauna of Illinois includes species from southeastern, western, and northern physiographic regions and represents a richer mixture of chilopod species than is found in any adjacent state
